Lancaster Dairy Sale, Tuesday 18th May 2021 May Dairy Delights sell to £2500 at NWA Lancaster North West Auctions held its monthly collective sale of Dairy Cattle at Lancaster Auction Mart on Tuesday 18th May. A high quality catalogue of entries attracted a large crowd of local and travelled buyers, all keen to secure replacements from this renowned sale. All venders must be complimented on the quality of cattle presented at the sale, which was a wonderful advert for what Lancaster Dairy Sale offers. Today we were pleased to welcome back the Pre – Sale Show, which was judged by Mr John Sanderson (Sandcrest) and kindly sponsored by Massey Feeds, Farmgate Vets and Paxtons. The Show Champion was found from a wonderful line up of heifers, this heifer ‘Pennine Poppy 1524 shown by Drinkall Bros, Abbeystead. The Heifer was sired by Ladys – Manor Lamar. The Reserve Champion was ‘Bilsrow Goodwhone Peg 3’ from Tomlinson Bilsrow Ltd, Bilsborrow. A special mention must go to the highly admired 1st place cow, ‘Goadsbarrow Sincere 52’, fresh into her 3rd lactation shown by A V Lord & Co, Aldingham. A keen ringside of buyers saw all heifers forward experience competitive bidding with all cattle selling above vendors expectations. The sale peaked at £2500 which was achieved on 2 occasions, firstly for The Show Champion ‘Pennine Poppy 1524’ from Drinkall Bros, Abbeystead. This was later followed by the Reserve Champion ‘Bilsrow Goodwhone Peg 3’ from Tomlinson Bilsrow Ltd, Bilsborrow. Other heifers to break the £2200 barrier were ‘Bilsrow Goodwhone Rolls 5’ achieving £2450 and ‘Pennine Poppy 1529’ selling at £2250. ‘Goadsbarrow Peach 26’ from A V Lord & Co, Aldingham met a final bid of £2150. M J & H Atkinson, Lancaster sold ‘Wyredale Mardi Gras Kate 54’ at £1920 with this prize also achieving by Barber Farms, Claughton on Brock who sold ‘Highhopes Mayday Vackje A’. Cows sold to £2000 for the first prize ‘Goadsbarrow Sincere 52’ from AV Lord & Co, Aldingham. The sale concluded with a pair of much admired bulls, which sold to £2100 for ‘Stardale Vitton from J Burrow & Son, Barton and ‘Phoenix Flower Power Red’ from A E & A Swales, Blackburn selling at £2000. Sale Reports Lancaster Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Monday 17th May 2021 Lancaster Auction had a reduced entry of Spring Lambs forward this week with more needed to satisfy our buyers’ requirements. Today saw an overall market average of 325p/kg. Pure Texel, 45kg lambs from JR Gorst, Dolphinholme sold to £166 purchased by Gregory William Butchers, Lancaster, with other pure Texels from the same home selling to £150. The consignment of Texel lambs from A & E Clarkson, Thurnham sold to £156 and £153, this was followed by S Wilson & Son Scotforth selling to £153 and £150. Texel lambs from RC Billington & Son, Claughton-on-Brock sold to £150 and £147. Other noted Texel prices were £146 from P D Anderton, Scorton, £145 from C Ellison, Pilling and £144 from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham who also topped the Suffolk section selling to £143. As more companies are changing on to Spring Lambs, Lancaster is looking for more Spring Lambs to fulfil our eight active buyers’ requirements.

Lancaster had a reduced number of Prime Hoggs in the market today, that saw Texels sell to £130 from Barker Farms, Cockerham and Mashams topping at £120 from FK & F Woodhouse, Scorton.

Following on from last week's large number forward, there was a reduced number on offer with trade slightly less following on from last week’s Ramadam festival but cast sheep were still eagerly bid for and in strong demand. Continental ewes sold to £112 and £109 from K A Purtill, Wigan. Mule ewes peaked at £111 from GS Lambert, Warrington. Plenty of Mule ewes were selling to the £80-£90 mark.

J36 Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep, Tuesday 18th May 2021 There was an entry of 188 families of sheep with lambs at foot meeting plenty of demand and eagerly bid for, especially a growing demand for hill bred sheep. Taking top spot this week were young continental ewes with twin lambs selling to £260 from S Bosworth, Burnley. This was followed by continental shearlings sucking twin Dutch spotted lambs achieving £250 from the same home, Dutch spotted cross hoggs with single Dutch spotted lambs sold to £200. This week the hogg trade peaked at £205 from JA Chapman, Kendal. Aged mule ewes sold to £190 with twin lambs from Low House Farm, Longsleddale. A larger number of hill sheep forward saw three crop Cheviot ewes with twin Continental lambs sell to £175 from GJ & CA Penellum, Millom, with three crop Cheviot ewes with single Texel ewes selling to £150. Broken mouthed Herdwick ewes with young Continental twin lambs at foot sold to £135 from MR Toms, Great Langdale with singles from the same home selling to £90. A busy week next Tuesday 25th May with the second show and sale of hoggs with lambs at foot, with over 250 families entered so far, plus sheep with lambs at foot to include the dispersal of 120 Rough Fell Ewes with lambs from Low House Farm, Longsleddale.

