NWA J36 Show & Sale of In-Lamb Suffolk Females The Annual show and sale of Suffolk in-lamb ewes, shearlings and gimmer lambs had a strong line-up of sheep put before the evening’s judge, Graham Denby of Longtown. In the pre-sale show, the first prize flock ewe from TA Blair, Thornfleet Suffolks, was awarded the Champion Rosette. This Cairness Last Flight sired ewe, sold in-lamb with Twins to Forkins Shalaa later sold for 420gns to Messers Brooke of Leyburn. The Reserve Champion rosette was awarded to James & Caroline Airey with the first prize shearling. This flashy shearling, sired by Strathisla Thunderball and scanned carrying twins by Lakeview Major General, realised the evening’s top price of 450gns. Gimmer lambs sold to a top of 300gns twice, firstly from Steven Bolland of Wharfe Suffolks with his first prize gimmer lamb, followed by TA Blair with his second place gimmer lamb. Gimmer lambs averaged 242gns with all being sold. A nice crowd of active bidders and onlookers gathered ringside, resulting in a fast trade, with all buyers leaving suited with the prices achieved. In total, seven sheep sold in advance of 400gns, with buyers keen to purchase well bred, showy ewes. Ewes and shearlings sold to a respectable average of 302gns. William Alexander, Auctioneer, commented on the sale "Suffolk sheep continued to sell well at J36, buyers were present for all classes. A desire for well bred, flashy sheep ensured best pedigrees sold to a premium" An entry of 22 Pedigree Charollais from several noted local breeders sold to keen interest from an active ringside of buyers all keep to secure stock. The first vendor Robert Towers of Camp House, Farleton sold the best of his consignment at 320gns for a Charollais ewe inlamb to a Pedigree Beltex with others inlamb to a pedigree Charollais selling for 300gns. Older Charollais ewes carrying Beltex triplets sold at 250gns, this price was reached for 3crop ewes carrying Charollais twins. The next vendor was John Stott Jnr, Kendal with his annual production sale which attracted keen interest from new and returning customers. Bidding reached 300gns on 4 occasions for shearlings carrying twins with others at 280gns. The final vendor M Williams, Rhuddlan sold shearlings carrying triplets at 230gns and others with singles 200gns. The next multi breed sale of individual in-lamb sheep is Thursday 7th January 2016.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 20th November A good entry of Store Cattle forward today with plenty of well fleshed cattle in the market. A buoyant trade throughout and once again vendors leaving pleased. All sizes ages and types of cattle in strong demand today. There was plenty of well fleshed, heavy, short keep steers selling in excess of £1200, topping at £1370 from H Birkett & Son of North Farm with a Charolais and British Blue Steers from H & JA Gorst of Shaws Farm sold to the same price. Heifer sold to £1200 from JD & GM Bracken of Greenlands Farm with a British Blue. Native cattle continue to be in strong demand easily sold at Lancaster with more required every week to fulfil buyers’ requirements.

The Cast Cows and OTM Cattle sale had a bumper entry of 157 forward. Meaty cows were good to sell and better than other local markets but an oversupply of lean types were less money than the previous week. The trade was topped by H Birkett & Son of North Farm selling a Limousin cow to 187.5ppk. Better types of Black and white cows sold around 120ppk topping at 147.5ppk from Cote Farm Partnership. An overall market average 95ppk.

A show of 44 Calves this morning, mainly made up of black and whites saw a faster trade than anticipated. Black and White calves sold to a top of £180 for an 8 week old calf from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cocker House. The strongest Black and White calves broke the £100 barrier with nice rearing sorts regularly £65-£85. Montbelliardes to £222 at 4 weeks old from JR Pye, Hatters Farm. Beef calves sold well with demand for all ages and breeds. A run of young Charolais calves sold to a top of £380 and £310 at only 16days old for bulls from JR Newsham & Son, Galgate. A run of stirks to finish the sale topped at £490 for a 7 month Limousin Bull from TR Denby with a 2month heifer from the same home realising £435. The best trade in the stirk section came from R Gregory of Cabus with 4-5m Black and White bulls realising £290. Vendors are reminded to have calves forward in good time to allow for a 10:15am start.

