NWA Lancaster Friday 6th January The opening sale of Calves and Stirks saw an entry of 70 forward selling to a continued strong trade at Lancaster with, once again, a busy ring of buyers present. Strong beef calves sold to a good trade with smaller young beef calves harder to place this week. The trade topped £425 for British Blue bull calves from AW & AM Park and Sons of Walker I’Th Fields. Plenty of strong British Blue beef bulls sold in excess of £350. Angus bull calves sold to a top of £345 from Wallbank Farms. A strong trade for heifer calves with breeding potential with a few men in the market today looking to purchase this type of cattle. Heifers sold to a top of £332 from JE & J Pye & Son of Gibsons Farm for British Blues. In line with other local markets this week a sharper trade for black and whites was enjoyed. A large entry of Cast Cows was expected today with 96 going under the gavel, more could easily have been sold to the advantage of the vendor. Once again, a busy ring of buyers ensured all types of cows sold to a strong trade. An average of over 100p/kg. Well fleshed better conformation beef cows regularly selling beyond the 140p/kg mark topping at 149.5p/kg with black and whites also selling to this price as well. Plenty of good black and whites selling just shy of the 120p/kg mark. There is still plenty of demand for over thirty month heifers at Lancaster with Limousins selling to 194.5p/kg from JM & JJ Dawson of Field Head. The opening sale of Store Cattle at Lancaster had a catalogued entry of over 200 forward with a strong trade from start to finish, the last animal through the ring from DW & NM Alderson of High Green Farm making £1,400 for a Hereford bullock. A great start to the year with a Charolais bullock from TN Pye and Partners of Langthwaite Farm selling to £1,480. Plenty of strong short term cattle selling in excess of £1,200 and £1,300. Smaller cattle also selling to a continue trade at Lancaster with buyers in the market to cater for all ages and types. Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 9th January NWA Lancaster had on offer 377 Prime Hoggs and 52 Cast Sheep at the weekly sale on Monday 9th January. Prime Hoggs topped at £89.50 for a cracking 59kg Texel, consigned by T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Brown Brook. Top price per kilo went to IT Richardson, Beech Grove House, for 8 smart Beltex Hoggs scaling 35kg and realised 197p/kg. There was a smaller show of Hoggs on offer, but trade was brisk for all classes. Good quality handy weight Hoggs were 170-180p/kg and there was an overall average of 160.5p.kg. Texel x Hoggs from T & CM Kelsall, & Sons, Brown Brook, peaked at £85.50, with Charollais Hoggs consigned by T Longton & Son, Rooten Brook sell to £77.00, IT Richardson, Beech Grove House saw his pen of Beltex Hoggs realise £76.50, Suffolks also sold to £76.50 from PM & ST Entwistle, Lentworth Farm. J36 Sale Reports Thursday 5th January The first sale of Calves and Stirks at J36 of the New Year had an entry of 70 forward where the trade was very dependent upon the quality of the calves. Young beef calves saw bull and heifer calves sell to the late £200s regularly. Black and white bull calves were eagerly bid for with a couple of fresh faces around the ring today looking to purchase black and whites. Black and white calves topped at £170 from RJ & KR Wilkinson of Low Foulshaw with nicer rearing types selling in and around the £100 mark. Good fleshy young black and whites sold between £60 and £80. A good number of weanling blues forward this week were keenly bid for with British Blue weanlings regularly selling in excess of £400 topping at £440 from G Wilson of Low field farm of Appleby. Black and white weanlings topped at £200 Messrs Sowerby of Townhead Farm of Appleby. OTM Cows sold away to a top price of £1023.98 or 184.5p/kg for a 555kg Stabiliser, consigned by A Dixon, Kit Cragg. JJ & MA Park & Son, Low Sizergh Farm, had the next best price of £914.15 for a 778kg Montbeliarde. A Limousin cow from RH, M & S Boyren, Hill Park, scaling 650kg sold to £893.75. OTM Heifer's topped at £994.75 or 141.5p/kg for a 703kg Friesian from Messrs Sowerby, Townhead Farm. In the bull section a Stabliser scaling 930kg, realised £1111.35/119.5p/kg, from A Dixon, Kit