NWA J36 Suffolk & Multi-breed In-lamb Sale Thursday 17th November The annual show and sale of in lamb Suffolk sheep was held on Thursday 17th November. The sale continues to grow from year to year with an increase in entries each year with over 100 entered for this year’s sale. The pre-sale show was expertly judged by Mr Andrew Bailey of Masham. The overall champion Suffolk was awarded to MA & KD Tett, Raikes Farm, Preston with lot 35 and the reserve champion rosette was awarded to J & C Airey, Reeds Garden, Urswick, Ulverston, with lot 68. An introduction to this year’s sale was a show class from in lamb Charolais ewes and gimmer shearling with the first prize being awarded to JD & V Towers & Son of Camp House with lot 11. A strong trade was enjoyed throughout the sale with a busy ringside of buyers from throughout the North West and further a field looking to purchase sheep. The trade topped at 520gns from James and Caroline Airey of Little Urswick, Ulverston with their pen of sheep creating a lot interest especially following a successful summer showing at many local shows with others from the same good home selling to 500gns and 420gns twice. JA & M Gornall & Son of Laneside Farm had on offer some very well bred sheep and there consignment of Suffolk ewes and shearlings sold to a top of 44gns. The in lamb Charollais ewes sold to a top of 580gns from JD & V Towers & Son of Camp House in lamb to the Charollais with others in lamb to the Charollais selling to 500gns and Charollais ewes in lamb to the Beltex selling to a top of 350gns. The flock production sale on behalf of John Stott of Kingsland Flock sold his pedigree in Lamb Charollais ewes and shearlings in lamb to Charollais tup sold to a top of 450gns twice. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 18th November A good show of Store Cattle again this week at Lancaster with just shy of 400 forward. Stronger and short term cattle were again good to sell with a full ringside of buyers in attendance, with leaner and longer term cattle harder to sell. Topping the trade today was a Charolais steer at £1370 from DE & SM Moorhouse, High House Farm with plenty of lots breaking the £1300 mark. The Heifers topped at £1210 for a British Blue from M Shepard & Son, Pasture House Farm. With a hand full of lots over £1100. Again a large show of 145 Cast Cattle went under the hammer today at Lancaster, with the trade holding up well throughout. A large amount of lean cows forward this week but meaty cows sold to a good trade. Topping the cow trade was a Friesian cow at £973.25 from P&EM Mason, Spital Farm. Limousin cows sold to a top of 169.5ppk from AE Atkinson & Son, Stubb Farm. over thirty month old heifer sold to a top of at 189.5ppk or £1155 with an Angus from J Ward & Sons, Intack Farm, with the Steers topping at 197.5ppk or £1185 for a Limousin from J Bargh, Old Woodhouse. The weekly sale of Calves had another strong entry o6 over 60 forward once again at Lancaster. A strong trade as always at Lancaster for the good quality beef calves with the second quality and very young beef calves harder to place as seen in the store cattle ring. Once again at Lancaster calves selling in excess of the £400 mark topping at £410 from MJ Fell Ltd of Chapel House Farm with a British Blue bull calf with heifers from the same good home selling to £375. Plenty of good quality beef calves selling in excess of £300 and young calves with plenty of potential in strong demand with Simmental bull calves at 16 days old selling to £290 from Eddie and Angie Newsham of Sellerley Farm. Weaned black and whites sold to £190 from J & G Thornley of Derby Lodge Farm. A very mixed entry of young and Holstein type calves in made it hard work to sell the black and whites this week. Monday 21st November The weekly sale of Prime Lambs sold to a stronger trade than anticipated with vendors leaving well satisfied with their trade with a market average of 165ppk for an entry of over 800 prime lambs. Heavy weight Texel lambs weighing 55kg from Martin Ayrton of Bambers Farm sold to a top of £97 with 52kg Lambs from Richard Prickett of Hutton Roof selling to £94. Nicer quality Texel lambs sold to 191ppk twice from Martin Ayrton of Bambers Farm and Richard Prickett of Hutton Roof. A good number of Mule wether lambs in the market sold in the region of £28 to £30 above their weight with Mule lambs selling to a top of £76 from Fred and Mary Woodhouse of Fell End Farm. An entry of 176 Mule lambs in the market today sold to an average of £72.66. A few horned lambs saw Swaledale tup lambs from T Ayrton and Son of Yates Farm weighing 40kg sell for £62. An active ring of buyers at Lancaster who are looking to purchase lambs, with more lambs required each week to fulfil buyer’s requirements. Prime Lamb Top Prices: House

