J36 Texel Dispersal Monday 10th June A very large crowd was present at North West Auctions J36 for the first part dispersal sales of the Honeyhill and Forth House flocks on behalf of the Williams and Jaeban families. Trade was very buoyant with superb quality lambs and youthful ewes particularly well sought after. Leading the way at 1300gns from Honeyhill was a 2017 Milnbank Vorderman daughter out of a Loosebeare Star Striker ewe with a single tup lamb by Stonebridge Bare Boy selling to multiple buyer Ben Marsden Farms, Penistone, Sheffield. Taking the next two top prices was Ibrhiem and Sandra Jaeban who sold two at 1100gns. Firstly a 2017 born Forth House Viva daughter out of a Knock Papoose Ewe and suckling a ewe lamb by the 70,000gns Teiglum Younggun. Successful bidder in this choice lot was Messrs RN Kirby & Son, Northallerton. At the same money, Messrs S & A Reed, Bishop Auckland purchased a Forth House Winchester daughter with twin Teiglum Younggun lambs at foot. A trio of 900gn bids followed with Messrs Williams selling a much admired Duncryne bred 2013 Baltier Thunderbird daughter, suckling an outstanding Stonebridge Bare Boy ewe lamb. Successful purchaser of this lot was AR & BJ Thompson, Selside. Staying with Honeyhill the next at 900gns, was a 2017 Peacehay Wellington daughter with a single Bare Boy ewe lamb, this quality outfit, again, went home with Ben Marsden Farms. The final 900gn lot was from the Forth House pen, with a 2015 Forth House Unique daughter with a Milnbank Yellowstone tup lamb. The buyer of this ewe was Messrs J Garth & Son, Clapham, North Yorkshire. Leading the dry gimmer hoggs was a Milnbank Yellowstone daughter out of a Forth House Unique dam at 800gns, this was the choice of Bambers Farm Ltd, Lancaster. Averages Honeyhill – 42 Ewes with Lambs at Foot £414.75 Forth House – 18 Ewes with Lambs at Foot £588, 22 Gimmer Hoggs £411.89

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 7th June There was a slightly smaller entry of Store Cattle this week which saw a very mixed show forward. Younger types of cattle were a decent trade and good to sell, but any not in specification were a bit less on the week and harder to place. Angus’ dominated the bullock and heifer trade today with bullocks selling to £1350 from J Hesketh, Preston, £1300 from S Kellet & Sons, Pilling and £1280 from R & E Ladds, Kendal, with heifers topping at £1140 from V & EJ Chadwick, Sowerby. Limousin bullocks sold to a top of £1240 from S Kellet & Sons closely followed by JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe selling Limousins to £1200. £1180 was achieved numerous times for bullocks today, firstly from S Kellet & Sons with Montbeliardes and secondly from JS Clark & Sons, Catforth with Angus’. British Blue bullocks achieved £1170 twice, firstly from R & E Ladds and then from KG & LM Park, Witherslack. Hereford heifers sold to £1140 from J Hesketh with AT Burrow & Son, Hornby selling Limousin heifers to £1110. Friesians this week sold to £1060 from K & DE Woodhouse, Ellel.

There was a larger entry of 99 Cast Cows forward today selling to a slightly sharper trade with an average of 119p/kg achieved for all forward. Topping the trade today was a Limousin heifer from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton selling to 175.5p/kg. Cast Cows sold to a top of 149.5p/kg today for an Angus from GR & A Foy, Conder Green, who also sold British Blue cows to 139.5p/kg. Limousin cows sold to 139.5p/kg from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet with DH & M Kellet & Sons, Thurnham selling a Hereford to the same price. Top price per head today was £1151 for a Hereford cow from JR & A Thornton, Winmarleigh. A few cast steers today saw Cardwell Farms, Esprick top the market at 161.5p/kg for a British Blues with K & DE Woodhouse, Ellel selling an Angus to 159.5p/kg or £1116. Black and whites today saw a Friesian heifer from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton sell to 159.5p/kg and AT Burrow & Son, Hornby sell a heifer to 151.5p/kg. Top grossing Friesian today was from JR & A Thornton selling to £1038.

There was a larger entry of Calves forward this week which sold to a top price of £365 for a super Welsh Black bull from WM & D Smith, Cockerham who also sold others to £340. Well done Montbeliardes sold to £252 for a 3 week old bull. A run of young Herefords from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green topped at £222 for bulls. Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale had their usual quality calves on offer today topping at £220 for a Hereford bull with heifers selling to £200. British Blue bulls topped at £350 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. There were just a handful of stirks on offer today following on from the monthly sale last week. Selling to a top of £445 was a British Blue bull from WG & RG Riley, Chorley with heifers from the same home selling to £335. Angus heifer stirks sold to a top of £350 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel with others at £300. More calves are required for next week to satisfy buyer’s demands.

