STORE CATTLE

Knock out trade

No shadow boxing today – straight into the championship rounds from the first pen forward. Buyers on their toes, vendors well represented and plenty of cattle properly tested under the bright lights.

The shorthorns came out swinging early landing the first big shots at £2590, twice, from Messrs CS Long & RH Knipe, solid powerful types that took some beating. Charolais bullocks just over the 20 month mark from Messrs D & E Whitaker stepped into the centre of the ring and traded strongly to £2420, while three Angus steers of a similar age from JE, D & JER Wightman went toe to toe at £2400 with bids coming from multiple corners.

The younger division didn’t dock the challenge either. Nine month old Simmental steers from Messrs RJS & DM Addison boxed clever and pushed on to £1990.

In the heifer class JE, D & JER Wightman lifted the Aberdeen Angus title belt at £2560 for two year olds, while younger Charolais heifers from the same good home made £2300 after sustained bidding.

A stand out pair of Blue heifers just 11 months old out of Simmental cows from W Heaps Ltd attracted serious ringside attention before settling at £2120. Smart breeding potential types that were well contested, proving Thursday is the day to maximise trade for all types of cattle.

This is the fortnightly sale where cattle are properly fought over and buyers prepared to go the distance for every lot.