Topping the Cast Sheep trade was a pen of suffolks, consigned by J & D E Mitchell & Son, Snapewood Farm, and realised £93. Texel's peaked at £89, from E Hartley, Hazel Brae. G R & R A Surtrees, Rowallen House topped the mule trade at £75. Rams were selling to £103 for Suffolk's consigned by G R & R A Surtrees, Rowallen House. 53 Cast Ewes avg £54.28. Lancaster Sale Reports NWA Lancaster Monthly Dairy Sale The monthly show and sale of Dairy Cattle at Lancaster had a catalogued entry of just short of 50 new Calved heifers and cows including a couple of Holstein breeding bulls. The pre-sale show was expertly judged by Mr Philip Halhead of Norbreck farm, whom had two strong heifer classes out to judge with class two, the none haltered heifer class, one of the largest seen for some time. The championship rosette was awarded to lot 8 from the Inman Family of Strickland Hill of Witherslack with Witherslack Mika Julie, a very stylish heifer giving 34 litres. The reserve champion was awarded to lot 10 from Enchanted Holsteins of Elswick with Creskeld Lavanguard Honeysuckle, a much admired second calved cow giving 52 litres. There was a firm trade throughout the sale with buyers looking to purchase heifers yielding plenty of milk. The sale topped at £2,120 for the champion, Witherslack Mika Julie, with the reserve champion, Creskeld Lavanguard Honeysuckle, selling to £2,100. R Morris-Eyton and Son of Beck Side sold lot 49, Beckside Trump Bet 2, to £1,950. The consignment of heifers from the Drinkall Bros of Catshaw Farm always creates plenty of interest and sold to a top of £1,900 and £1,880 (twice). There was thirteen heifers sell in excess of £1,800 with all heifers forward selling to a market average of £1,592.63. A couple bulls in today’s sale, saw lot 71, Sandley Pacific, a bull with a depth of breeding from a line of 9 generations of VG and EX from George Sanderson and Family of Blackleach House Farm, sell to £2,150.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 17th November Store Lambs had a top price per head of £71 for a pen of Texels consigned by L M & C Whitaker, Moorland Cottage. A pen of 15 Texel X lambs consigned by M/S Wilson, Wyke Farm realised £70.50. Mule lambs hit the top spot of £69.50 from J E Read, Mealrigg, with a pen of 9 Suffolks from the same home also making £69.50. Horned lambs sold to £65 from J M Galbraith, 10 Abbey Drive. A BDM X Beltex lamb from Messrs Hodgson, High Borrans Farm, realised £59.50. Charollais lambs consigned by J Holme & Son, Hollowmire, sold to £58 and TLB & J Knowles, High Borrowbridge, sold his pen of Cheviots for £57.50. Swale lambs realised £53.50 which were consigned by R Bownass, Abbey Farm. A pen of Herdwicks topped £39 from T W & J Beatty, Long Green Head, and a pen of Rough Fells from B J Bainbridge, Stepps Farm also made £39. There was a mixed show of lambs on offer today, with some classes easier. Good, quality skinned lambs were well sought after, with texels selling from £60- £70. Long stretchy Suffolks sold away well, £55-£60. Any well fleshed mules made £60-£65. Tuesday 22nd November The weekly sale of Prime Lambs saw smaller entry forward at J36 today with just shy of 1100. A better trade was noticeable this afternoon with an overall market average of 173p/kg. Handy weight contenental lambs were selling the best with an eager ring full of buyers with a pen of Beltex x lambs weighing 44kg from AR & BJ Thompson, Poppy Farm selling for £99.50. Heavy continental and Suffolk lambs were selling well with them topping at £99 from DW & NM Alderson, High Green. More horned lambs creeping into the market now also selling well today with a top of £71 for some 45kg from TA & J Dixon, Yoad Pot. The overall top price per kilo was a pair of inside fed 40kg Beltex x lambs from PJ Onions, Keerfalls Forest Farm selling to 237.5p/kg. More lambs required for next week to fulfil buyer requirements. There was 485 Cast Sheep forward at J36 which is a slightly smaller entry than usual due to the time of year with trade topping at £98 from TA Blair of Thornfleet with a Suffolk ewe. The tup trade topped at £105 for Bluefaced Leicester from F & SA Edmondson, Netherhouses Farm. Strong continental ewes selling well into the eighties with buyers looking to purchase better types of ewes today. Meaty ewes were selling to a good trade, with mule ewes selling to £71 from KE Richards and Son of Crook of Lune. There was a strong trade today for horned sheep, best seen for some time with Swaledale ewes selling to £52 from Calderside Farm with Rough Fell ewes selling to £54 from JE Wightman, Crabtree Farm.