Monday 10th June There was once again over 500 Spring Lambs forward this week selling to an average, very much in line with other markets, of 211p/kg. Once again, good conformation lambs were in high demand at Lancaster and easily selling in excess of the 220p/kg. Topping the market today at 236p/kg was Charollais from JA Lambert, Out Rawcliffe. Texels sold to 235p/kg from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth purchased by Gregory Williams Butchers, Lancaster. Other Texel lambs sold to 233p/kg and 230p/kg from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Topping the market today at £105 was Texel lambs from GH Sanderson & Son, Catforth, £104 from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale and £100 S Wilson & Son. Suffolks sold to a top of £103 from G Sagar & Son, Caton and £99 from JJ & M Metcalfe, Casterton. Charollais sold to a top of £97 from DJ Casson & Son, Slyne with Dorsets selling to £96 from MJ & LC Lund, Quernmore.

Prime Hogg numbers are beginning to dry up very quickly now with an improvement in the trade this week. Texel hoggs sold to a top of £84 from DM Cardwell, Stalmine with Swaledales selling to £78 from JA Simpson, Barnacre. Plenty of well-fleshed hoggs sold in the seventies.

J36 Sale Reports Tuesday 11th June The monthly sale of Pigs saw a fast trade for all classes with 16 active buyers and several going home empty handed. Vendors are thanked for pre-entering their pigs with the office which helped us to canvass buyers ahead of the sale and maximise returns. 42 Prime pigs generated a market average of 107p/kg with a top price of 156p/kg achieved for a White Gilt from W Stamper, Chipping with others to 145p/kg for Pietrain x hogs from BR Harrison, Windermere. Well-finished pigs in the 95kg–110kg range were easily sold and generally 120p/kg to 135p/kg. Lighter weight pigs sold to 141p/kg but buyers were still cautious of coloured pigs and boars. 10 cull sows were forward selling to £130 from TG & MP Ofee, Cleator with other meated white sows £75 to £100, dependent on weight. Top pence per kilo achieved was 53p/kg from D Baldwin, Ulverston and M Hall, Wigton. Cull boars sold to £95 (38p/kg) from N Johnson, Penrith. Store pigs sold to £82 for a pen of 7 Large White x from C & J Bennett, Preston. Coloured stores sold to £48 for Large Black x from J McEwan, Dumfries with other stores £38 to £47 depending on quality and colour. Weaners were the strongest trade for several months selling to £48 for some superb Pietrain x Saddlebacks from J Miller, Garstang who sold others of the same breeding at £44. Large White Weaners sold to £42 from M Bennett, Penrith, with smallest sorts £12 - £20. The weekly sale of Spring Lambs at J36 had a smaller entry forward but sold to a much improved trade this week and thanks goes to our vendors for showing with us today, who were rewarded with a good market average of 216p/kg. Lambs sold to a top of 256p/kg for Beltexs from DC, D & J Taylor, Skelsmergh coming to £95, purchased by Plumgarths Farm Shop. This was followed by 33kg Texels from J Bell, Wennington selling to 248p/kg with 40kg Texel selling to 245p/kg or £98 from JA Airey, New Hutton, purchased by Plumgarths Farm Shop. Plenty of better conformation lambs sold in excess of 225p/kg. Topping the market this week was Freddie Willison, Levens selling a Texel lamb to £112 with other Texel lambs selling to £109 from HR & KR Hodgson, Barbon. Suffolks sold to a top of £108.50 and £108 from JG & BJ Escolme, Killington. Other Suffolks sold to £107 from S Procter, Selside and JD, EM & JA Atkinson, Skelsmergh. Light weight, good conformation lambs in the mid 30kg mark were met by plenty of demand.

There was a smaller entry of Prime Hoggs as the season comes to an end. The market today topped at £88 for Texels from C Gawthrop, Millom.

There was a sharper trade for Cast Sheep today with a smaller entry forward in which more were needed to fulfil our busy ring of buyers requirements. Top price today was Texel cast ewes from RT & ME Sutton, Stainton selling to £97. Suffolk ewes topped at £94 from BR Harrison, Windermere. Continental ewes topped at £93 from FE & CM Robinson & Son, Crooklands. Plenty of other Continentals sold around the £90 mark. Mules sold to a top of £82 from JT Procter, Grange-over-Sands with others from the same home selling to £78. Horned ewes topped at £61 twice, firstly for Rough Fells from JF Cook, Witherslack and Dalesbred from JA Bennett, Longsleddale. Herdwick ewes topped at £52 from A & L Birkett, Little Langdale.
