Individual Female Blue Faced Leicester Sale
Junction 36 lay witness to an impressive entry and level of quality that lived up to the expectation of a top class show and sale of Blue Faced Leicester females. The number of vendors and entries being up on the year.
Judging was kindly undertaken by Mr Neil Marston, Highberries who we thank very much for his time and expertise. The Overall Championship being awarded to the 1st prize gimmer hogg from Messrs Lord, Hewgill sired by a homebred tup RO38 Hewgill. A classy hogg which went on to top the market at 8000gns, purchased by Ridley Craig, Hanging Wells, Weardale.
Reserve Champion went to the 1st prize ewe from HW&G White, Ribblesdale sired by their own M002 ram and in-lamb to the V001 Shitlington sire. She went on to make 3000gns going to K&HA Ridley, Allen Shields.
The 1st prize gimmer shearling from MR Thornborrow, Dawyk sired by SO21 Riddings Longshot, in-lamb to their homebred VO10 sire went on to make 2200gns and was purchased by Miss Millie Richardson, Ghyll House, Appleby.
There was also recipient ewes available carrying embryos and topping this category was a ewe scanned for 1 carrying a lamb sired by GO11 Smearsett from Robin & Rachel Booth, Smearsett, making 2000gns.
Plenty of notable prices were witnessed throughout the sale, with the show of females being a credit to all the breeders and we thank all of them for their support. We would also like to thank the buyers for making the sale the success it was.

The Annual Show and Sale of Rough Fell In-Lamb Females and Gimmer Hoggs drew a good crowd with a buoyant trade throughout. Trade topped at 1000gns for an in-lamb ewe from B&J Knowles, Selside with a further two at 700gns from MP & A Capstick, High Lane and JA Law, Marsh House respectively. Other notable prices include 650gns for MP & A Capstick, 600gns for B&J Knowles, 550gns for J Hunter and 500gns for S&W Dickinson, J Capstick and J Hunter. Gimmer hoggs topped at 300gns from AJ Ellis.

Today’s sale also included a sale for multi-breed individual females, topping at 800gns for Dutch Spotted gimmer hoggs from DA Dixon, Grayrigg. Other Dutch Spotteds sold to 750gns from AG Morton, Penrith for in-lamb shearlings with in-lamb ewes selling at 600gns from Megan Rowlandson, Flookburgh. Other breeds saw the annual consignment of top quality Cheviots from Mr KO Stones, Marrick sell at 600gns and
550gns. Gimmer hoggs from AL Thompson, Colne sold to 300gns for Charolais x Beltex with others at 280gns.

PRIME HOGGS
The winter blues were blown away at Lancaster Auction this morning with the Prime hogg trade today having a spring in its step.
Those vendors who drew lambs were duly rewarded with a competitive crowd of 8 buyers keen to secure lambs of all classifications to fulfil Monday morning orders.
Hoggs today ranged from 34kg to 55kg with an average of 355p/kg achieved.

JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore lead the way once again selling Beltex crosses to 439p/kg & £193 with others 423p/kg & £186. Others 391p/kg & £184 for SH & LE Birkett. Well finished hoggs nicely 340p/kg to 365p/kg being £115 to £130 over weight. Hill bred hoggs to £169 & 367p/kg for Cheviots and £150 & 329p/kg for Mules.
Heavy weights to £181 and 335p/kg and light weights £127 & 347p/kg.
More hoggs required each week to satisfy the Monday morning demand.

Happy Hoggs, hurried buyers and a healthier trade.
Larger numbers combined with a larger appetite today saw an increase in trade for all shapes, weights and types. A weight range of 21 to 70kg faced a fierce level of bidding from the o set. Once again in around the 40kg mark the best article to sell on the day with texels topping at 412.5ppk from Messers ST Birkett & Son, Beltex of the same weight selling to 398ppk from Messers GM&A Jackson, A pen of 6 Beltex slightly lighter making 394.9 from Messrs LE&A Ridding, lighter end of hoggs also a joy to sell with 30kg of hoggs hitting 393.3ppk from LA&M Lambert. Cheviots sold to 365.6ppk for a pen of 16 from Stockdale Farms while Herdwicks topped at 346.7ppk from Messrs SW&A Hoggarth, Heavies also a lump dearer on the week. Texels topped at £204. An overall average of 331 and a SQQ of 340 was achieved today with more and more vendors talking advantage of the competitive trade and prompt payment. The new sale format of a 12noon start in ring 2 saw an abundance of buyers in attendance with new faces once again ringside. All classes and types were keenly competed for with more required each sale. Steers sold to a top price of £1580 for 8m Char x from Messrs Barker who sold others at £1540. A run of Sim-Luing steers 8/9m from Low Moor Howe Farm Ltd peaked at £1560 with others £1500. Native sired steers sold to £1240 for AAx & Shorthorn x from JJ & J Towers. Younger steers to £1180 for BRB x and £1100 AAx. Several recently weaned steers peaked at £1100 for 5m Limx from J&O Galbraith and £1020 FKV from D&A Nicholson. Heifers peaked at £1360 for a pair of Limx (7m) from PW Clarke with AAx (8m) £1320 from R&B Parker and Hereford x £1300 (7m) from R Dick. 'Guide Price Ignored'
Any suggestions of a steadier trade were laughed out of the ring today, as store cattle at Junction 36 comfortably outperformed expectations. Buyers came loaded, competition was relentless and prices marched on with real authority from start to finish.
18 month old bullocks sold to £2310 for a Limousin from Messrs GH Jones. Others to £2300 from RG&LR Holmes and £2240 for a Charolais of a similar age from D&E Whitaker. Bulls zoomed to £2320 from S Boswoth for a Limousin. The same home sold Bazadaise bulls to £2240. British Blue heifers made £2180 for a pair from DE&SM Moorhouse. Just behind was a British Blue again at £2160 from JW&ME Taylor. Three Aberdeen Angus bullocks at 20 months sold for £2190 again from Messrs Whitaker. Hereford bullocks of the same age made £2180 from JL Bird.

