PRIME HOGGS

Well finished hoggs continue to attract the keenest attention from buyers with out of spec hoggs experiencing resistance, as seen nationally.

Texel crosses from J Bargh & Son sold to £163 with others £161 for JM & MH France & Son, £160 for TR Prickett, £158 for KA Purtill. Standards to £153 from KA Purtill and lightweights to £139 from T & E Burrow. Hill bred lambs to £150 for heavy weight Mashams, £139 heavy horned, £135 standard Cheviots.

A top of 370p/kg for Texel crosses from T & E Burrow, other well finished standards 330p/kg to 350p/kg, grass finished 310p/kg to 325p/kg. It would be the heavy lambs and underfinished that met resistance from bidders today with this reflected in the market average of 305p/kg.

PRIME HOGGS

Tuesday trade lifts the blue Monday blues.

After yesterdays so called blue Monday, todays prime hoggs traded better than many expected, with buyers keen to compete for well finished sheep.

Quality was once again the key driver, with smart continental hoggs leading the way topping at 378ppk for Texels from AW & D Brown. Well finished hoggs either side of 40kg mark met the strongest competition returning an overall average of 309ppk, while the sqq settled at 319ppk, underlining a trade that felt far more positive than some had anticipated. Heavies proved harder work topping at £181 for a pair of Su olk from Messrs AG Butler. Bigger texels hit £179 from Messrs J Allonby. As mentioned before Messrs Brown hit 378ppk for Texels. Others sold to 366.7ppk from AT Burrow and 363.2ppk from JD Dixon. Lighter hoggs also a strong trade. 37kg Cheviots sold to 340.5ppkg again from Messrs AW & D Brown. Even lighter 32kg hoggs sold for 337.5ppk from Messrs J Clarke.

Demand continues to be big here at J36 resulting in a highly competitive trade accompanied by prompt payment and a smile.

CAST SHEEP

Steam ever so slightly out the ewes but a very pleasing trade on the whole.

Topping this week was the Benson Hall boys selling the best of their run to £260 twice. Medium continentals selling £175-£200 with the best mules to £160. Horned ewes still perhaps looking the dearest selling to £156 for Blackface from A Kirkby, Kirkby Stephen with well fleshed horned ewes regularly selling top side of £110.

Buyers in attendance keen to keep pens full and once again several new customers in attendance.

Steers sold to £1520 for Aberdeen Angus from JJ & J Woof & Sons with Limousin x (7/8 months old) from B Heyes selling to £1490 and £1410 for ring fulls. Yearlings generally £1300-£1450 depending on quality and type. Younger steers to £1420 for Limousin x from JH Barker & Son and £1400 from SW Atkinson & Son. Younger steers £1100-£1300. Dairy bred steers to £1150 for 9-month-old Montbeliardes.

Heifers peaked at £1430 for a 6-month-old red Limousin x from B Heyes with others at £1420 from JH Barker & Son and £1400 from B Wilson & Sons. Well bred younger suckler bred heifers £1150-£1320. Recently weaned dairy bred heifers to £740 for British Blue x and Aberdeen Angus x to £680.

Bull stirks sold to £1480 for Aberdeen Angus x from AT Threlkeld who also sold South Devon x at £1360. Continental bulls to £1380 for Blonde x from MT Howarth. Younger bulls to £1100 for 5-month-old Hereford x with others from the same home £1050£1090. 6/7-month-old Dairy bred bulls to £940 for Aberdeen Angus x, £900 for Beef Shorthorn x and £800 for Hereford x.

Twigge hits the top branch. Todays store cattle trade, was firmly rooted in confidence and it was Mr J Twigge who rose through the canopy to hit the tip branch of the market, topping the sale with a standout run that caught plenty of eyes ringside. Demand was very firm throughout with buyers quick to compete for cattle of all types including shape, strength and future potential, underlining a healthy and encouraging trade.

OTM/CAST CATTLE

NWA J36 once again proved to be the market of choice for both sellers and buyers. A market average of 256p/kg was achieved for an entry being 60% dairy cows.

