Renowned January Dairy Extravaganza Lancaster Auction Mart - Monday 15th January Six Dairy Cattle Sell over £2000 at Lancaster Auction Mart The renowned January dairy sale at Lancaster saw a bumper catalogued entry of over 60. There was plenty of interest in the sale which attracted buyers from throughout the north of England and Midland counties as well. There was a fantastic atmosphere throughout the sale, with a real buzz around the ring. The pre-sale show was capably judged by Mr Andrew Wilson of the Northshields Holstein herd, Fife. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Wilson for his time and expertise in travelling down to judge. There was an impressive line-up of heifers and bulls for him to cast his eye over, thanks must go to the vendors for the quality on offer. The champion was awarded to lot 30, Witherslack Mincio Joanne 2, a second calved cow yielding 46kg which went on to sell for £2,150, going home with the judge, she was consigned by the Inman Family of Strickland Hill. The reserve champion was awarded to H Wright and Son of Berryholme, Kendal with their heifer Berryholme Snowy Linda. This smart heifer sold for £2,100. The sale day trade was topped by DJ & S Tomlinson of Bilsborrow Hall Farm, Preston with Bilsrow Jareb Lausine selling to £2,180, with Bilsbrow Presley Roxy 2, from the same good home, selling to £2,050. There was buoyant trade throughout the sale especially considering the recent drop in milk price and the current fodder situation. An overall market average of £1,627 for all in-milk dairy cattle forward was achieved. The special show and sale of Holstein Breeding Bulls created plenty of interest with some potential buyers leaving empty handed. The Champion rosette was awarded to lot 65, Ingleview Perseus from R & E Butterfield, Bentham. The bull trade was topped by Stardale Solomon from J Burrow & Son, Barton which sold to £2050. This was closely followed by Enchanted Merlin selling to £2,000 from Enchanted Holsteins of Great Eccleston. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 12th January A larger catalogued entry of 343 Store Cattle were forward this week. A mixed show saw meaty and good conformation cattle good to sell, with ones out of specification harder to place. Selling to a top of £1360 was a pen of Charolais Bullocks from H Chapman & Son of Middleton. Native Bred Cattle saw Aberdeen Angus Bullocks sold to £1280 from GE Turner of Inglewhite and also Hereford Bullocks sell to the same price from JB Moore of Allithwaite. Aberdeen Angus Heifers from J & M Cockett of Ingleton sold to £1200. Black and White Bullocks sold to £1160 from JB Moore of Allithwaite. There was an entry of 99 OTM Cattle forward this morning with all selling to a good trade. An overall average of 114p/kg was achieved. Topping the Cast Cow market today was EE Thornton & Sons of Heaton selling a British Friesian to 164.5p/kg or GR Bargh & Co of Caton selling a Charolais Cow to £1376.55. There was a good entry of 60 Calves and stirks in the market at Lancaster. The calf trade saw a buoyant trade for Continental beef heifers and bull calves. Native bred bulls were good to sell with heifers harder place this is in line with store cattle and the drop in premium on native heifers as well. The trade topped for some cracking weanling Angus bull calves out of Montbeliardes from JK & B Birkett and Son of White Lund selling to £440 and £435. British Blue bull calves on milk sold to £370 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons of Brown Brook with Angus bull calves to £360 from D & K Haworth of Rose Farm. Limousin bull calves topped at £345 from JM & MH France and Son of Newhouse Farm. Fleckvieh weanlings sold to a top of £320 from JK & B Birkett and Son with a Montbeliarde from same home to £275. There was more interest in black and whites today with weaned bull calves selling to a top of £260 from H Halhead and Son of Lawsons Farm. Rearing calves on milk topped at £120 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons of Brown Brook, and others to £100 from Drinkall Bros of Catshaw Hall farm. It was great to have some more stirks on offer. This week saw named sired Angus bullocks sell to £570 at 7 months old from PS & H Eckersley of Mellor with Montbeliarde bullocks from same home selling to £500 at the same age. Monday 15th January There was a buoyant trade for all specifications of Prime Hoggs at Lancaster which saw a market average 184p/kg and an SQQ average of 187p/kg achieved. More hoggs could have easily been sold and to the advantage of the vendor. We urge vendors to take advantage of the good trades Lancaster is enjoying at the moment. The trade topped at £95 for a pen of 10 heavy weight Texels from PD Anderton of Wyre Farm, closely followed by Texels from Andrew Butler of Park Farm Barn selling to £94. Suffolk hoggs topped at £92 from RD & L Cornthwaite of Humblescough Farm. Plenty of heavy weight hoggs sold around £90. Export type hoggs were regularly selling around the 200p/kg mark today with those types of hoggs short in supply. Mule hoggs sold to a top £84 from Andrew Butler for 46kg hoggs, with 41kg Mules often selling between £77.50 and £79.50. It was great to have a couple of fresh store cattle buyers present for the sale today. Bullocks sold to a top of £960 for Limousin bullocks from J&J Postlethwaite of Bramaskew. Heifers looked a strong trade in comparison with April/May Spring born heifers selling to £730 from B & HM Wilson of Ashsteads. There was large entry of over 50 Beef Breeding Cattle forward in the market today. There was plenty of interest in the cattle but, many buyers cautious with the current forage situation and not wanting to commit to more cattle at this stage. British Blue heifers due to the Limousin bull in April topped the trade twice at £1200 from MJ Waller of Carlingwha. A consignment of Luing in calf cows from SJ & J Hodgson & Son of Tottlebank sold to £1120 twice. Tuesday 16th January An entry of 1400 Prime Hoggs forward for sale this week at Junction 36, with well finished lambs being particularly sought by buyers. An overall average of 183.6p/kg reflected a mixed entry of hoggs, with a large entry of Mule hoggs forward for sale. Best Beltex bred hoggs still in demand, with the sale being topped at £103 or 239.5p/kg for well-bred hoggs from GR&A Foy & Son of Parkside Farm. Messrs Foy’s total consignment of hoggs averaged 216.19p/kg. Medium weight lambs seeing an overall average of 189.12p/kg. George Harryman of The Galleon again this week selling heavy well bred hoggs to top the section at £98 and £95 or 192.2p/kg. The large entry of Hill Bred Hoggs in the market today sold well for well fleshed lots. Cheviots selling to £74.50 from AR&CA Fawcett of Silverhow Farm and £73 from M&C Booth Ltd of Hartrigg.