Cragg. An entry of 27 forward sold to a market average of 109p/kg with an active ring of seven buyers, which more cattle could have easily have been sold to the vendors advantage. Breeding Cattle peaked at £1250 for a nice young outfit of a Limousin X heifer with Simmental X heifer calf at foot, which was consigned by DJ & A Freeman, Town End. JA & SA Allen, Barker Knott, had a British Blue x cow with Charolais X heifer calf, which realised £1150. There was a smaller entry of Store Cattle on offer this morning, but stock maintained recent rates. Topping the store trade today was a pen of strong, well-bred Continental bullocks consigned by Low Moor House Farm Ltd, which realised £940, their next lot sold to £840. TW & J Beaty, Long Green Hall, sold good sweet Limousin heifers for £780 and stretchy British Blue selling for £740. Leading the bull trade was RI Dixon, Low Newton Farm, with very shapely Limousins, his top price was £800, followed by £780. Native bred bulls sold to £640 & £600 for Aberdeen Angus, and £600 for Herefords, which were consigned by RJ & J Gardner, Natland Mill Beck. The next sale of Store Cattle will also include the annual New Year Show and Sale on Thursday 19th January 2017, entries are now invited for the catalogue with the closing date being Wednesday 11th January. J36 Sale Reports Tuesday 10th January The monthly sale of Pigs saw an entry of 120 forward were top price per head for gilts was £135 and £130 for Pietrain pigs which were consigned by C Metcalfe, Helton Gate. Sows sold away to £110 from T & S Wilson, Scales Farm. M Bennet, Ellonby Hall sold his gilts for £85, with hoggs from P Woof, Storth End Farm realising £80. Store gilts peaked at £82 which were consigned by JH & A Metcalfe & Son, Holme Farm. E & SM Halpin, Rakesmoor Farm pens sold for £36 and £30. MB Fawcett, Stainderbar Farm also realised £36. The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs had an entry of 1236 which sold to a top price per head of £107 for an absolute cracker of a Beltex, which scaled 48kg, and was consigned by ME Wannop & Sons Ltd, Heaton Hall Farm. P & TL Edmondson Ltd, Low Hall Farm, had a superb Beltex scaling 40kg and sold away to the top pence per kilo of 247.5p/kg, he also had a Beltex weighing 41kg which sold to £97/236.6p/kg. JD Chapman, Wray Farm consigned a 36kg Beltex Hogg which realised £84/233.3p/kg. The top price per head for Texels was £90, from JH Bell, Parkwood View, and JG Harryman, The Galleon. Suffolk Hoggs peaked at £84 for a pair from DM & D Cook, Smithy Green Farm, and his Charollais Hoggs sold to a top of £78. A pair of Cheviots from HR & KA Hodgson, Howriggs realised £80 and F & SA Edmondson, Netherhouses sold his Mules for a top of £78, with his Swaledales making £68. In the Rough Fell section, AEA Harrison, Millriggs peaked at £64, Masham Hoggs from J Black & Son, Bridgestone realised £57 and Herdwicks sold to £54 from Low Moor Howe Farm. There was a very mixed show of Hoggs forward for today’s sale, with many heavy types on offer, which were more difficult to sell. Hoggs which were good shapes and had meat on them were selling away at recent rates, 1236 Hoggs sold to a market average 153.14p/kg. A smaller entry of Cast Sheep forward this week with just less than 300 going under the gavel at J36 where a good selection of all classes were on offer today. Topping this afternoons trade was KR & CA Williamson, Beck Foot Farm Cottage, for a Suffolk cross ewe at £91. Topping the cast rams was a Texel from MJ Shepard, Gaskell House. Well fleshed Texel and Continental ewes sold to a nice trade of around the £75-£80 mark. A lean selection of Swaledale ewes forward with fleshed ewes selling away to a top of £50. Mule ewes sold to a top of £60 with an average of £51.

Basic Payment Scheme 2016 Although there are still clients who have not been paid fully in 2015, the payment window for 2016 opens on the 1st December. RPA are still saying they will pay 90% of farmers by the end of December, but whether this payment will actually be correct we are not sure. If you receive any money this is wonderful and we expect payments to be 17% higher that 2015. If there is much difference please let us know and we can check to see if your 2015 payment was actually correct, as many we were not.
