NWA J36 - Rough Diamonds, Bluefaced Leicester Females, Multi—Breed Females & Flock Reduction Sale - Saturday 28th January The annual In-Lamb sheep sale at J36 Rural Auction Centre had the largest entry to date with a busy ring of buyers and spectators throughout the day which saw a brilliant atmosphere throughout with a strong trade to match. North West Auctions was proud to host the annual Rough Diamonds show and sale of individual Rough Fell females. The pre-sale show was expertly judged by Mr Ian Mallinson of Selside with the sale kindly sponsored by Alligator Mobile Sheep Handling. A strong line up of sheep was present which saw the championship rosette awarded to Sarah Hoggarth of Birkhaw Farm, lot 64 a two-crop ewe. The ewe was sired by RF2252, Poppy Unmistakeable, and she was scanned in-lamb with twins to RF2748 Cautgill Yelp, she later sold to 350gns to Stephen and Wendy Dickinson of Tebay. The reserve champion was awarded to TLB & J Knowles of High Borrowbridge with lot 58 a Gimmer Shearling scanned in-lamb with twins to RF3030 Flakebridge Ziggy. The gimmer shearling, sired by RF2312 Brownber Unimog, sold to 400gns joining the growing flock of Paula Allen of St Annes Farm. The sale also included the flock dispersal of Rough Fell breeding sheep on behalf of NC & S Dodd of Tebay which saw Rough Fell gimmer shearlings selling to £145 and aged Rough Fell ewes, in-lamb to the Leicester, selling to £79. The annual show and sale of individual Bluefaced Leicesters Females had the largest entry to date, attracting both regular and new vendors. The pre-sale show was expertly judged by Mr Jack Cartmel of Cockermouth. Two strong classes of Leicester sheep were presented before the judge, which saw the Championship Rosette awarded to J & W Bell of Highfield with lot 122 a Gimmer Hogg sired by D17 Hewgill. The reserve champion was awarded to J Wight & Sons of Midlock Farm, lot 129 an in-lamb Gimmer Shearling sired by F27 Midlock “Mustang”. A strong trade was seen throughout the sale for Leicesters which saw the trade top at 1,900gns for the reserve champion from J Wight & Sons of Midlock Farm, lot 129 selling to M & G German of Kirkby Lonsdale. Gimmer Hoggs sold, twice, to 1,000gns firstly the champion from J & W Bell of Highfield and then a H1 Kirkby Redgate daughter from J Wight & Son, Midlock Farm. Bluefaced Leicester Gimmer Hoggs sold to an average of £882 and in-lamb Gimmer Shearlings averaging £522. In addition to the Rough Fell and Bluefaced Leicester show and sale we saw the largest entry of Multi-breed sheep to date as well. All types of sheep were eagerly bid for and sold to a strong trade. Texels sold to a top of 450gns from PK & R Woof of Storth End Farm for a 2013 ewe sired by Sportsmans Tremendous II, scanned in-lamb with twins to UNO with plenty of in-lamb Texels selling between 300gns and 350gns. A strong Zwartble trade was enjoyed with a Zwartble Gimmer Shearlings selling to 220gns from BA Hogg of Melbourne House. The multi-breed sale was followed by the major flock reduction on behalf of TH Gibson and Son, Toadpool Farm, Kendal of outstanding Mule ewes. The sheep were a credit to the family and the quality of sheep that the family have bought over the years. A lot of Interest in the sheep from throughout the North West saw the best pen of one and two crop Mule ewes sell to £210 and another two pens selling to £205. A buoyant trade throughout saw one and two crop ewes selling between £165 and £195 with two crop upward ewes selling to a top of £170. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 27th January The monthly sale of Stirks to include the weekly sale of calves had a catalogue entry of over 70 entered. Steer stirks were certainly in strong demand and eagerly bid for with Hereford steers from E Lund and Son of Lundholme. Five and six month old Angus steers from DC Miller of Cobble Hey sold to £505 and £515. British Blue bulls sold to £590 from AW & AM Park and Sons of Walker I’TH Fields. Black and white stirks in strong demand especially in the region of six month old selling to £335 from J & DE Mitchell and Son of Snapewood Farm. A smaller entry of Calves this week with it being the stirk sale saw calves sell to a continued strong trade with plenty of dealer and farm buyers in the ring looking to purchase all types of calves. A plainer show of Cast Cows forward this week with the trade being very similar to the last few weeks. Topping the cast cow trade today was a Friesian selling to £1059.13 From the Drinkall Bro’s, Catshaw Hall Farm. The top price per Kilo today went to 480kg Friesian Cow selling at 139.50p/kg from JR Pye, Hatters Farm. Heifers sold to a top of 149.50p/kg for a Friesian Heifer from J & G Thornley Ltd., Derby Lodge Farm, Preston. Bullocks sold to 149.50p/kg from J Birkett & Son, Fanny House Farm for a Friesian. All Classes of Store Cattle were sharper on the week for a plainer show of cattle forward this week at Lancaster. 