NWA Lancaster Friday 9th December The last weekly sale of Store Cattle of 2016 had an entry of 225 forward for the sale. A strong trade for cattle throughout the sale with all types of cattle eagerly bid for and selling to a sharper trade. Thirty cattle sold for £1,200 or more selling to a top of £1,350 from David Moorhouse of Natland with a Limousin steer. An impressive pen of four Limousin steers from PE & M Capstick of Whicham Hall sold to £1,320. Native bred cattle always good to sell at Lancaster selling to a top of £1,300 for a pen of four powerful Angus steers from K & DE Woodhouse of Kitchen Ground. Angus heifers sold to a top of £1,100 for a pen of four from W & A Cardwell of Well House Farm. As store cattle numbers start to decrease nationally black and white steers sold to a sharper trade today and more demand for them selling to a top of £1,150 from J Lamb of Old Glasson with all black and white steers selling to a market average of £831.

The last Cast Cow sale of the year had an entry of 95 selling to a market average of 106ppk. The trade topped at 179.5ppk or £1,032 from A Dixon and Son of Kit Cragg with a stabiliser cow. OTM heifers continue to be in strong demand at Lancaster and they topped at 164.5ppk from Fishwick Farms of Silverdale or £1,087 from AT Burrow and Son of High Snab. Black and white cows sold to a top of 121.5ppk from P & EM Mason of Spital Farm with plenty of meaty cows selling in the 110ppk – 120ppk bracket and an overall average of 95ppk for all black and whites forward. The last Calf and Stirk sale of the year had an entry of 50 forward this week selling to a continued strong trade with plenty of interest from buyer especially for the time of the year. British blue heifer calves sold to a top of £400 from MJ Fell of Chapel House with British Blue bulls from the same good home selling to £380. Native cattle continue to sell well with Angus bull calves selling to £345 from the Wallbank Family of Tills Farm. Two week old Simmental bulls sold to £310 from JR Newsham and Son of Sellerley Farm. Good shaped beef heifers continue to sell well with the other beef heifers slightly harder to place this week. Black and white bull calves sold to a sharper trade this week selling to a top of £110 from the Wallbank Family of Tills Farm. A selection of July and August born stirks from the Isle of Man created plenty of interest and sold to a strong trade and were eagerly bid for. July born British blue heifers sold to a top of £430 and £420. August born Simmental steers sold to £375 and heifers to £370. Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 19th December The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had a smaller entry of just shy of 500 prime lambs forward this week following the Christmas show of prime lambs last week. Lambs sold to a top price of £79 for Texel lambs from T & CM Kelsall of Brown Brook. Lambs sold to a top of 186ppk from TR Prickett of Hutton Roof Hall. Agricultural Waste Exemptions Many of these will have expired in the last few months and although we did lots of applications three years ago, we have done a few renewals. If you have renewed your own exemptions that is good, but if not please contact us and we will help.
Basic Payment Scheme 2016 Although there are still clients who have not been paid fully in 2015, the payment window for 2016 opens on the 1st December. RPA are still saying they will pay 90% of farmers by the end of December, but whether this payment will actually be correct we are not sure. If you receive any money this is wonderful and we expect payments to be 17% higher that 2015. If there is much difference please let us know and we can check to see if your 2015 payment was actually correct, as many we were not.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 15th December The weekly sale of Calves had a strong entry of calves forward once again. The sale mainly consisting of black and white bobby Calves with many vendors clearing out before Christmas, with bobby calves selling to a continued similar trade. An entry of young beef calves forward were well bid for with the trade topping at £270 from JM Barton & Son of Lupton Hall with British Blue bulls and heifers from the same home selling to £235. The opening In-lamb Breeding Sheep sale of the season saw a sticky trade. There is plenty of interest out there for in-lamb ewes but many buyers holding off into the new year when spring is looking closer and they have got through the thick of winter. In-lamb one and two crop Texel ewes sold to £98 from Mark Grunnill and broken mouthed Mule ewes scanned in lamb to the Texel tup sold to £96. In-lamb sheep required for the breeding sale on Thursday 12th January. Please contact the office with entries. The fortnightly sale of Store Lambs had an entry of just shy of 1,500 forward. A very mixed entry of store lambs, as to be expected at this time of year, saw the strong short keep store lambs continue to easily sell in excess of £60 topping at £67.50 from Ashton Agricultural with Texel lambs. Half bred lambs sold to a top of £66 for Masham lambs from BJ Bainbridge of Steps Farm with Mule lambs selling to £60.50 from GH Jones of Fold Farm. A lot of horned lambs and hill bred lambs with buyers looking for bright looking lambs with potential of going on and growing out in to strong prime lambs. It was noticeable buyers were slightly cautious with the unexpected decline in prime lamb prices. Tuesday 13th December There was 1137 Prime Lambs forward at J36 which sold to a top price of £106 or 252p/kg for a cracking 42kg Texel consigned by GCL Stephenson Ltd, Deansbiggin. The second highest price per kilo of the day selling to 230.8p/kg for 39kg Texel X Lambs from P Cumming, 5 Holmes Field, he also sold a pen of eight 46kg Texel to £95.50. Today's sale met a firm trade throughout the day, with all classes stronger on the week. Good meaty types sold away very well, with heavier lambs in demand. Any lambs not Farm assured or lacking quality were slightly easier. Suffolk lambs were selling to a top price of £90 from B Barker, Brown Edge with J Parsley of Beckside Farm achieving £83 for Bluefaced Leicesters. Hill bred lambs sold to a top price per head of £78.50 for a run of Mules consigned by P & TL Edmondson Ltd, Low Hall Farm, Masham lambs from J A Bennett, Middale Farm topped at £76.00, with TA & J Dixon, Yoad Pot peaking at £70.50 for 5 Swaledales, Cheviots consigned by T E & A Galbraith, Crooklands Farm realised £70.50, and Rough Fells from TLB & J Knowles, High Borrowbridge. 1137 Prime Lambs averaged 167.83p/kg Prime Lambs Top Prices: Tex £106 Deansbiggin, £95.50 Holme Field, £94 The Galleon, £93.50 Holme Field, £93 Daub Hall Farm. The weekly sale of Cast Sheep saw less sheep forward but sold to a stronger trade, with all ewe buyers actively looking to purchase ewes with all types of females dearer on the week. The trade topped at £96 from RS & BA Harker of Overthwaite Farm for a Leicester tup with Texel ewes selling to £95 from Holgate Caravan Park. There was a shortage of good continental ewes in today to fulfil the buyer’s requirements with all continental ewes forward averaging into the seventies. A good entry of Mule ewes in terms of quality saw them sell to a top of £79 from BJ Blee of Kendal with strong pens of Mules selling in excess of the £70 mark. A strong number of horned ewes forward saw Rough Fell ewes sell to a top of £58 from RJ & OB Simpson and also from M Bland and Sons with all Rough Fell ewes forward selling to an average of £54. Swaledale ewes sold to a top of £53 from T Potter & Son of Graining Field with all Swaledale ewes forward selling to market average in the forties.
