Lancaster Dairy Tuesday 20th October 2020 The monthly show and sale of dairy cattle at North West Auctions saw the largest entry seen at Lancaster Auction mart for several years. In turn attracting customers from throughout the Northern Counties, Scotland, Wales and the Midlands. North West Auctions were pleased to be able to offer potential purchasers the opportunity to bid online with successful bids on the internet securing cattle to several clients and registered interest from as far a field as Devon and Cornwall. The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Mr David Wallbank, Over Wyresdale, who had a wonderful entry presented before him in the 3 show classes. After much deliberation the Championship rosette was awarded to ‘Pennine Poppy 1483’ from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with the Reserve rosette won by Tomlinson Bilsrow Ltd, Bilsborrow showing ‘Bilsrow Applejax Snowboots 3’.
New Calved Heifers: Pedigree Heifers sold to a top price of £2,850, for a heifer of the renowned ‘Poppy’ family from the Pennine Herd of Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. ‘Pennine Poppy 1483’ was freshly calved mid September and giving 34 Litres. Next in the price list was ‘Wyredale Lego Aster 223’ from MJ & H Atkinson, Quernmore bred from an EX91 LP110 dam she sold for a final bid of £2,700. The pick of the lot from Tomlinson Bilsrow Ltd, Bilsborrow was ‘Bilsrow Applejax Snowboots 3’ giving 34 Litres having calved on 29th September at £2,620. EH & R Eccles, Brindle sold ‘Denhamhill District Daisy 2’ at £2,500 with their eye catching ‘Denhamhill Daisy Red’ bred from an EX90 dam attracting several enthusiastic admirers and selling for a final bid of £2,450. A fast trade was experienced for heifers with all sold averaging an impressive £2,213.
InIn -Calf Heifers: A consignment of Pedigree In-Calf Jersey Heifers from Newhouse Farming Ltd, Dumfries, all due December to a Aberdeen Angus Bull saw a top price of £1080 achieved on three occasions, others to £1050, £1020 with all sold to an average of £1003.
Youngstock: An entry of Friesian Bulling heifers from JT & U Garth, Ellel, attracted keen interest selling to £980 (19mo) with others selling to £920.
New Calved Cows:
Pedigree cows saw a top price of £1950 for the 1st prize cow ‘Goadsbarrow Bryant Snowdrop’ from AV Lord & Co, Ulverston, bred from an EX94 dam and fresh into her 3rd lactation giving 44 Litres. The 2nd prize cow from MJ & H Atkinson, Quernmore, ‘Wyredale Endure Bendy 196’, also fresh into her 3rd lactation giving 35 litres, sold for a final bid of £1750. A special mention must be given to Mrs Beth Ladds who showed ‘Helsington Lemonhead Lightning’ VG85, a very smart Jersey Cow fresh into her 2nd lactation achieving £1,400.
Dispersal Sale: A feature of today’s sale was the dispersal sale of the milking and in-calf portion of the dairy herd on behalf of JK & A Bowness & Son. This genuine herd of cows attracted keen interest from a wide audience of buyers. This sale saw a top price of £2280 achieved for a newly calved Friesian type 2nd calved cow with heifers of the same breeding selling to £2020 and £2000. A super 3rd calved cow attracted several admirers selling for a final bid of £1950. The in-calf section saw a top price of £1920 achieved for the last animal of the day, an in-calf heifer due November/ December. In-Calf heifers regularly sold at £1100-£1400. Several Jersey cows saw a top price of £1250 with others achieving £1020.