Best of the beef cows sold to 364.5p/kg for Limousin x from NP & CE Buckley with others nicely 310-345p/kg and feeding types 275-290p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was a Limousin x from RC Wharton & Son totalling £2649. Other well fleshed beef cows nicely £2000+.

Dairy cows sold to 279.5p/kg for Holstein Friesian from Messrs Dennison, other fleshed cows 240-260p/kg and parlour sorts 190-210p/kg. Top grossing achieving £1880 from MS & G Mason.

OTM beef heifers sold to 314.5p/kg for Aberdeen Angus x from JG & BJ Escolme and dairy heifers to 299.5p/kg for Norwegian Red from R & J Dodgson. Top grossing being a black & white from BW & G Robinson at £2150.

Bulls sold to 329.5p/kg and £2540 for Stabiliser from A Dixon & Son who sold stock bulls at 249.5p/kg and £2560.

More required each sale to fulfil buyers requirements. Cull cow vendors are encouraged to arrive in good time to allow stock to be lotted for a sale start time of 10:30am. Market gates open from 6:30am.

CALVES

A nice show of calves met a trade with more momentum than last week, with all sold to average £630.93. Bull calves reached £840 for a Limousin from D&M Foster, Out Rawcli e with Aberdeen Angus from IT Richardson, Catforth next at £810 and £790. British Blues sold to £780 from JS Tower & H Kent, Dolphinholme with eight week old Hereford to £760 from WN&D Smith, Cockerham. Thirty day old bulls sold to £630 for Aberdeen Angus and £610 for British Blue both from JC Hewitt & Family, Nateby. Black and White bulls a flying trade reaching £440 from JS Towers & H Kent, Dolphinholme.

Heifer calves did not disappoint, reaching £820 for a British Blue from A&MA Wright, Roeburndale with Limousin from D&M Foster, Out Rawcli e selling to £790. Aberdeen Angus to £700 from IT Richardson, Catforth with all bar a few small editions selling over £500.

Lancasters renowned weekly sale of store cattle saw 200 again through the main ring, with a slight edge of the trade with buyers on a more cautious note, as talks of another drop in deadweight prime prices looming. Best and biggest stores still over the £2450 barrier, with DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland topping the trade yet again with his quality run of cattle, with a Limousin steer at £2600. Other strong Limousin Steers to £2400 from H Chapman & Son, Carnforth. Angus steers, as always, very popular at Lancaster with R & E Butterfield who had a pair to £2480, with another pair from EW & CR Clegg, Stalmine at £2450. Heifer store cattle saw P & S Alpe, Waddington with their Angus heifers to £2180 with others from the same home at £2150, who also had Limousins at the same price. British Blues to £2150 for a pair from Holgate Caravans, Carnforth with others at the same from from SH & LE Birkett, Carnforth. Herefords from local Lancaster supporter DJ Towney, Stodday to £2080 for a pair.

OTM/CAST CATTLE

The OTM ring at Lancaster bucks the trend of falling beef prices, with a very pleasing average of 259p/kg, including some leaner types.

Top price per head and pence per kilo goes to a British Blue cow at £2457.18 or 369.5p/kg from HR & KA Hodgson, Barbon. Other beef bred OTM Cows from GR & A Foy, Conder Green too saw his Aberdeen Angus to £2298.84 or 269.5p/kg and Shorthorns to £2281 or 309.5p/kg, with Limousin OTM Cows to 354.5p/kg from CA & J Alty, Carnforth.

Dairy bred OTM Cows from RG & B Lewis, Carnforth to £2245 or 264.5p/kg for Friesians, with other Friesians to £2141 or 274.5p/kg from EW & RM Towers, Hornby.

OTM Heifers saw an average of 317.68p/kg, topping at 359.5p/kg or £2228.90 from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham for a British Blue. Other British Blues at 349.5p/kg from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton. Angus OTM Heifers to 324.5p/kg from Wilmar Farms, Hereford OTM heifers to 344.5p/kg from WS Burrow Ltd, Silverdale. Friesian OTM heifers to 309.5p/kg from RE & P Miller, Barnacre.

Just a handful of Cast Steers topping at £2364.52 or 354.5p/kg for a Longhorn from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton.

Just one Cast bull today to 259.5p/kg from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyersdale.
