Lancaster Store Cattle - Friday 27th October There was another good entry of Store Cattle forward at Lancaster today, selling to a stronger trade for all types of cattle and vendors leaving well satisfied. Short keep cattle were noticeably up on the week, selling to a top of £1,450 for British Blue heifers from RG Capstick and Son of Ingleton with Limousin bullocks selling to £1430 and £1340 from M & RW Stirzaker of Milnthorpe, a dozen cattle sold for £1300 or more. Black and whites were a sharper trade, topping at £1050 from JS Clark and Sons of Godson House with the largest black and white bullocks selling over £1000. All black and whites forward sold to a market average of £779. Vendors are reminded that Gates are open from 7am and requested to forward cattle for sale ASAP with fully completed paperwork to avoid queues. A bumper entry of 161 Cast Cows forward sold to a full complement of cast cow buyers, leading to a continued strong trade, especially for the time of the year. An overall market average of 112p/kg was achieved, with all black and white cows forward selling to a market average of 105p/kg. Limousin cast cows topped the market selling to 179.5p/kg from JH Atkinson and Partner of Mosergh. Following ministry inspections, vendors are reminded to ensure that cattle are fit to travel to the auction market and lame and cows with over grown feet will be turned away. There was another strong entry of Calves forward today selling to another solid trade with many customers commenting a stronger trade than other local centres. A busy ringside of buyers saw some going home empty handed. Good quality beef calves were, once again, in strong demand and selling in excess of £300, selling to a top of £400 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons of Brown Brook. All British Blue bulls forward sold to a market average of £309, with British Blue heifers from the same home selling to £330 and £315. Limousin bull calves sold to £360 and £350 from JM Capstick of Brantbeck. A plainer entry of black and whites forward today with a shortage of good black and whites to fulfil the requirements of buyers with bobby calves this week noticeably more money. A good entry of stirks in the market saw British Blue bullocks sell to £540 from G & MA Smith of Samlesbury with Angus bullocks to £490 and British Blue heifers to £465. A consignment of Black and White five month old bullocks sold to £270. Lancaster Sale Reports Monday 6th November There was a disappointing number of Prime Lambs in the market today but there was certainly no disappointment with the trade as all vendor went away pleased. Well meated lambs were very good to sell with lightweight store type lambs better off being sold in the store lamb ring. An overall market average of 171.9p/kg was achieved with lambs weighing between 39-45kg averaging 178p/kg. The trade topped at £92.50 or 206p/kg from JK & BE Townley of Mearsbeck for Texel lambs. A consignment of Texel lambs from Peter Robinson of Claughton on Brock sold to £89.50 and £85.50 or 199p/kg. A smaller entry of mules forward this week sold to a continued strong trade with 44kg mules from S Park of Highfield Farm. There was more Cast Ewes in the market today consisting of mainly lean hill ewes. The large number of ewes on the market at the moment is making leaner hill ewes harder to place and with the wet and trashy weather less people in the market looking for feeding ewes to feed this time. J36 Sale Reports Thursday 2nd November There was a busy ringside of buyers forward for this fortnight’s sale of Store Lambs at Junction 36. A strong contingent of buyers from the south are now present, with the winter grass keep and stubble crops now available. All classes of lambs sold to a sharper trade, with strong Continental and Suffolk lambs selling well in to the sixties. February-April lambs were in strong demand today, with buyers now in the market looking for long keep lambs. Trade today was topped by a pen of Texel lambs forward from IE&MA Taylor of High Deepslack selling to £69.50 per head, closely followed by AT Threlkeld Ltd of Bowkerstead Farm at £68.50, with all Texel lambs in the market achieving an average of £56.59 per head. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £67 from SE Harrison of Force Mill, to average £54.87 and Charollais x lambs to £60.50 from T Sharp of Gateside Farm to average £52.28. Hill bred lambs looking sharper than the previous sale and in demand. Cheviot lambs topped at £60.50 from LA&M Lambert of Brow Head, with Mules selling to £58, twice, from MK Robinson of Roundthwaite and JA&CA Gibson of Longwell. Horned lambs looking particularly well sold today, with Rough Fells topping the section at £45.00 from K&A Nicholson of Applegarth. An entry of just short of 2500 lambs forward for sale, selling to an overall market average of £49.81 for a complete clearance, of an entry that contained a high number of long keep and hill bred lambs. Machinery Sale - Saturday 4th November The November monthly sale of Machinery and Implements had an entry of 739 lots forward for the sale consisting just short of 300 large items on the yard and over 400 items of small machinery, implements, tools and garden equipment. Once again, a good backing of buyers and on lookers were present for the sale. As normal good quality items were eagerly bid for and in demand. The trade topped at £3,600 for a Massey Ferguson 675 1983 with loader tractor. A David Brown 996 with loader sold to £950. There was plenty of interest in livestock trailers at the sale and were eagerly bid for selling to a top of £2,600 for a 14ft Graham Edwards trailer with decks and a 12ft Bateson trailer selling to £1,000. Log splitters created plenty of interest especially being the right time of year, selling to a top of £890 with wood processor selling to £700. The small tools and implements continue to create plenty of interest and eagerly bid for.
Tuesday 31st October The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had an increased entry of 1500 forward this week, a mixed entry in terms of quality and finish of the lambs. The good quality Beltex lambs continued to sell in excess of 200p/kg selling to a top of 226p/kg from RHM & S Boyren of Hill Park, Ulverston. It was Beltex lambs that topped the market at £100 or 212p/kg from WS Burrow & Sons of Gilbratar Farm. Suffolk lambs topped at £95 from DM & D Cook of Smithy Green, Ulverston for heavy weight lambs, with good conformation. Heavy weight lambs selling towards £90. Once again, a good number of Mules in the market today topped at £78 for heavy weight lambs from RI Dixon of Low Newton, with 44kg Mule lambs selling to £76 from R Capstick and Son of Fell End. There was a smaller entry of 334 Cast Sheep forward this week. A larger number of big ewes forward sold to a much improved trade for good meated Continental, Suffolk and Mule ewes. Numerous pens of big meated Continental ewes sold in excess of £100 topping at £117 RT & ME Sutton of Crosscrake with Texel ewes and RG Blackburn of Chapel House to £114, all Texel ewes forward sold to an average of £79.40. Texel tups topped at £121 from TE, JS & SA Carruthers of Red Scar. Mule ewes sold to a top of £69 from RHM & S Boyren of Hill Park, Ulverston with a pen of 35 Mule ewes from JC Dunning of Low Chapel Farm. Horned tups topped at £70 and £64 for Dalesbred tups from CC & DA Fawcett of Holmecrest. Rough Fell ewes topped at £57 from GR Park & Sons Low Deepslack with well-fleshed Swaledale ewes selling to £47 from Baystone farms. Leaner types of hill ewes selling to a slightly sharper trade.
