J36 Rural Auction Centre Beef Breeding Sale Thursday 8th June The Great Annual Sale of Beef Breeding Cattle at J36 had an entry of over 75 families forward, attracting buyers from throughout the North of England and Scotland, guaranteeing a strong trade from start to finish. The annual consignment of dairy bred Limousin heifers with Limousin calves at foot from EJ Hodgson & Son of Lambrigg Head, Kendal, saw heifers suckling bull calves sell to £2050. Caley & Mitchinson of Troutbeck sold second calved Limousin cows to £2000. The annual consignment from Colin Wilson of Witherslack saw British Blue heifers with Limousin Bull calves at foot selling to £1880 and heifer calves at foot to £1800. KM&KJ Curwen of Abbeystead sold their consignment of Continental cows with calves to £1835 and £1705. There was plenty of interest for In-Calf Heifers with British Blues from T,L,B&J Knowles of Selside, due in July to a Limousin Bull sell to £1650, twice. The herd reduction on behalf of Mr Derek Smith of Fell House following the loss of summer grazing attracted plenty of interest. Mainly consisting of older Saler cows with Charolais calves at foot, saw the trade peak at £1550 for an 8 year old cow with a strong bull calf at foot. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 9th June The Strong Trade Continues for Stores at Lancaster A larger entry of Store Cattle forward for this week’s sale, selling to the continued strong trade with an active ring of buyers looking to purchase all specifications of cattle. Once again, numerous cattle were selling in excess of £1400, topping at £1470 for Charolais Bullocks from JA & LR Wilson of Millom with Continental bullocks from the same good home selling to £1440. Native Cattle saw Angus Bullocks sell to £1440 from GR & A Foy of Conder Green. Strong Bullocks continue to sell easily in excess of £1300. Topping the Heifer market today was H & C Pickervance of Kirkham selling British Blues to £1330. Aberdeen Angus Heifers achieved £1300 from JD & GM Bracken of Catterall. Black and White Bullocks sold to a top of £1270 from TJ Robinson of Milnthorpe with strong well fleshed bullocks selling easily over £1000 and larger grazing types selling between £800 and £950. There is still plenty of purchasers in the market looking for grazing cattle for the summer as grass still continues to grow well with vendors strongly urged to take advantage of this good trade. There was more Cast Cows on offer this week with 119 in the market achieving an overall market average of 130.15p/kg with black and white cows selling to a market average of 122p/kg. Best black and whites topped at 144.5p/kg from DJ, A & L Sutcliffe of Throstle Nest with numerous good cows selling at 139.5p/kg. Black and whites sold to £1,150.88 from G & ME Woodhouse & Son of Boldens Farm with nine black and white cows selling in excess of £1,000. Top price of the day was a Limousin bull from Peter Cummings of Holme selling to £1,471.73 or 139.5p/kg. Beef cows sold to 189.5p/kg from D & E Whitaker of Quernmore or £1,312 from JE Bracken of St Michaels. There were more Calves on offer this week and more could have easily been sold to the advantage of the vendor with plenty of people in the market looking to purchase. Vendors are certainly urged and encouraged to take advantage of the strong market prices with trade out doing collection centres. No headline calves in the market with a younger show on offer saw beef calves of all descriptions easily sold and a long way short of supply. The day’s trade toped at £370 for a six week old Angus Bull calf from Steve Mason of Birkland Barrow. The weekly consignment of calves from Eddie and Angie Newsham of Conder Green always create plenty of interest with one month old British Blue bulls selling to £340, once again, plenty of beef calves selling in and around the £300 mark. A very young entry of black and whites in the market today where all were eagerly bid for and more could have been sold, trade topped at £112 and £105 for month old calves from Drinkall Brothers of Over Wyresdale. Monday 12th June Spring Lamb Numbers Still on the Increase at Lancaster The weekly sale of Spring Lambs had the largest entry of the season, so far, with 816 forward selling to the continued strong trade. An overall market average of 234p/kg was achieved, in keeping with the national averages at the end of the previous week, especially with more lambs coming available on the market. Best types of lambs are still easily selling in excess of the £100 mark with the trade topping at £109 for a pen of Texel lambs from JE & J Pye & Son of Quernmore. Beltex Lambs from AG Butler of Hambleton and PD Anderton of Scorton sold to £108. Top pence per kilo went to AG Butler of Hambleton selling to 263p/kg and S Wilson & Son of Scotforth selling to 261p/kg. Lancaster Sale Reports The Cast Sheep trade remains good with all eagerly bid for. A Texel tup from JM & GM Livesey of Inskip sold to a top price of £131. Strongest cast ewes were selling in the nineties topping at £96 from DM Bargh of Heaton with Oxcliffe closely followed by a pen of Texels from AE Clarkson Ltd of Thurnham. Strong Mule ewes were regularly selling around the £70 mark with pens from DM Eames of Abbeystead selling to £70 and T & ME Longton and Son of Quernmore. J36 Sale Reports Thursday 8th June A bumper entry of Calves & Stirks forward today sold to the continued strong trade with an increased ringside of buyers present old and new. Numerous Beef calves sold around the £400 mark, with British Blue bulls selling to £405 and £400 from Whitestone Farms of Penrith. A consignment of strong Beef calves from V&EJ Chadwick & Sons of Preston saw Angus heifers and bulls both sell to £400, with plenty of calves selling between £350 and £400, with all vendors leaving well pleased. It was nice to have a couple of Belted Galloway calves in today, selling to a belting trade making £290 and £280. More Beef calves required to fulfil buyers requirements. A big entry of Black & Whites were eagerly bid for throughout the sale, with best types over £100, selling to £145 from J Scott & Co of Cartmel. Just a handful of Stirks in the market today from JM Simpson of Underbarrow selling Friesian bulls at 8mo to £570 and Angus bulls at the same age sell to £580. There was a shortage of numbers Cast Cows forward this week but the trade remained very strong, with an overall market average of 118.05p/kg and Black and Whites selling to a market average of 107p/kg. The market was topped by P&TL Edmondson of Kirkby in Furness for a Limousin cow selling for 169.5p/kg or £1105.14 with all Limousin cows forward averaging 148.1p/kg. More Store Cattle could have been easily sold today, with a brisk trade throughout. Yearling Limousin bulls sold to £1000 from Messrs Hodgson of High Borrans. A good number of yearling steers forward were regularly selling between £850 and £900, with Limousin yearling heifers selling to £760. Tuesday 13th June There was the largest entry of Spring Lambs this season so far with 1095 going under the gavel. As seen nationwide lambs prices have slipped with Junction 36 averaging 234p/kg beating many local centres on the day. Once again, top quality lambs were easily sold and more could have been sold and to the advantage of the vendor. Topping the trade was JA & VM Lamb of Conder Green selling Beltex lambs to 283p/kg or £116. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £114 from D Metcalfe of Dalton in Furness and Suffolk Mules sold to £110 from R & J Dodgson of Natland. Texels topped at £111 from KR & CR Williamson of Beckfoot. A large entry of lightweight lambs between 30-37kg saw 37kg lambs from IL Dixon of Cantsfield selling to a top of £100. Lightweight lambs between 32-37kg sold to a market average of 232p/kg with exactly 500 forward within this weight category. The monthly sale of all types of Pigs had an entry of 75 forward. There was a mixed entry of Prime Pigs forward with not as many top quality pigs on offer this week as sometimes seen. Heavy weight gilts sold to a top of £130 from AP Smith of Brookhouse with Boars selling to £128 from TS Wilson of Cockermouth. Pigs sold to a top of 146p/kg from J Cookson of Kendal.
