Lancaster Auction Mart: Farm Machinery Dispersal Sale on behalf of JG&KM German, Abbeystead, Saturday 21st January 2023.

North West Auctions had the pleasure of conducting the farm machinery dispersal sale on behalf of JG&KM German, Abbeystead following their retirement from farming. A large crowd of local and travelled buyers were in attendance with all items selling to their full value.

Several of items of interest included a Renault 90-34 4 wheel drive tractor complete with loader which went on to sell at £4900 going to East Yorkshire, the mobile sheep shower unit attracted much attention sold at £3900 finding a new home in Ireland with the Honda ATV staying local selling at £2400 and a David Brown 2 wheel drive tractor complete with loader selling for restoration at £1850. Farm machinery sold to £1700 for a Krone three rotor rake, a Marshall Rotor Spreader selling at £1550, a McHale bale slicer at £1000, cultivation discs at £900 and Malgar 90 tanker at £820. Livestock equipment saw rubber cow mats sell to £470 (for a pack of twenty), sheep dressing crate £420, cattle foot trimming crush £300 and IAE lamb creep feeder £280.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Ewes, Monday 23rd January 2023.

Prime Hoggs

An increased entry of 590 hoggs were forward which sold to a sharper trade of 233p/kg, to include a large proportion of upland hoggs and consigners sweepings ups. Heavy weight hoggs continue to meet large demand at Lancaster peaking at £149 from JE&J Pye & Son, Quernmore with others to £134. A consignment of heavy weight hoggs from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby sold to £148, £143, £140, £137, £136 and £133. Other leading prices saw the consignment of Texel and Suffolk hoggs from J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe sell to £127, £126, £125 three times and £124. Heavy weight Suffolks from Pilling Hall, Pilling peaked at £126. This was followed by the consignment from AG Butler, Hambleton selling to £125 twice, £124 twice, £123.50 and £123. The top pence per kilo of 285p/kg was consigned by AG Butler with a pair of Beltex’s. Plenty of pens of smarter bred commercial hoggs sold in the region of 270p/kg. Upland hoggs saw heavy weight Mule peak at £120 from JW Cornall & Sons, Bleasedale, Mashams to £118 from T&D Wright, Roeburndale East and WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with Leicesters achieving the same price from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Plenty of pens of well fleshed Mules were between £105 and £110.

Leading the way at Lancaster was a pen of heavy weight Mule ewes to £110 from JE&J Pye & Son, Quernmore followed by Continental x rams to £102 from J Burgh, Quernmore with Texel x ewes to £100 twice from PD Anderston, Scorton and R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep. Sale of all classes of Pigs, Tuesday 24th January 2023.

Pigs

A real shortage of prime pigs with an abundance of buyers in attendance with many leaving short of requirements. Prime pigs sold to a top price of £205 for pietrain x hoggs from J Stott Jnr, Kingsland closely followed by saddleback x hogs and gilets from BR Harrison, Windermere. Other prime pigs saw heavy weight gilts from M Allen, Carnforth sell to £160 and lighter weights to £148. Top p/kg was 211p/kg for prime gilts from BR Harrison, Windermere with other well bred and well finished prime pigs regularly 155p/kg – 180p/kg.

Culls-Cull sows sold £125 from AT Threlkeld, Satterthwaite with cull boars selling to £85 from MB Fawcett, Burton in Lonsdale.

Weaners-Gloucester Old Spot from MK&LK Whitley & Son, Harrogate sold to £38 with others at £35. White Weaners from C Dean & LJ Brennand sold to £40.

Prime Hoggs

The weekly sale of prime hoggs at Junction 36 had an increased entry of just shy of 1000 forward selling to an overall market average of 230p/kg. Hopper and inside feed hoggs demanded a premium with hoggs short of finish penalised on the market today. Junction 36 continues to demand a strong trade for heavy weight hoggs peaking at £166 and £158 for Continentals from PK&R Woof, Stainton whom sold others to £145. The consignment of heavy weight Texels from JB Airey, Kendal peaked at £156 purchased by Westmorland Services with other heavy weight hoggs from JB Airey to £156, £146 and £144. Heavy weight Suffolks sold to £145 from JE Read, Hutton Roof followed by £140 from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell and £137 from J&JA Burrow, Grayrigg. At £139 was 55kg Texel hoggs from FI&ME Little, Barrow Green whom sold the top price Mules at £129. Heavy

weight Cheviots peaked at £136 from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh. The trade peaked at 295p/kg for Beltex hoggs from AW&D Brown, Ulverston with plenty of pens of well-fed tidily bred Continental hoggs selling between 250275p/kg. Other leading prices saw upland hoggs sell to £116 for Mashams, £116 from JE Read, Hutton Roof. Swaledales sold to £111 from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston whom also sold other Swaledales to £100, Rough Fells sold to £98 from VR Guy, Tebay.

Cast Sheep

600 ewes were forward which sold to a similar trade to previous weeks. Texel ewes sold to £158 from PK&R Woof, Stainton with other Texels selling to £140 from D Wightman & A Mason, Dalton Hall. Meated Continental ewes were regularly selling at the £110-£125 mark. Mules sold to a top price of £110 from J Twigge, Grange Over Sands with other pens to £100 from TH Garnett & Son, Stank for a pen of twelve. The hill ewe trade was a shade sharper on the week with Cheviots selling to £116 from TE&J Waddsworth & Son, Sedgwick. Swaledales topped at £87 from FI&ME Little, Barrows Green with the best regularly at the £60-£70 mark. Rough Fells sold to a top of £86 form V Guy, Tebay. Herdwicks sold to £80 from AT Threlkeld, Satterthwaite.

