North West Suffolk Breeders Club Annual Show Saturday 28th May On Saturday 28th May the North West Suffolk Breeders Club held their annual show at our Lancaster Auction Market. There was a fabulous turnout of some great sheep with up to 19 in a class. The aged and shearling tup class was won by Keith Denby with a homebred shearling tup named Carnforth Patriot by Tomcroft TSB and he also went on to win Best Male, Champion and was part of the 1st prize group of 3.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 10th June Well fleshed Store Cattle and good quality sold to a good trade at Lancaster. Best quality steers selling in excess of £1,300 topping at £1,330 for a British Blue steer from EJ Ward & Sons of Intack Farm with a couple of Limousin steers from David Moorhouse of Natland selling to £1,310. Native bred cattle always required at Lancaster with Angus steers selling to £1,250 from J Hesketh of Hutton and £1,240 from JE Holt of Grindlestone House. Heifers nearing finishing sold in excess on £1,100 topping at £1,120 for Charolais heifers from L Parsons & Son of Low Levens and Limousin Heifers from W & J Parkinson of Cross House Farm. Yearling cattle continue to be in demand and sell well at Lancaster with Limousin Steers from JA & KJ Allen of St Annes Farm. Once again another good number of Cast Cows forward with over 80 being sold this week. A good entry of continentals but a plainer show of milk cows. Best types of beef cows easily selling in excess of 150ppk topping at 179.5 for a British Blue from WS Burrows & Son of Gilbralter Farm. Best types of heavy weight continental cows selling in excess of £1,200 topping at £1,276 for an 800kg cow from Nether Hall Farms. A few stock bulls about saw beef bulls sell to 137.5ppk or £1,210 for Limousin and Simmental bulls from S Blades of Hill Top and WR & C Nelson of Waltons Farm. Black and Whites sold to 119.5ppk and averaged just over 100ppk topping at £958 from D & E Monk of Bannister. An overall market average of 113ppk for all cattle sold. Calves coming forward in better numbers now, with 41 in today. Strong calves sold to recent highs, with 12week Angus Bulls to £395 from Wallbank Farms and Blue Bulls 8-10week to £380 twice, from CR & A Baxter and Wallbank Farms and Simmental Bulls to £375 from JR Newsham & Son. Monday 13th June A very satisfying Spring Lamb trade today in Lancaster with vendors leaving pleased. A market average of 198ppk was achieved, with continental lambs in excess of 200 pence regularly and better types selling easily in excess of 210ppk. Trade topped at 228ppk from Joe Townley of Mearsbeck, realising £91. George Sanderson of Kirkham topped the market with a gross price of £96 for a nice pen of Texels. Suffolk lambs sold to 216ppk or £86.50 from TE & M Kidd of Booth Hall with better types of Suffolk’s around 200ppk and averaged 195ppk. Light weight lambs wanted and sold around the 200ppk mark regularly. Just a handful of Prime Hoggs about today but still good to sell. Heavy weight Texel hoggs topping at £80 from M Carr from Out Rawcliffe, with handy weight hoggs from the same home selling to 181ppk. An overall average of 163ppk. A better trade than expected for Cast Sheep with all classes selling to a strong trade. Topping the sale was RD Lambert with 2 Continental ewes realising £103/head, closely followed by Joe Townley of Caton with a nice Texel ewe at £102. Mules sold to £79 from EJ Burrow, Hazelslack Tower, best mules in the seventies with fatter and plainer sorts in the mid to late sixties. A very pleasing average of £72 for all forward. J36 Sale Reports Thursday 9th June The weekly sale of Calves and Stirks had a stronger entry of over 70 calves forward this week. A strong trade for all black and whites, young beef calves easily sold more required to meet the strong demand with weanling beef calves a slightly easier trade compared with the high prices being made at J36 over the previous weeks but still a good trade considering current store cattle and prime cattle prices. Beef calves topped at £395 from R Morris Eyton & Son of Beckside for a British Blue Bull with one month old Blue bulls selling to £370 from WR Clarke & Partners of Cinderbarrow. Heifer calves sold to £355 and £350 from G Wilson of Appleby with British Blue. Weanling Black and Whites to £205 and £190 from G Wilson of Appleby with Calves topping at £150 from R Morris Eyton & Son of Beckside with all black and whites forward averaging £71 to include a large proportion of calves under one month old. Tuesday 7th June The weekly sale of Sheep with Lambs at foot saw a smaller entry as the season comes to an end and many consignors finishing their runs of sheep. WS Potter & Son of Stoney Gill sold ewes with twin lambs to £140 twice and £135. The national average of Prime Lambs has been on a slide since yesterday morning and continued with the downward trend as the day has gone on. Many meat companies expressing very little interest in spring lambs. Best quality Butchers lambs sold in excess 200ppk. They topped at 225ppk from TL & S Cross of Trees Farm for a couple of smart Beltex lambs selling to £97. Top gross of the day of £105 from James Robinson of Kaker Mill Texels with a pair of 53kg Texels. The monthly sale of Pigs saw an entry of 108 prime, store and weaners. Prime pigs sold to a fast trade throughout, plenty of pens up and over £100, with the best in advance of £130, topping at £158 for a pair of Saddleback Gilts from M Hill. An average of 107ppk for all prime pigs. Store pigs and weaners a bit harder to place in comparison to last month, with stores to £68 from S Riddell, Ulverston.
