Weekly Report and Newsletter - 7th March 2025 Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep & Sheep with Lambs. Monday 3rd March 2025. Prime Hoggs In buyer specification hoggs continued to sell at the recent high prices, with an SQQ of 344p/kg achieved today. JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore presented another well sort after consignment of Beltex cross hoggs selling to 417p/kg, with other pens at 409p/kg twice from the same home and 393p/kg from KA Purtill, Wigan. Other well finished continental standard weight hoggs were regularly 350p/kg to 380p/kg. Several pens of lighter weight hoggs met buyers approval, selling to 368p/kg for Texel cross from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. Other grass finished light weight hill bred hoggs were 310p/kg to 330p/kg. Heavy weight hoggs sold to 354p/kg for continental hoggs from Cardwell Farms, Stalmine. Other were generally 310p/kg to 320p/kg. Today’s sale topped at £184 for continental hoggs from Cardwell Farms, Stalmine with Texel cross to £180 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe and Beltex £176 from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore. Other standard weight hoggs were regularly £144 to £160. Pure hill bred hoggs sold to £171 for Cheviots, £153 Gritstones and £140 for Rough Fells. Cast Sheep A full row of cull ewes, saw a shortage of the best strongest sorts this week, those few which were forward sold to £216 for a pen of Charolais’s from JA Lambert, Out Rawcliffe who sold others at £204. The best first cross ewes sold to £187 from the same home, with Texel cross £174 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Others were £155 to £170, mediums £140 to £152, with the leaner end £120 to £135. The strongest Mules sold to £168 from P Metcalfe, Quernmore with others £140 to £150 and mediums £125 to £135. Pure hill ewes sold to £142 for Cheviots from Riverside Cottage, with Lonks to £136 from E Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale and Lleyn £108. Only a handful of horned ewes forward, being the leaner end selling to £70. Cull rams sold to £160 for continental with Swaledale’s to £98. Sheep with Lambs at Foot The opening sale of sheep with lambs at foot was greeted by an eager ringside of buyers keen to fill trailers, with many leaving empty hander or unable to fulfil orders. Today’s sale topped at £350 (£175 per life) for a Texel cross shearling with Beltex cross lamb from J Wills, Lancaster who sold similar families to £325 and two shears with twins to £330. A ring full of aged Mule ewes with twin Texel lambs from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe sold at £365. Older Cheviot Mule ewes with twin Texel lambs sold to £360 from P Metcalfe, Quernmore who also sold singles at £285. Please note this weekly sale will now commence at 11.15am. Entries for throughout March include: 60 Texel ewes with Texel cross lambs, 100 Cheviot Mules with Beltex cross lambs, 70 continental ewes twin Beltex cross lambs, 30 Mule ewes with Suffolk and Texel lambs and 150 Mules (2-4 Crop) 'flock dispersal'