The weekly sale of spring lambs had an entry of 287 forward, selling to an overall market average of 321 p/kg and SQQ of 325 p/kg. Continental lambs sold to a top of £160 from DJ Clarke, Broughton-in-Furness, purchased by Higginson’s Butchers, Grange-Over-Sands. This was followed by the consignment from Helen Newton, Low Levens selling to £154 for Continentals, with Suffolks from the same home selling to £153. Charollais lambs sold to £149 from DJ Clarke, Broughton-in-Furness, closely followed by £147 from RJ Stott, Stainton. Other noted prices for Suffolks were £147 twice from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton followed by £146.50 and £146 from J & R Waller, Killington. Texel lambs sold to £145 from B & JM Crowe, Witherslack. Plenty of pens of lambs from the mid 40kg upwards sold in excess of the £140 mark.

Well fleshed handy Weighted hoggs still sold in excess of the 300 p/kg mark. Trade this week topped at £129 from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston, with a pen of 44kg Cheviots. The run of hoggs from JG Harryman, Hawkshead sold to £128, £127.50 and £126. Hill bred hoggs saw well finished Herdwicks sell to £126 from GM & A Jackson, with Scottish Blackfaces from the same home achieving £123.

A reduced entry of cull ewes forward with all selling to their full value today, with many more needed to fulfil the needs of our buyers. Texel ewes once again led the way selling to £128 from JW & A Matthews, Patton who sold others to £125. Leicester ewes saw a top of £116 from NJ Strickland & Son, Whinfell with S Proctor, Selside selling a run of Dorset ewes to a top of £112. A strong run of Ryeland ewes from T & E Redmayne, Southwaite sold to a top of £102 with others from the same home selling to £100. A keen interest was shown for all Mule ewes forward with a top of £116 from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth. Medium fit Mule ewes were regularly selling between the £100-£105 mark. MJ Waller, Lupton sold strong Cheviot Mule ewes to £116. A smaller show of hill ewes forward with the best selling to a fast trade, a top of £103 for Swaledale ewes from DR & JE Wood, Bolton with medium type Swaledale ewes selling between the mid to late £70 mark. A small show of cast rams forward with all selling to their full value again. Texel rams sold to £190 from B & JM Crowe, Witherslack and Ryelands sold to £120 from T&E Redmayne, Southwaite.

Lancaster Calves, Store Cattle & OTM’s Friday 21st May 2021 A cracking day in the calf ring today at Lancaster saw an entry of 130 forward, met by the usual crowd of buyers plus some new customers who were very impressed with the quality and quantity on offer. Charolais bull calves led the way topping at £500 for a bull calf at 1 month and 8 days old from Wannop Farms, Heaton-with-Oxcliffe. Other Charolais bull calves sold to £495 for a 6-week-old from Drinkall Brothers, Over Wyresdale. British Blue bull calves twice peaked at £480, firstly from AJ & AJ Gibbons, St Michaels-on-Wyre, with EA & E Lund & Son, Nether Kellet also achieving £480. This was closely followed by £470 from AD & R Milner, Claughton-on-Brock, £465 from G & M E Woodhouse & Sons, Ellel and £455 from T & G Parkinson, Out Rawcliffe. British Blue heifers sold to £465 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham, followed by £450 from CR & A Baxter & Son, Middleton and £445 from G & M E Woodhouse & Son, Ellel. All British Blue bulls forward averaged £367.50, with British Blue heifers averaging £353.16.

Friesian bull calves met plenty of demand in Lancaster, peaking at £205 from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham. With Drinkall Brothers twice achieving £200 and others to £195 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. All the 22 Friesian bull calves forward averaged £146.50.

Sale Reports Lancaster Calves, Store Cattle & OTM’s Friday 21st May 2021 Lancaster once again had an offering in the region of 200 store cattle, selling to a slightly easier trade following many outlets reporting a drop of 20p/kg deadweight. Leading the way was a pen of three Angus bullocks selling to £1550 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. Angus bullocks from R & DM Rossall & Sons, Pilling sold to £1460 with British Blues from the same home achieving £1370. The consignment from J Prest & Son saw Angus bullocks sell to £1400 with British Blue and Limousin bullocks from the same home selling to £1380 and also sold Herefords to £1360. A pen of four Angus bullocks from J Hesketh, Hutton sold to £1350, followed by a pen of three to £1340 from J & M Maudsley & Son, Endmoor. This week the heifer trade peaked at £1340 for a pair of Angus from L Parson & Sons, Levens. A pen of three Beef Shorthorn sold to £1260 from R & E A Gardner, Brigsteer. Limousin heifers sold to £1240 from WA Hodgson, Whinfell with British Blues to £1200 from J & M Walmsley, Pilling. Pure Limousin cast cows sold to 197.5 p/kg or 1441 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Limousin cows from B & SE Cater, Ellel sold to 187.5 p/kg and 184.5 /kg. Other beef cows saw Simmentals sell to £1366 and £1348 from Barlow Bros, Croston. Black and Whites saw cast steers sell to 194.5 p/kg or £1293 from I Atkinson & Son, Warton. Black and White OTM heifers sold to 187.5 p/kg from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham.
