NWA Lancaster Monthly Dairy Sale - Monday 16th January North West Auctions Lancaster had a cracking entry of 54 Pedigree and Commercial Dairy Cattle for their January Show and Sale on Monday 16th January. The show and sale was kindly sponsored by Wynnstay and Northern Nutrition, whom we would like to thank for their continued support, which makes this event so successful. The judging this morning was in the capable hands of Mr Austin Knowles, Malvern we greatly appreciate him giving us his time and expertise. He awarded the Championship Rosette to lot 22, the first prize halter led Heifer, Ingleview Jareb Anna, consigned by R & E Butterfield, Bentham. The heifer was noted as having 9 generations of VG/EX behind her, with the five nearest dams being classified as excellent. Anna was 15 days claved and giving 32kg daily and later in the sale ring was knocked down for £2020. The Reserve Champion Heifer went to lot 43, Sandcrest Queen, consigned by J & M Sanderson, Wesham noted as 29 days calved and currently producing 30kg daily, she went on to realise £1900. The top price of the sale went to Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack, for their Heifer, Witherslack Moviestar Barbara. She calved 21 days ago and is giving 33kg and realised £2150. J T & B Fox, Quernmore, had the 1st prize Cow, with Blackwood Clinker 29, to be 12 days calved and is giving 32kg daily, then sold away to £1450. The best pair of heifers went to lots 10 and 11, which were consigned by J Burrow & son, Barton. Lot 10, Stardale Goodwhone Vaakje, 20 days calved and is giving 30kg daily, she has 6 generations of VG/EX behind her, went on to sell for £2150. Lot 11, Stardale Varney Meg, who calved on the 17th December, and is also giving 30kg daily. The next 4 generation dams all EX, Meg sold for £1820. There was a very useful selection of bulls on offer today. Mr Knowles placed as his Champion Male to lot 63, Kirkwood Ronnie, consigned by H & SD Cornthwaite, Kirkwood Lodge Farm, Kirkland. He has 8 generations of VG/EX of pedigree behind him. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 13th January This week saw a larger entry of 278 Store Cattle going under the gavel at Lancaster this morning. All classes of cattle met a sharper trade on the previous week, with more cattle required to meet our customers demand. Topping the trade was a Limousin bullock at £1450 from a regular vendor DE & SM Moorhouse, High House Farm, Natland, who also had bullocks exceeding the £1300 mark. Topping the heifer trade was a Friesian from JS&KM Wilson & Son, High House, at £1340. Friesian bullocks also sold well with demand topping at £1170 form L Parsons & sons, Low Levens with a number of lots breaking the £1000 barrier. A larger entry of Cast Cattle was seen this week at Lancaster with 136 forward, a good show of all classes of cows today with plenty of meat about which resulted in a noticeable sharper trade in the ring. Topping the trade was Limousin cow from M & L Preece, High house farm, Kirby Lonsdale at 171.5p/kg. There was a well-supported ringside of buyers for this morning’s sale of Calves and Stirks. With nice quality continental types meeting a firm demand, while in the Black and White section, good stronger types were wanted while the smaller younger ones met recent rates. Topping the sale today was FW Rhodes & Son, Barrow Greaves Farm, with a cracking British Blue Bull Calf which realised £335. Continental Bull Calves peaked at £265 for a Limousin consigned by JR Pye, Hatters Farm. Native Calves sold away to £270 for a Hereford Bull calf from FW Rhodes, Barrow Greaves Farm, and a Aberdeen Angus bull calf realised £190 from Messrs Wallbank Farms Ltd, Tills Farm. In the Friesian section bull calves sold to £135 consigned by CR & A Baxter & Son, New Brows Farm. JR Pye, Hatters Farm sold his Montbeliarde bull calves for £120. Heifer Calves made a top price of £290 for a British Blue which was consigned by Wallbank Farms Ltd. Native Bred Calves sold to £185 for a Welsh Black from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cocker