OTM/CAST CATTLE
No sign of let up today with cast cattle flying, 76 head of cattle coming to an average of 282p/kg. Top price overall came from Messrs Rogerson, Maison Gill with a Limousin cow weighing 886kg making £2896.77.
Friesian / Holstein cattle averaged £1520 with a top price of £2244.69 from Strickland Hill, Witherslack.
Top price for p/pk from RG&LR Holmes, Valley View make 374p/kg for a Limousin steer at 671kg making £2512.90.

The momentum continues in Lancaster calf ring with bull calves to £940 x3 twice for British Blue from JS Towers & H Kent, Dolphinholme and once for a British Blue from J & G Thornley, Kirkham. Other British Blues to £920 from WN & D Smith, Cockerham with Aberdeen Angus to £890 from JS Towers & H Kent. 4–5-week-old bulls sold to £680 x2 for
British Blues from Barber Farms, Brock and £640 x2 from JP & C Robson, Brock. Black and whites bulls sold to £280 from Wallbank Farms, WN & D Smith and Ivan Slater Ltd.
Heifer calves to £800 for Limousin x from JS Towers & H Kent, with British Blue to £790 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham. Aberdeen Angus sold to £660 from SW & K Metcalfe, Whittington with this good home selling Charolais to £650.

The weekly sale of store cattle would see vendors well pleased with their prices as continued downward pressure on the finished beef prices.
DJ Townley, Stodday topping the trade this week with his very shapely British Blue bull at £3150.
Store steers saw regular Lancaster supporter A & E Clarkson, Thurnham hitting the £2500 mark with his British Blue steers with other British Blues from the same good home at £2480. Simmental steers to £2450 from J & M Cockett, Ingleton with H Morgan, Stalmine at the same price this time for a trio of Charolais. Limousin steers to £2480 from R Capstick, Ingleton. Aberdeen Angus to £2450 from J & M Cockett, Ingleton. Hereford steers to £2300 from A & FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel who topped the dairy bred section with Friesian steers to £2400 with Fleckvieh from J & M Cockett, Ingleton at £2380 and LE & A Ridding, Selside close behind at £2300 for Friesians. Younger steers looking well sold round the £1900-£2000.
Store heifers topped at £2200 from R & K Jenkinson, Pilling for Friesian. British Blues to £2180 from JW & DL Park, Ellel with others at £2150 from AJ & D Knowles, Kendal. A trio of Limousin heifers from GA & A Atkinson, Cantsfield to £2100. Aberdeen Angus heifers to £2080 from Holgate Caravans, Carnforth and for a trio of Aberdeen Angus heifers at
the same price from J Oddie & Son, Balderstone. Hereford heifers to £2080 from JW & DL Park, Ellel.

OTMs would see a shortage of numbers resulting in a stronger trade on the week with a pleasing average of 288.5ppk.
Topping the trade this week was DE & SM Moorhouse with his Limousin cast bull at £3334.97 closely followed by KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead with a cracking Limousin cow at £3082.59 or 349.5ppk. Other beef bred otm cows to 359.5ppk or £2811 from GR & A Foy, Conder Green. Dairy bred otm cows saw Friesians to 299.5ppk from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton with Oxcli e with others to 289.5ppk or £2289.95 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel who also had one at 274.5ppk. Cows straight out the parlour round the 245ppk.
OTM heifers from M Allen, Carnforth would see their Stabiliser heifer to 369.5ppk or £2172.66 with O Butler, Esprick also at 369.5ppk this time for an Aberdeen Angus. Dairy
bred heifers saw Friesians to 319.5ppk or £1913.81 from AT Burrow & Son, Lancaster others from W & S Airey, Carnforth at 304.5ppk. Otm heifers today averaged 307ppk/
OTM steers saw a decent entry with them averaging 368.32ppk. Topping at 374.5ppk for Aberdeen Angus from O Butler, Esprick. Per head at £2660 from SJ & AL Hargreaves, Morecambe for a British Blue.