J36 Sale Reports Lakeland Fair Saturday 17th October 2020 North West Auctions, J36 held its annual Lakeland Fair which continues to go from strength to strength, attracting a full variety of breeding sheep and our annual end of season ram sale to include Swaledale and Cheviot rams. Breeding Sheep, Shearlings and Gimmer Lambs A strong trade was enjoyed throughout the sale with all types of sheep eagerly bid for. The sale commenced in Ring 1 with hill going sheep. Swaledale ewes met plenty of demand selling to a top of £138 from D Blackmore, Milton Keynes for 2 crop ewes. Draft ewes from Forest Hall sold to £116 and £110, with Swaledale gimmer lambs, once again for Forest Hall, selling to £65 and £60 twice. Swaledale gimmer shearlings sold to £115 from G Sibson, Penrith. Rough Fell ewes sold to a top of £84 from J & PR Woof, Dent with Rough Fell shearlings to £80 from NC & S Dodd, Kirkby Stephen and Rough Fell gimmer lambs peaked at £72 from T Ellis, New Hutton. Cheviot ewes twice sold to £90 from Farming for Nature, Naddle with Cheviot gimmer lambs selling to £70 from SM & CM Bewley. Herdwick sheep were the trade of the day, selling to a top of £86 from E Parker, Carnforth with others £80 from B Dickinson & Co, Kentmere. With plenty of pens of strong Herdwick ewes selling around the £70 mark. Herdwick shearlings sold to a top of £95 from G Armstrong, Nibthwaite. All Herdwick shearlings averaged £87.
Gimmer Lambs: There was a nice entry of gimmer lambs for this end of season sale, which saw Scotch Mule gimmer lambs sell to £105 from JM & AM Morland, Kirkby Stephen who sold others at £192. North Country Mule gimmer lambs sold to £82 from Drinkall Bros, Lancaster and E Parker, Carnforth. Texel gimmer lambs sold to £90 from B & M Slater, Chipping. A trio of Zwartbles from A Crowe and H Rawlinson achieved £90.
Shearlings: Mule shearlings sold to £155 from L Sibson, Cockermouth with other pens nicely selling at £125 - £135. A pen of Cheviot Mules from A Bradley, Crosthwaite achieved £120. A pen of pure Texel shearlings from Lucas & Nairey sold to £300 twice and £250.
Ewes: A wide range of ewes were on offer with younger Mules £95 - £100, Continentals £85 - £120. Older ewes of all breeds were a competitive trade achieving £70 - £90.
Breeding Rams: The annual sale of Swaledale rams at J36 saw tups well bid for. Leading the way was a consignment of shearlings from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. Topping at £650 sired by the £19,000 Bull and Cave tup, followed by others at £450 and £350. EW & JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge sold a shearling to £600. Aged rams sold to a top of £350 from RM & D Dixon, Longsleddale with others to £320 from RA Clegg & LD Bennet, Seathwaite. Cheviot tups sold to £300 from SC & HB Robinson, Dunsop Bridge as well as KO Stones, Maverick. Leicester rams peaked at £400 from AW & AM Clarke, Troutbeck, with other Leicesters to £400 from TL B & J Knowles, Selside. Terminal sire rams saw Texel shearlings sell to £550 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston followed by others to £520 from Lucas & Nairey, Blackburn, with plenty of powerful, shapey terminal sire rams selling into the 400s.

J36 Reports Calves, Stirks, OTM Cattle & Store Cattle Thursday 15th October 2020 NWA J36 had an entry of 386 cattle forward at their fortnightly sale which saw all classes and types achieve their full value. The market topped at £460 for a wonderful Simmental Bull from AK&BM Robinson & Son, Arkholme. J Hornby & Son, Stank had a run of Blue bulls peaking at £425, with others selling to £400 from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington. GCL Stephenson, Kirkby Lonsdale showed a good run of Limousin Bulls which peaked at £350, with others selling to £320. Plenty of Beef bull calves easily selling in excess of the £300 mark. British Blue heifer calves sold to £395 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth with other Blue heifers selling to £300 from JR Robinson & Son, Nook. Limousin Heifers sold to £280 from WH Kitching & Sons, Hale. Heifer calves were selling between £220-£350 mark. A smaller show of Black & Whites forward with the best to £120 from CM&CS Chappelhow, Clifton Dykes. Medium types selling between £60-£75 with a top of £90 from RF&CE Hodgson, Pennington There was an increased entry of 78 Stirks. All stirks were well bid for with all vendors leaving pleased. Angus bullocks were leading the way with a top of £795 from WR Clarke & Partners, Yealand Redmayne with other Angus bullocks to £690 from R Lawson & Son, Burton in Kendal. British Blue bullocks peaked at £620 from Kirkby & Longworth, Dunnerdale with others to £610 from P Eastham, Broughton Mills. Flekvieh bullocks to £550 from P Eastham, with Dairy Shorthorn bullocks to £380 from M Kitching & S Smith. All heifers keenly bid for with British Blue heifers to £580 from SM&CM Bewley, Dent. A strong entry of Cull Cows was forward with a top price of 124p/kg achieved for a Holstein Friesian from WH Kitching & Son, Sedgwick with other heavy well fleshed cows generally achieving 115-122p/kg, with a plainer show of cows generally selling 95-108p/kg. Top grossing was from the same home achieving £957. OTM heifers sold to 119.5p/kg for a British Friesian from CM&CS Chappelhow, Penrith. Top grossing heifer being £654 achieved BW&G Robinson, Ingleton selling a Holstein Friesian. Several OTM steers forward today selling to 184p/kg and £1105 for British Blue x from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton who also sold Angus x at 179p/kg or £922. Vendors are encouraged to bring Cull Cows forward as early as possible to ensure a prompt sale time start of 10.03am, market gates are open at 7am to receive stock.

Lancaster Reports Store Cattle Sale, Friday 16th October The weekly sale of Calves and Weanlings had an increased entry of 93 forward. A wide selection of types of calves were on offer this week to suit all those looking to purchase. Once again plenty of top quality British Blue calves were selling in excess of the £400 mark. Leading the way this week was the consignment from J & G Thornley, Kirkham selling to £485 and £420 with heifers. British Blue bull calves sold to a top of £430 and £420 from AJ & AJ Gibbons, St Michaels on Wyre with heifers from the same home selling to £375 and £365. Charolais bull calves sold to £380 and £365 twice from the Sutcliffe's, Cockerham whom sold Charolais heifers to £340 twice. Angus bull calves sold to £355 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham with Lawsons Farm, Cockerham selling to £350 and £340. Native bull calves continue to meet plenty of demand with native heifers slightly easier this week. Black and white bull calves sold to a top of £90 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. A handful of stirks and Weanlings saw Angus steers selling to £640 from Tom Barron Farms, Woodplumpton. Weanling Angus bull calves sold to £455 and regularly in the early four hundreds from JK & B Birkett & Son, Morecambe.

