Show & Sale of Dairy Cattle Lancaster Auction Mart Monday 19th February The monthly sale of dairy cattle had an entry of 37 forward this month. This month’s show was kindly judged by Thomas Ayrton of Thurnham, who we thank for his time and expertise. A strong line up of Heifers was put before the judge who awarded the Championship Rosette to Lot 14 ‘Stardale Cruise Vaakje’, yielding 40kg selling to £1980 from J Burrow & Son of Barton. The Reserve Champion rosette was awarded to Lot 13 ‘Stardale Baloo Stella’ selling for £1800, again from the Burrow’s Family. The trade topped today for Lot 8 from DJ & S Tomlinson of Bilsborrow selling ‘Bilsrow Menthol Roxy 2’ for £2100. Two Heifers sold for £1900, again J Burrow & Son with Lot 15 ‘Stardale Alta1stClass Vaakje’ yielding 34kg with 9 VG/EX generations, and also from AB & J Parkinson & Son of Out Rawcliffe with Lot 38 ‘Liscabank Baloo Jen Molly’ yielding 40kg with 5 VG/EX generations. The trade was slightly easier than the previous month’s sale, as was expected with the current drop in milk price and the shortage of fodder. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 16th February Lancaster had over 300 Store Cattle through the market once again, selling to a buoyant trade throughout. All were eagerly bid for selling to a good trade. An impressive consignment of Continental Bullocks from DW & NM Alderson of Middleton with Limousins selling to £1440, British Blues to £1410 and Charolais to £1380, with Aberdeen Angus’s from the same good home topping at £1,300. Heifers sold to a top of £1,290 from WA Hodgson of Whinfell for Charolais with British Blues selling to a top of £1280 from JD & GM Bracken of Garstang. Black and white bullocks sold to a top of £1040 from MG & J Parker of Wennington. Overall there were 39 cattle that sold in excess of £1,200. This week saw another entry in excess of 100 Cast Cows forward at Lancaster. There was a plainer entry of Cast Cows including more cows straight out of the parlour reflecting the overall market average of 130p/kg. All Cast Cows forward sold to an average of 120p/kg with Black and Whites selling to an average of 114p/kg. A selection of Continental Bulls around 30 months old sold to a top of 209.5p/kg and 204.5p/kg three times or to £1,543 from DM & D Smith of Ulverston. There was plenty of interest in the calf ring today with a fresh face ring side looking for calves which always helps. British Blue Heifer calves sold to £305 and £295 from T & CM Kelsal of Brown Brook. Angus bulls topped at £260 from David and Eileen Wallbank of Tills Farm. Monday 5th February There was a smaller entry of Prime Hoggs in the market today, selling to a sharper trade than last week, finishing with an overall market average of 211p/kg. Hoggs weighing 39kg-50kg averaged 219p/kg. Best Hoggs sold to a top of 250p/kg for Texels from AG Butler of Hambleton, closely followed by Texels at 247p/kg from A Birchall of Dolphinholme. Plenty of pens of Texel Hoggs sold either side of 230p/kg mark. Topping the market today at £114 was 51kg Texel Hoggs from RS & IM Kellet of Cockerham. Benson Farms sold 45kg Texels to £110 with their whole consignment averaging well over the £100 mark. Numerous pens of Prime Hoggs sold in excess of £100. Mule Hoggs sold to a top of £98 from RH & C Ayrton of Abbeystead. There was a larger quantity of Horned Hoggs on the market today with Swaledales selling to £96 from KM & KJ Curwen of Abbeystead and Lonks selling to £94.50 from Cardwell Farms of Stalmine. The Mule trade topped at £80 from M PG Gibson of Crosthwaite closely followed by WJ & I France and Son of Chipping. There was plenty of pens of short term hoggs selling into the seventies. Horned lambs topped at £54 for Herdwicks from TW & J Beaty of Troutbeck with Rough Fells selling to £52.50 from J Black and Son of Kentmere. Tuesday 6th February The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs saw a larger entry this week with just shy of 1200 forward. There was a very mixed entry in the Market with a large entry of hill hoggs and vendors last draw of hoggs, selling to an overall average of 206p/kg. Well fleshed Continental hoggs were easily sold again, often selling in excess of 220p/kg. Beltex hoggs were again a very strong trade at J36 selling to a top of 286p/kg or £114.50 from JR & A Foy of Conder Green and other hoggs from the same home selling to 280p/kg or £109.50. This was closely followed by J Smith of Lancaster selling Beltex hoggs to 270p/kg or £100. All Beltex hoggs forward sold to a Market average 255p/kg. There was a special entry of a Texel hogg from AW & AM Clarke of Troutbeck which was sold in aid of Cumbria Blood Bikes for £121 to Lancaster Halal Direct. Once again heavyweight hoggs were in strong demand with good conformed hoggs over 50kg selling easily in excess of 200p/kg, twice topping at £119 from PW Rhodes of Ulverston and JR Robinson of Endmoor. There were more hill bred hoggs in the Market today with 46kg Mules topping at £99.50 from TE JS & SA Carruthers of Underbarrow and 46kg Mashams selling to £99.50 from DC Miller of Claughton on Brock and Mule hogs selling to a top of £227p/kg from WI & AM Atkinson of Bleasdale. There were plenty of pens of Mule and Masham hoggs selling in excess of the 200p/kg mark. Best horned hoggs sold to 200p/kg, with Swaledales selling to a top of £88.50 from C Jackson of Ingleton. A similar number of Cast Ewes in the Market today as last week with trade very dependent upon the quality of the sheep; a large quantity today being lean and plain ewes. Best heavyweight Continental and Suffolk ewes sold in excess of the £100 mark, topping at £126 from TA Blair of Thornton in Cleveleys. Texel ewes topped at £122 from R & E Ladds of Kendal. The biggest cast rams were selling in excess of the £100 mark, topping at £106 for Teeswaters from DC Miller of Claughton on Brock, closely followed by Leicesters at £105 from RM & D Dixon of Longsleddale. Best Mule ewes sold to £80 twice from R & E Ladds of Kendal and JB & I Ellis of New Hutton with plenty of good Mule ewes selling into the late £70s. Swaledale ewes topped at £71 from JA Alderson from Barras, with well fleshed horned ewes in the £50s and £60s.