Cast rams saw a top of £152 for Suffolks from Messrs Kippling, Greenholme. Texel rams sold to £122 from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Fortnightly Sale of Store Hoggs, Thursday 25th January 2023.

A typical January entry of store hoggs had 1162 sold to an overall market average of £61.85 with a mixed entry of short term and long term hoggs forward with buyers forward for all types. Short keep continental hoggs lead the way topping the market at £96 for Beltexs from BJ Bowness, Kendal and Texels to the same price from HM & J Clark, Millom. Other leading prices for Texel hoggs were £94.50, £92 & £90 from Holgate Caravans, £93, £90 & £89 from B & D Willison & Son, Levens with others to £91 twice from JJ & MA Park & Son, Heslington and D Wightman & A Mason, Burton with plenty of others selling in the mod to late eighties with medium keeps in the region of the seventy pound mark with others depending on size and quality. Upland hoggs peaked at £81 for Mules from Coward Brothers, Kirkby in Furness with other pens to £78 from B & D Willison & Son, Levens with pens of strongish mules in the early seventies. The next sale of Store Hoggs on Thursday 9th February will include the February sale of in lamb breeding sheep. This sale will include a consignment of 60 Mule Gimmer Hoggs run dry from EI, EA & TW Wilson, Guides Farm. Claiming date – Sale of 120 In lamb Mule Gimmer Hoggs due 27th April to Texel & Beltex from EI, EA & TW Wilson, Guides Farm.

Dairy Cattle

Today’s sale topped at £2600 for the 1st prize heifer ‘Pennie Poppy 1651’ from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale who sold the 2nd prize heifer ‘Pennine Peace 866’ for £2450. Other pedigree heifers sold to £2500 for Wyredale Jones

Bettina 154 from MJ&H Atkinson, Quernmore. New calved cows sold to £1820 for the 1st prize cow being a 3rd calver from R&K Jenksinon, Pilling who sold 5th calver cows at £1500.

A fresh 3rd calved jersey cow from JM Simpson, Underbarrow achieved £1300.

Store Cattle

The weekly sale of store cattle at Lancaster saw just over 200 through the ring with a trade beyond vendors expectations. All steers forward averaged £1322 with heifers at £1244. No real show stoppers today but hitting top spot was a single Aberdeen Angus steer selling to £1760 from W&A Cardwell, Stalmine. Not far behind also for Aberdeen Angus steers was PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead at £1680 for a pair. L Parsons & Sons, Levens with their usually good run of cattle topped at £1640 also for a pair of Aberdeen Angus steers. All Angus steers today averaged £1240 which included a large percentage of younger cattle. Limousin steers saw a top of £1680 from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale with H Chapman & Son, Middleton at £1490 for a pair. Charolais steers saw A&E Clarkson, Thurnham at £1400 with others from the same good home to £1340. J Prest & Son, Bay Horse had their usual run of strong steers topping at £1600 for Herefords with other Herefords at £1480 from J tattersall, Preston. British Blue stores saw H Chapman & Son, Middleton to £1570 for a pair with BN Greenwood, Catterall close behind at £1560. All British Blue stores today averaged £1378. A trio of Blonde steers from regular Lancaster supporters JB Moore, Grange Over Sands sold to £1490.

Dairy bred steers today topped at £1470 for Friesians from L Parsons & Sons, Levens with others at £1200 from J Lamb, Glasson.

Store heifers saw no let up in trade topping at £1520 from WA Hodgson, Whinfell for a Charolais with others from the same home at £1440. L Parsons & Sons, Levens continued to have a good day with Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1510. K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel were not far behind at £1500 for their quality run of cattle with a pen of

five British Blue heifers from the same good home at £1480 three times a with others at £1430 and £1420 twice. More store cattle are required next week, as vendors are encouraged to take advantage of the current demand for cattle.

OTM Cattle

Another strong entry of 120 cull cows continue to sell to exceptional fast trade with an overall market average of 184p/kg, with over 2/3 of the sale being dairy bred cows. Heavy well fleshed beef cows sold to 264p/kg for a Simmental cow from C & AJ Woodhouse, Millom who sold others at 249.5p/kg. Other beef cows sold to 239.5p/kg for Aberdeen Angus x from JJ & J Towers, Lowick. Limousin to 217p/kg from J M Kelsall & Son, Quernmore. Other beef cows regularly selling between 185-205p/kg, and a keen interest in those suitable for further finishing. Top grossing beef cow today was a Simmental from C & AJ Woodhouse, Millom achieving £1564.

Dairy cows sold to a top price of 241p/kg for a young Holstein Friesian from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham who others at 214.5p/kg from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with other heavy weight Holstein Friesian at 207.5p/kg from M&E Forshaw, Longridge. Medium dairy cows regularly between 170-185p/kg. Top grossing dairy cow was Holstein Friesian from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale achieving £1540 closely followed by WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham at £1545 and R&A Jolleys, Cabus at £1532.

OTM heifers sold to top of 259.5p/kg for a Limousin from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton with dairy heifers selling to 214.5p/k for a Holstein Friesian from WG Farms, Cockerham. Top grossing OTM heifer was a Hereford from PD Pye, Over Wyresdale at £1550.

OTM steers sold to 249.5p/kg for Abeerdeen Angus x from S & M Carter, Witherslack who sold others at £1452.

Cull Bulls sold to 214.5p/kg for a young Meuse-Rhine-Issel from Barlow Bros, Croston with other beef bulls at 211.5p/kg for a British Blue from T A Chapman & Son, Kendal. Beef bulls sold to £2036 for a British Blue from T A Chapman & Son, Kendal. With dairy bulls to £1346 for a Friesian from G R Park & Sons, Whinfell.