Lancaster once again had an entry in excess of 300 Store Cattle forward. The short keep cattle continue to be in stronger demand with larger numbers of store cattle forward everywhere. The cast cow trade in Lancaster was slightly easier but once again Lancaster saw a stronger trade then many other local outlets and continues to be the place to market your OTM cattle. An entry of 119 sold to an overall Market average of 118p/kg. Lancaster continues to offer a strong trade for OTM cattle. Heifers sold to a top of 214.5p/kg for Limousins from T & S Blades, Keerholme grossing £1096. Shorthorn heifers sold to 197.5p/kg from JM Capstick, Ashton with Stodday selling to £1232. The consignment of cattle from WS Burrow and Sons, Silverdale sold Limousin bullocks to 191.5p/kg and heifers to 189.5p/kg topping at £1053. Dairy cast steers sold to 181.5p/kg from J & H Bland and Son, Levens with the consignment selling to £1341 and £1322. Well meated OTM black and white heifers were often selling in excess of 150p/kg topping at £1104 from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham. Lancaster Reports Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep Monday 19th October Numbers remain strong at Lancaster with 816 forward. There was a very mixed entry of Lambs forward today in terms of quality and finish. Nearly a third of the lambs in the Market were Mule and Swaledale lambs as well as many markets reporting an easier trade on the week. This led to an overall market average of 184p/kg with a SQQ average of 186p/kg. It was the consignment of Texel and Beltex cross lambs from B & SE Carter, Ellel that led the way selling to a top of £105 or 239p/kg with others from the same home selling to £96 and £95.50, with plenty of pens of better bred Texel lambs selling into the nineties. Good confirmation, handy weight Texel lambs continue to sell in excess of 210p/kg. Mule lambs sold to a top of £84 from J Bargh and Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe with plenty of pens of Mule lambs selling in the early eighties. Horned lambs sold around the 170p/kg mark.

Good Continental sheep continue to sell in the region of £100. The market was topped by A & L Huddleston, Wray selling Leicester ewes to £105. Selling to £101 were Texel ewes from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof with others to £100 from G & D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston who also sold Suffolk ewes to the same price. Plenty more ewes were sold in the nineties. Mule ewes sold to a top of £69 from JE & J Pye, Quernmore. Horned ewes sold to a top of £61 from A & L Huddleston, Wray with Swaledales. All horned ewes were eagerly bid for and meeting plenty of demand. A few more tups in the market saw Lonks sell to £90 from A & L Huddleston, Wray.

J36 Sale Reports Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep Tuesday 20th October North West Auctions J36 held its weekly sale of Prime Lambs with an entry of 1681 forward. A very mixed trade saw handy weighted lambs in most demand and best to sell, with heavyweight lambs an easier trade this week. An overall market average of 186p/kg with an SQQ of 192p/kg to include a large proportion of upland lambs. Leading the way today were heavyweight, shapey Texel lambs selling to a top of £110 from ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth. At £106.50 was JJ & S Raine, Appleby with other heavy Texel lambs at £104 from Wannop Farms. Today saw the best confirmation lambs selling in excess of 212p/kg, selling to a top of 236p/kg or £104 from JJ & S Raine, Appleby with others from the same home selling to 230p/kg. The consignment from JG & PH Thompson sold to 229p/kg twice. All Beltex lambs forward averaged 225p/kg. There was a large entry of Mule lambs forward today which saw a large entry of Cheviot Mules selling to £87 from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside. Rough Fell Mules sold to £85.50 from M Bland & Sons, Staveley, with plenty more pens of Mules selling into the early to mid eighties.

A similar entry of cast ewes were forward today as last week, with all ewes continuing to be a strong trade at J36. Strong Texel ewes were selling in the £100 plus mark from E Dodgson, Kendal. With other Texel ewes selling to £98 from JG & PH Thompson, Selside. Strong Mule ewes were still selling into the eighty pound mark with a top of £84 twice from J H Atkinson & Partners, Selside and AW Crowe, Witherslack. Medium type Mule ewes were selling in the region of £68 - £72. Strong Leicester ewes sold to £100 from DE & J Waine, Longsleddale. There was a bigger show of hill ewes forward today with meaty ewes continuing to sell to a strong trade. Cheviot ewes topped this section at £80 from RH & M & S Boyren, Colton with a pen full from GW Robinson & Son, Crooklands selling to £77 and Lonks from this same home selling to £64. Strong Swaledale ewes were selling in the £55-£60 with a top of £63 from A Hartley, Seathwaite with others to £58 from A Hodgson, Pennington. Medium type ewes sold into the £35 – £40 mark, depending upon quality. Another strong trade was also seen for all cast rams, with Teeswater rams topping this section at £112 from DE & J Waine, Longsleddale and Derbyshire Gritstones selling to £96 from A Ruehorn-Hyde, Appleby, with buyers looking for all types of cast rams.
