J36 Fell Pony Sale Saturday 28th October The Annual Show & Sale of Fell Ponies on behalf of the Fell Pony Society by North West Auctions, once again, attracted a packed ringside of prospective purchasers. Proving to be, yet again, one of the busiest sales of the year held at J36 Rural Auction Centre, with people from all across the UK in attendance, being attracted by the quality bloodlines on offer in the catalogue. Top price of the day was achieved by ‘Greenholme Jemima’, a 2-year-old Grey filly with a fantastic movement from Mrs S Mallinson of Nab House. The filly by noted sire ‘Greenholme Look At Me’, attracted lots of attention before the sale and was knocked down for the leading price of 1600gns. The 4th Prize in Class 2 (Fell Pony aged 1-3 years) a Black filly, also 2 years old from the same original home, forward from Ms H Wilson of Wath Farm followed on to achieve 1450gns. ‘Greenholme Jenna’ noted as being sired by ‘Greenholme Warrior’, with bloodlines tracing back to the ‘Lunesdale’ Stud. Closely following was ‘Firtreeroyal Duchess’ forward from Miss Olivia Swailes of Thurstane Street, a fully broken 14hh 7-year-old black mare. Sired by ‘Heltondale Star Boy III’, she was knocked down for 1400gns. In the Registered Colt or Filly Foal Class, the trade was topped by ‘Greenholme Lucas’ forward from RJ & BK Potter of the Greenholme Stud. The Grey colt was placed 6th in the pre-sale show, attracting attention from purchasers. Sired by ‘Greenholme Ringo’ he achieved 850gns. Other lots forward from the Greenholme Stud (WS Potter); ‘Greenholme Lets See’ and ‘Greenholme Lady Hawk’ sold for 820gns and 800gns respectively. The Overall Champion of the day was awarded to the Black Colt, ‘Greenholme Luigi’ also forward from RK&BJ Potter. The colt being sired by ‘Lunesdale Union Jack’ going back to ‘Lunesdale Warlord’, presented himself tremendously in the show arena. ‘Luigi’ went on to sell for 650gns. The sale was noted as being an excellent trade for all lots forward, with the sale averages as follows: Class 1 Fell Pony 4 years plus to 1400gns ave. 741gns Class 2 Fell Pony 1-3 years to 1600gns ave. 545gns Class 3 Fell Pony Colt or Filly Foal to 850gns ave. 311gns. Following on from the Fell Pony Sale, there was a handful of other Mountain & Moorland Ponies offered for Sale. The section being topped by ‘Roandale Dylan’ forward from Mr & Mrs C Parker of Hill Gill Farm. The black ¾ Dales Colt Foal sired by ‘Westwick Hamish’ went on to sell for 620gns. With a filly foal from the same home, ‘Roandale Duchess’, a Part Bred Dales x Clydesdale selling for 600gns. Shetland ponies sold to a top of 420gns for ‘Edern Ailis’ a Miniature Piebald Filly forward from Mrs B Johnstone of Mally Close Drive. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 27th October A good entry of Store Cattle forward at Lancaster with over 350 forward for the sale once again. There was a very mixed entry of store cattle forward, with good quality, nearly finished cattle continuing to sell to a premium at Lancaster, with longer term cattle harder to place but in keeping with other auction markets. Today’s sale topped at £1350 for an Aberdeen Angus Bullock from GF & EE Holt of Preston with other Angus Bullocks selling to £1280 from PJ & P Mason of Out Rawcliffe. British Blue Heifers sold to £1100 from JD & GM Bracken of Garstang and also for a pair of British Blues from M Shepherd & Son of Pilling. There was another good entry of Cast and OTM Cattle at Lancaster today, with all being eagerly bid for by a busy ring of buyers. Cows sold to a sharp trade, especially for the time of year and numbers forward, although nationally now numbers are beginning to tighten. Cast cows sold to an overall market average of 114p/kg for 122 with all black and white cows selling to a market average of 102p/kg. Topping the Cast Cow trade today was RG Robinson of Farleton selling an Aberdeen Angus Cow to 159.5p/kg with JE & AC Clarke & Son of Melling topping the price per head with a Limousin Cow selling to £1242.30. Friesian Cows sold to a top of 134.5p/kg from AT Burrow & Son of