The great Annual Show and Sale of Swaledale Draft Ewes & Shearling has once again been a huge success with vendors leaving delighted with their day’s trading. Averages were up across the board with ewes levelling at £166.31 – an increase of £26 on the year, shearlings averaged a staggering £193.31 which was up a whopping £30 on the year and gimmer lambs again saw an increase of £29 averaging £97.17.
The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Mr John Mason, Oddacres and Mr Ted Telford, Roadhead who we thank for working through the classes e iciently and expertly this morning. They awarded the results as follows:

The sale topped at £360 for the sale Champions from E&A Wear, Howe Green who sold a pen of 18 at £300. The Reserve Champion honours went to RS&BA Harker, Overthwaite which sold at £350. Selling at £300 was the best of the run from Drinkall Bros, Catshaw with shearlings from JA Alderson, Barras reaching £290. DC&KL Hutchinson, Old Spital enjoyed their day’s trading topping at £280 and Calderside Farms topping at £260.
Other notable prices saw R&PE Hargreaves, Meadow Bank sell shearlings at £240, ewes to £222 from W&PA Walton, Corney and shearlings to £210 from both MP&A Capstick, High Lane & M&EM Wilson, Arngill House.

Rough Fell Draft ewes sell to £232 at North West Auctions Junction 36.
The much-anticipated annual prize show and sale of Rough Fell breeding sheep once again saw a packed ringside of buyers in attendance, keen to secure additional and replacement stock.

Strong bodied sheep were keenly completed for, with a pair of eye catching one crop ewes from VR Guy leading the sale at £232, with a pair of two crops from NC&S Dodd achieving £195. The first prize pen three crop ewes from P&S Hoggarth sold at £170, with others £165 NC&S Dodd. Other ewes were generally £120 to £135, with all sold averaging £121.
Shearlings sold to £162 on several occasions from P&S Hoggarth, with others £150 from NC&S Dodd, all sold averaged £118. Several pens of gimmer lambs forward sold to £98 from W Moore, with all sold averaging £84.

Herdwick, Cheviot & Other Hill Breeds.
Sale of predominantly Cheviot and Herdwicks provided a successful encore to the tremendous sale of the previous day and the Rough Fells this morning.


Herdwicks were a strong trade particularly for gimmer shearlings topping at £128 from MJ&JD Handley, Archers Hall. The average for gimmer shearlings was £123, strong ewes were in demand with a top price of £100 from VJ Edgar, averaging £90 overall.
Cheviot and Cheviot cross buyers were on form today, with demand for gimmer shearlings being particularly strong. Topping todays trade was L Thompson making £210, then closely followed with a pen at £200. Cheviot shearlings averaged £159.27 and ewes averaged £147.65. A special mention to the Curwen Family for a tremendous run of 140 shearlings and ewes, averaging £166.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Online Sale of Registered Fell Ponies on behalf ofthe Bracklinn and Drybarrows Studs. Sunday 28th September 2025.
Once again North West Auctions were delighted to host the online sale on behalf of the Bracklinn and Drybarrows Studs.
The sale topped at a fabulous £3,500 for Bracklinn Raptor a very smart colt foal with breeding behind him by Rocky II and out of Bracklinn Beth, who heads to Cumbria as a potential future stud stallion, followed closely by Drybarrows Kelpie, a bright bay filly foal by Drybarrows Endurance and out of Guards Ann, who will travel down to Sussex.
Drybarrows Koko a grey filly by Drybarrows Exclusive, out of Drybarrows Coco sold at £2900 to Cockermouth.
Drybarrows Kindred, Drybarrows Kraven and Bracklinn Bobcat all sold for £1600 and the two yearlings, Bracklinn Digby and Bracklinn E ie both went on to sell for £1550. Two ponies will travel to Denmark and a further two will travel to the Netherlands in the near future with other ponies selling to the South of England, top of Scotland and locally.

Today’s word is GROWTH!
They say actions speak louder than words but if we had to choose one word for today at Junction 36 it would be ‘growth’. More lambs, more buyers and a trade that continues to reward quality, all signs pointing firmly in the right direct.
Wall to wall with sheep today saw a solid trade again for lambs from the first minute to the last and an overall average of 304p/kg. Lambs topped today for a smashing pair of Charollais cross types at £200 or 377.4p/kg from JA&R Geldard & Sons. PJ&ES Rogerson brought another fantastic run of lambs and topped at £193 for a single Texel. J Twigge also had his usual quality run of sheep topping at 352.4p/kg for a pair of Beltex. Lighter lambs also good to sell today, with a pen of five 39kg Charollais selling for 333.3p/kg from JC Walling. Mules topped at £158 for a pen of 24 weighting 52kg from Calderside Farm.

They say everything comes in threes and todays show was no exception with Bob Lawrence gaining the champion rosette to complete the trio of Ambleside Fair, NEMSA sale and the new format second sale championship. Trade started o at a passable pace and accelerated and gained pace as it went on. ‘On fire’sprung to mind by the end of it. Average finalised at £127.90 for Mules with
champion pen topping at £265.
Texel/Beltex lambs were strong throughout with top price being reached by Miss Robyn Allen, St Annes. The same vendor matched this with additional pens at £170 and £165 to complete a good show.
A pen of cheviot mules took reserve champion today from John Woof, Firbank making £175. Cheviot mules were very sought after all-round.