Monday 23rd November A lot sharper trade for Prime Lambs at Lancaster today with an overall average of 158ppk for a smaller entry of 721. Heavy weight lambs sold to £78 from J Bargh & Son of North Farm. Better bred Continental types of lambs sold around 170ppk. Generally, pens of lambs 43kg – 48kg selling in the region of £25 to £28 above their weights. Mule lambs in strong demand today topping at £73.50 for 45kg lambs from WI & A Atkinson & Son of Holme House who sold Mashams to £73 all mules forward today averaged £70.86. Horned lambs sold to £64.50 from BD Gill of Yarlsber with a pen of 40kg Dalesbreds.

A smaller show of Cast Ewes this morning, with only 55 forward. Trade for all classes of sheep was strong, topping at £78 for a pen of 5 Texel ewes from JM & MH France, Littledale. Mules sold to a top of £68 from WJ & LA Barker, Arkholme with others to £64, to average £62/head. Hill sheep reached a top of £76 for big Cheviot ewes from P Prickett, Hutton Roof Hall and Swales to £54 from RF Towers, Wray. Overall average of £57.35 for all cast sheep forward. More ewes needed to fulfil buyers demand here at Lancaster.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 19th November Buoyant Store Lamb Trade at NWA J36 The weekly sale of Store Lambs saw a rise in trade for all classes producing a market average of £49.56. A full ringside of buyers were in attendance today and keen to purchase all classes of lambs, more could have been sold to vendors advantage and we encourage entries for the next sale on Thursday 26th November. A top price of £62 was achieved for Texel x lambs from B Dickinson & Co with Suffolks to £58.50. Best pens of shorter keep lambs regularly £55 £59.50 with medium keep lambs £51 - £54. Hill lambs sold to £44 for Rough Fells, £43.50 Herdwicks, £41.50 Cheviots and £40.50 SBF. Smaller long keep lambs saw increased demand from farmers with surplus grass. Mules and Mashams sold to £55.50 with other pens of better sorts £51 - £54. Ram lambs sold to £54.50 for best bred medium keep continentals with others £45 - £52. Hill lambs sold to £45 for best bunches with lesser and poorer bred lambs £22 - £30.

A very small, disappointing entry of Calves forward this morning but the trade was strong with all calves easily selling to their value. The calf entry was mainly made up of black and whites, the eldest being a month old selling for £98 from HJ Robinson & Son of Elm Tree. Better grown young rearers £50 plus. Only a small amount of beef calves forward saw British Blue bulls sell to £320 from the Sowerby Family of Appleby. A selection of British Blue heifer stirks forward sold to £520 from JR Armistead of Sedbergh.

The sale commenced with light lambs ranging from 29kg – 35kg and selling to keen interest with numbers falling short of buyers requirements. First cross lambs sold to £58.50 for Texel x and others achieving £56. Hill lambs sold to £51.50 for Dalesbred and Swales £40. We have buyers looking for light lambs and more can be sold each week to vendors advantage. Prime lambs sold to an overall market average of 155p/kg with well finished pure and first cross lambs 165p/kg – 175p/kg topping at 192p/kg for Beltex x lambs from J Hartley & Son. Mules sold to 161p/kg (av 148p/kg) with hill lambs selling to 162p/kg for Cheviots and 148p/kg for Swaledales. Buyers are showing caution to dirty lambs, we urge vendors to forward lambs as clean as possible. A top price of £79 was achieved on 2 occasions from S Hill and J Hartley & Son, heavy lambs regularly £72 - £75 dependant on breed. Mules sold to £75 from F & SA Edmondson (all sold to av. £68). Hill lambs sold to £63.50 for a pen of Swaledales and £57 Rough Fells. A mixed entry of Cast Sheep forward at J36 today, with many hill bred ewes in the market sold to an overall market average of £51, which was in-line with other local centres. Continental ewes sold to a top of £91 for a pen of Texel ewes from Mark Dodgson of Spital Farm, with better types of ewes in the eighties. The day’s trade was topped by R S & B A Harker of Overthwaite Farm with three Leicester tups selling to £99. Horned ewes were good to sell all day and eagerly bid for. Better Swaledale ewes in the fifties with all Swaledale ewes forward averaging £43.