Gressingham. Cast Heifers sold to 169.5p/kg for a Friesian from GT & M Lawson & Son of Bentham and also for an Aberdeen Angus from DR & E Milner of Claughton-on-Brock. There was a few Cast Steers forward today selling to a top price of 199.5p/kg from DE & SM Moorhouse of High House Farm who also topped the Cast Bull trade at 219.5p/kg both for Limousins. Following ministry inspections vendors are reminded to ensure that cattle are fit to travel to the auction market and lame and cows with over grown feet will be turned away. A sharper trade for Stirks at Lancaster today, with a young entry of stirks, the majority being between 4 and 7 months old, sold to a good crowd of buyers and on lookers. The trade topped at £650 for British Blue bulls from G & MA Smith of Samlesbury with AA bullocks selling to £580 and £575 from the Masons of Birkland Barrow. There was more interest in heifer stirks today, where they were eagerly bid for selling to £490 for British Blue heifers, again, from G & MA Smith and Limousins to £460 from the same home. Weaned Angus bulls sold to £400 from JK & BJ Birkett of White Lund with black and whites selling to £355 from J & CW Metcalfe & Son of Hare Appletree. The weekly sale of Calves had a slightly smaller entry, black and white calves, once again, were eagerly bid and more are required to meet the demand from buyers. There was less top quality beef calves on offer today with a younger entry in the market, Angus bulls sold to £285 from Joylan Farms and Simmental Bulls from JR Newsham and Son of Sellerley Farm. Once again, good quality black and whites, between four weeks and eight weeks of age, sold in excess of £100 topping at £152 from Drinkall Bros of Catshaw Hall and David and Eileen Wallbank selling their black and whites to £148. More good quality black and whites required to fulfil requirements from buyers, beef calves always required at Lancaster. Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 30th October A larger show of Prime Lambs forward, with new companies represented around the ringside this week. A sale average of 160p/kg was achieved, a trade in line with the national average towards the end of last week. Top price of the day was achieved by JA&VM Lamb of Conder Green Farm at 189p/kg, with a top price per head coming from S Park of Highfield Farm and WN&D Smith & Sons of Cocker House Farm selling at £80.00. Hill Bred Lambs selling well today, with heavy Mule Lambs achieving over the £70 mark on several occasions. Top price in the Mule section at £74 was a pen from A Butler of Park Farm Barn, followed by S Park of Highfield Farm at £73 and JS&S Atkinson of Sykes Farm at £71. J36 Sale Reports Thursday 26th October The fortnightly sale of Calves and Stirks at Junction 36, saw a show predominately made up of Black & White Bull Calves. The few beef bred calves on offer met high demand, resulting in a sharper trade topping at £420 for a 1-month old British Blue Bull from HJ Robinson & Son of Elm Tree Farm, with others from the same home £375. Heifer Calves selling to a top of £320 also for British Blues from B Mallinson & Son of Ravens Lodge, also selling others to £315. Tuesday 31st October A slightly smaller entry of Prime Lambs sold to a strong trade, with lamb numbers less nationwide, leading to stronger demand. Beltex type lambs continue to meet plenty of demand at J36 with numerous purchasers looking for these type of lambs. Today’s sale was topped by a Beltex selling to 215.6p/kg or £97 from JG Harryman of Hawkshead with others from TS & SM Park of Millom selling a pen to 209.5p/kg and JG & PH Thompson of Selside selling a pen to 208.1p/kg. All Beltex Lambs forward today sold to an overall average of 194.75p/kg. Texel Lambs sold to 208.5p/kg from TR Prickett of Hutton Roof with others from the same home selling to 196.7p/kg. Suffolks topped at £90 from RHM & S Boyren of Colton with a pen of 30 Suffolk Lambs from F & SA Edmondson of Ulverston selling to 182.3p/kg or £87.50.

Well fleshed and meaty Continental and Mule ewes sold to a noticeable sharper trade than seen over the previous weeks.
