Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep. Monday 20th July 2026.
PRIME LAMBS
Lancasters weekly sale of prime lambs saw a pleasing entry of 675 lambs averaging 384ppk. No fancy saying or fire emojis needed- just look at the prices to see the trade. 50 lambs over the £200 barrier, topping at £224 for Texels from S Bosworth, Burnley. Other heavy weight Texels to £222 from S Ayrton, Thurnham with D & K Swarbrick with their usually run of quantity lambs to £218 also for Texels. Handy weighted butcher types seeing plenty of trade with M Coxhead, Preston selling 41kg Beltex to 507ppk or £208. M Clegg, Stalmine also making £208 or 495ppk this time for 42kg Beltex. Plenty of these types of lambs round the 460-490ppk mark with buyers able to cope with any amount of this type of lambs. Well finished 43-45kg commercial type lambs selling well round the 375ppk mark.

Cast sheep saw a similar trade on the week with a leaner show on o er seeing a decent average of £145.

Bigger Numbers Descend on J36 with Trade Capable of Catering for All
TA Teasdale, Grange over Sands led the day’s trading with his heavy Texels selling to £234. E Dodgson, Kendal sold Beltex cross to £217, Su olks sold to £216 from AJ & SE Burrow, Milnthorpe and Dutch Spotted sold to £214 from DA Dixon, Grayrigg. Numerous pens of heavy lambs were over £4/kilo with 434pp/kg being the top call today for marvellous Texels from E Dodgson, Kendal with Su olks at 428pp/kg from WS Burrow Ltd, Carnforth. Lightweight, smart types sold to 419pp/kg (£176) for 42kg from DJ Clarke Farming, Lancaster. An overall average of 376pp/kg was achieved.

CAST SHEEP
Trade for cast sheep remained strong today despite a larger influx of cast sheep going through the markets at the moment. Numbers were up as expected and trade for the middle packet of ewes perhaps saw an increase on the week.
Top price for ewes was achieved from J&D Dixon, Grayrigg at £202 for a pen of Dutch Spotted ewes. Cast rams were topped out at £190 for a Cheviot from J Angus, Holmrook.
Goats present today averaged £150.

CALVES- 82 Head
Calf trade remained buoyant despite some regulars absent. Blue Bull calves were the most sought after category with an average of £782 and topping out at £1000 from JW&TE Sharpe, Flodder Hall. The same firm had two more at £960.
Limousins to £810 from Langley Park, 8 week old Blondes to £740 from R Heath, Millom & nicely reared Angus to £680 from Messrs Dennison, Ulverston. Month old calves a good trade, selling to £660 for BB from RW&SA Nicholson, Lupton & HJ Robinson, Elm Tree with Limousin to £650 from J&O Galbraith, Endmoor. B&W Bulls well sold reaching £390 from SW&K Metcalfe.
Heifer calves followed the same script, with Blues from JW&TE Sharp topping at £760. RW&JA Nicholson, Lupton sold nice 30 day old BB Heifers to £720 twice with HJ Robinson, Elm Tree acheiving the same. All heifer calves acheiving maximum value with Longhorns to £700, Limousin £680 & AA £630.

A quality show today with a smart run or two from returning customers. Topping todays trade was a classy pair of Angus heifers from AM Smith Ltd making £1440. Blonde cattle were good to sell with a good example from SJ&NS Wood, Windermere making £1420. Hereford heifers were in demand with plenty over the £1400 mark and an overall average of £1360. Heifers a similar story, topping at £1990 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Fawcett, Burton. Calves a flyer at Lancaster, 25 days old Charolais bulls lead the way at £780 from GJ&G Billington, Garstang with three week olds from this good home at £770. A real nice show of young rearing bull calves forward today, saw Herefords from WN&D Smith, Cockerham reach £680 and £670 x3, all at 5 weeks old. Aberdeen Angus sold to £660 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe and smart month old British Blue bulls to £640 from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth. The very youngest saw Bamber Farms sell British Blue bulls to £520 and £510 at two weeks old.
Heifer calves a fierce trade, selling to £780 and £740 for British Blues from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale with month old types to £680 from GH Sanderson and £670 from Barber Farms. Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to £600 from J Bargh & Son with Hereford to £550 from WN&D Smith.
Stirks followed, selling to £1390 for a pen of three Aberdeen Angus bullocks from S Rossall, Over Wyresdale with JR Newsham selling Herefords to £1010 and £970, and Black and Whites to £710.

Lancaster weekly store cattle saw 140 through the main ring with trade very similar on the week. Steers averaging £2085 and heifers to £1898.
Steers topped at £2480 for a single British Blue from D & N Davies, Garstang with a trio of Aberdeen Angus steers not far behind at £2350 from CR Veevers, Leyland. Limousin steers to £2220 from MJ Waller, Carnforth who also had Charolais steers to £2200. Dairy bred steers to £2250 for Swedish Reds while two pens of proper Friesian steers from regular vendor EE Thornton & Sons to £1880 and £1820. Store heifers saw plenty of interest with JD & GM Bracken, Garstang selling his pair of British Blue heifers to £2280
with another pair from WT Eastham & Sons, Goosnargh to £2200. J & M Cockett, Ingleton with Aberdeen Angus to £2200 plenty of other Aberdeen Angus heifers round the £2000 mark. Charolais heifers to £2180 from MJ Waller, Carnforth and Limousin heifers to £2050 from WR Clarke, Out Rawcli e.