262 cattle went through the ring to a usual ring side of buyers, topping the market this week was an Angus Bullock reaching £1300 from AJ & D Knowles Windy Hill Farm New Hutton. Heifers topped at £1240 for a British Blue from JC Prickett. Friesian bullocks saw a high today of £1100 from MG & J Parker Lodge Farm. An overall market average today for store cattle came to £968. Monday 30th January There was a smaller entry of Prime Hoggs forward this week but selling to a dearer trade, with all buyers certainly keener to buy all specifications of hoggs. An overall market average of just over 160p/kg saw all vendors leaving pleased with their trade. The trade topped twice at £88 with Texel from H Chapman and Son of Millbeck with hoggs from Fred and Mary Woodhouse of Fell End selling to the same price. Plenty of pens of Continental hoggs mid forty kilos in weight, selling in the mid to late seventies. Mule hoggs sold to a top of £71 from Fred and Mary Woodhouse of Fell End with Mule hoggs selling a few pounds dearer then previous week. A few more horned lambs in the market today saw Swaledale hoggs sell to a top of £66.50 from KM & KJ Curwen of Marshaw Farm. More hoggs required week on week to fulfil buyer’s requirements. An entry mainly consisting of Black and White Bull calves topping at £95 from ML & SM Dodson, Espford with others at £70 from J & O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor Farm. The fortnightly sale of Store Hoggs saw a reduced entry of 689 forward which is expected this time of year. There was a good selection of Hoggs put before buyers with the trade topping at £70.50 for a pen of Charollais from T Sharp, Gateside Farm. This was closely followed by a pen of Texels from JT Procter of Flookburgh selling to £70. Suffolk Hoggs sold well topping at £62.50 for a pen of five from T & M Halhead, Upp Hall with all Suffolks forward averaging £51. A nice run of Beltex Hoggs from DR & C Galbraith, Sunny Bank sold to £57.50 followed by a pen from T Ellis, Woodside selling to £56.50. Hill bred Hoggs saw a top price of £55.50 achieved for a pen of Cheviots from LA & M Lambert, Brow Head with Mules selling to £48 from R & JM Harper. Tuesday 31st January A smaller entry of Prime Hoggs forward today at J36 saw P Cummings of Holme Field hitting the high spot with a cracking pen of 46kg Beltex X Hoggs, which realised £100 or 217.4p/kg, his following pens were 5 Beltex x Texel Hoggs, weighing 40kg selling to 225p/kg and seven 42kg Texel X Hoggs selling to 214.3p/kg. TS & SM Park, Millom Castle had a super run of Texel which saw his top pen peak at £99 for 47kg followed by his 40kg hoggs at £90. Handy weight Beltex Hoggs from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof Hall sold for £97.50 or 237.8p/kg. Suffolk hoggs consigned by H Halhead & Son, Lawsons Farm sold to £93.00 and a pair of Charollais, scaling 49kgs realised £82.50. Hill breeds sold for £95 for a 76kg Cheviot from Forest Hall Farm, Mule hoggs from Fishwick Bros, Middle Sadghyll, sold away to £78.50 for 52kg, with Mashams weighing 45kg from B J Bainbridge, Steps Farm, realising £73. In the horned section, the Williamson Brothers, Greenhills Farm had Blackface Hoggs scaling 40kg and 41kg selling to £69.50 and £70.50 respectively. Rough Fell sold away to £65 for 41kg from BJ Bainbridge, Steps Farm and a pen of 9 Swaledales consigned by TA & J Dixon, Toad Pot, scaled 43kg and realised £64. There was a larger entry of Cast Sheep forward this week which sold to a stronger trade than seen the previous week with a large demand from seven active buyers around the ring looking to purchase. Strong continental ewes sold in the nineties topping at £99 from JC Dunning of Low Chapel Farm. Rough Fell cast rams sold to a top of £89 of BJ Bainbridge of Steps Farm with Mule ewes selling to a top of £76 from EJ Hodgson of Lambrigg Head and strong Mule ewes regularly around the £70 mark. Fit Herdwick wether shearlings sold to a top of £71 from JM Galbraith of Natland with Swaledales selling to £59 from GJ Ibbettson of Higher Salter with strong Swaledale tups sold in excess of £60. Temporary Holding Numbers and links The new initiative from DEFRA is causing a lot of confusion and headaches, particularly at BCMS links are no longer being renewed. If you need any help please call and see Kathryn or Rodney.
Agricultural Waste Exemptions Many of these will have expired in the last few months and although we did lots of applications three years ago, we have done a few renewals. If you have renewed your own exemptions that is good, but if not please contact us and we will help.
Basic Payment Scheme 2016 Although there are still clients who have not been paid fully in 2015, the payment window for 2016 opens on the 1st December. RPA are still saying they will pay 90% of farmers by the end of December, but whether this payment will actually be correct we are not sure. If you receive any money this is wonderful and we expect payments to be 17% higher that 2015. If there is much difference please let us know and we can check to see if your 2015 payment was actually correct, as many we were not.