House Farm and £66 for an Aberdeen Angus heifer from TM Townley, Knowsley Farm. A consignment of Stirks from PS & H Eckersley, Higher Brundhurst Farm, sold away to a top price of £390 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus Steers. Monday 16th January Just short of 600 Prime Hoggs forward this morning at Lancaster went under the gavel at Lancaster with a strong entry of heavy lambs forward with not much demand with handy weights and smarter types easier to sell on the day. Topping the trade today was a single Beltex Hogg selling to 193p/kg or £81 from JA & VM Lamb, Conder Green Farm with an overall average of 152p/kg. Good numbers of Swale and Mule forward which sold relatively well with all buyers eagerly bidding. An entry of 38 Cast Ewes saw top price of the day go to a Texel Ewe from B & J Preston, Ellers Farm selling to £98, this was closely followed by a Mule Ewe which sold to £88 from WTC Farms Ltd, Old Grange Farm. JR Handley also had the top price British Blue Bull calf realising £165, with his Friesian bulls to £58. Barker Farm's Friesian bull calves sold away to £52. The monthly sale of in-lamb sheep Breeding Sheep saw AK Robinson, Drovers Pass, top the breeding sale today with a pen of 2 Crop Mules, scanned with twins, due to lamb 20th March onwards, sell for £135, his next pen selling to £128. Selling next was JR Park, Black Syke, with pen of Correct Herdwicks, which have been running with the Bluefaced Leicester ram, due to lamb 15th April and realised £31 The fornightly sale of Store Hoggs saw PM & ST Entwistle, Lentworth Farm top the trade for a pen of five Texels, which realised £69.50. A pen of 21 Texel crosses from DR & C Galbraith, Sunny Bank sold to £68.00, as did G GU & D Swarbrick, Kate Farm for his Texel crosses. A pair of Charollais from TA Teasdale, Head House, realised £68, with his Suffolk's making £67.50. Beltex Hoggs from C Head, Killington Drive realised £65. PM & ST Entwistle, Lentworth Farm had a pen of Mules at £60 and Cheviot Hoggs from G GU & D Swarbrick, Kate Farm realised £55.50, Mashams peaked at £54 from W & J Penny, Masrh Farm. Tuesday 17th January Topping the Prime Hogg trade today was a superb 46kg Texel, consigned by DJE & A Freeman, Town End Farm which sold for £96. TR Prickett, Hutton Roof had a very smart pen of 11 Texels, weighing 41kg and selling for £78 or 190.2p/kg. Beltex Hoggs peaked at £84 or 186.5p/kg for a cracking Hogg, scaling 45kg from J G & P H Thompson, Poppy Farm. A pen of lightweight Continentals from LA & M Lambert, Brow Head, weighing 34kg, made 188p/kg. Suffolks today sold away to £85 from JA & LR Wilson, Dunningwell Farm. Hill bred Hoggs peaked at £75.50 for a pen of Mules, consigned by J & AJ Coates & Sons, Braida Garth, Cheviots sold away to £71.50 from TE & A Galbraith, Crooklands Farm, a pair of Herdwicks from K Wrathall Ltd, Cockley Beck Farm, sold to £67 and Swaledales realised £62.50 for a pen of 17 from Fishwick Bros, Middle Sadghyll. Once again, a smaller show of Cast Sheep forward this week with just 234 which was expected with the time of year. There was a good selection of all classes of ewes forward again meeting a sharper trade on the previous week, topping the market this afternoon was a pair of Bluefaced Leicester rams at £125 from RE Clegg & Miss LD Bennett, Tounge House closely followed by a single Beltex ewe scaling £100 from ME Wannop & sons LTD, Heaton Hall Farm. Strong continental ewes sold to £98 down to the early £70 mark and all Mule ewes forward averaged £62 with Mashams averaging £66. Although there are still clients who have not been paid fully in 2015, the payment window for 2016 opens on the 1st December. RPA are still saying they will pay 90% of farmers by the end of December, but whether this payment will actually be correct we are not sure. If you receive any money this is wonderful and we expect payments to be 17% higher that 2015. If there is much difference please let us know and we can check to see if your 2015 payment was actually correct, as many we were not.