Plenty of interest in stirks with steers selling to £1490 for British Blue cross from B Robinson, with other yearlings £12890 to £1450. Younger beef steers were £950 to £1150. Diary steers sold to £1180 for Holstein Friesian. Heifers sold to £1210 for ten month old British Blue cross with other younger heifers £840 to £920. Bull stirks saw British Blue cross selling to £1420, with recently weaned dairy bulls to £960 for Montbeliarde and £540 for Holstein Friesian.

Cleared for Take O – Suckler Calves Fly at Junction 36. Up, up and away. Suckled calves hit cruising altitude from the word go at today’s sale, with trade taking o and never looking back. From lightweights to the stronger end, the entire section was met with sky high demand from buyers circling the ring eager to land the best types. Vendors enjoyed a smooth flight with no signs of turbulence as prices soared well above expectations.

A fantastic trade was also met for Store Cattle as they continue to be in extremely high demand. A 20 month old British Blue heifer from S Whitehead sold for £2360, the same home had a Limousin heifer of similar age sell for £2200. 2 year old Limousin bullocks from AJ & H Clark sold up to £2230. The same home had a further pair at £2120.
Charolais bullocks at 17 months old sold for £2120 from MT Howarth. 20 month old Aberdeen Angus bullocks sold to £2030 for a pen of 3 from Messrs A & B Pickthall. Another entry of cull cows filling the pens pre sale, with 85 penned and all selling to an average of 255p/kg. The best of the beef cows sold to 354p/kg and £2765 for a Limousin cross from PJ&ES Rogerson, with others nicely 290p/kg to 320p/kg and £2050 to £2400. Dairy cows peaked at 299p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from RJ&D Holden with others selling to £2357. Medium parlour types were 240p/kg to 260p/kg, with harder worked 210p/kg to 235p/kg. OTM heifers saw Aberdeen Angus cross selling to 329p/kg and £2352, with dairy heifer to 294p/kg and £1825. Steers sold to 329p/kg and £2171. Stock bulls in abundance today, selling to 304p/kg for British Shorthorns with another British Shorthorn £3121. Most bulls were 255p/kg to 285p/kg.

83 calves today at Lancaster weekly sale, with trade deemed to be sharper than expected. Topping at £900 was a British Blue from JS&KM Wilson, Kendal who also sold five month old Fleckvieh to £880. Charolais bulls sold to £800 from MJ Fell, Whittington with others to £710 from GJ&G Billington, Garstang who sold one month olds to £670. Barber Farms sold 30 day old British Blue bulls to £630, with two week old British Blue to £370 from T&CM Kelsall, Chipping.

Heifer calves sold to £840 for British Blues from AW&AM Park, Ellel who sold others to £770 and £700. JH Towers & Son, Tunstall reached £550 again for British Blues, with Charolais at the same price from I Slater, Bleasdale. Aberdeen Angus achieved £460 from WN&D Smith, Cockerham at six weeks old.

The weekly sale of store cattle saw an animated trade, as talk of a rise in the o erings gave our buyers the confidence to get on and bid, with prices seeing a lift on the week. Top of the shop today was regular vendor EW&CR Clegg & Sons, with their pen of four
well farmed Aberdeen Angus steers to £2620. Other Aberdeen Angus steers to £2550 from I&ME Askew, New Hutton with numerous other pens of Aberdeen Angus steers to £2500. 54 Aberdeen Angus steers today in Lancaster averaged a pleasing £2219. If you have Aberdeen Angus cattle to sell, there is only one place for them and that’s at Lancaster Auction. Charolais steers from JM Haddow, Milnthorpe achieved £2550 for a pair with SM Norcli e, Over Wyresdale seeing their consignment of well farmed Charolais steers to £2200. A cracking trio of British Blue steers from JD&GM Bracken, Garstang sold to £2520. Others from EW&CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine achieved £2500. Plenty more British Blue steers were around the £2300 to £2400 mark. Hereford steers sold to £2300 for a well fleshed pair from J Fisher & Son, White Chapel with others to £2250 from JM Haddow, Milnthorpe. Lancasters weekly sale of OTM’s consisted of a very mixed show of 90, selling to a stand on trade. Cast bulls led the way topping at £2599 for an Aberdeen Angus from JF&JC Hewitt & Family, Nateby with other cast bulls from WS Burrow, Silverdale achieving £2532 for a Hereford. Younger Aberdeen Angus bulls sold to 344.5p/kg from RR&M Bamber, Kendal.
OTM cows saw Aberdeen Angus sell to £2512, Limousin cows sold to £2485 or 339.5p/kg from R&S Mitchell, Ellel. JA&R Geldard & Sons saw their consignment of Stabiliser cattle top at £2342, while Simmental OTM’s saw Barlow Bros, Preston at £2283. Other Simmental sold to £2258 from PJ&ES Rogerson, Great Asby. British Blue OTMs sold to 334.5p/kg from RHM&S Boyren, Colton. Friesian OTM cows from MJ Fell, Carnforth sold to £2024, with other Friesian OTMs at £1885 from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham. Plenty of other Friesian OTMs were around £1700 to £1800 or 260p/kg to 270p/kg. All cows today averaged 250p/kg, which included some very lean cows. OTM heifer saw an overall average of 280p/kg, which consisted of mainly dairy bred cattle. AT Burrow & Son, Hornby achieved 309.5p/kg or £2234 for a Friesian, with others to 309.5p/kg from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor.
