Weekly Report & Newsletter - 25th September 2026 L&K Group submits full planning application for livestock auction mart and commercial development at Galgate The new Junction 33 site will house a state-of-the-art auction mart, commercial units and converted farm buildings, securing the future of livestock auctioneering in North Lancashire. L&K Group has submitted a full planning application to Lancaster City Council (LCC) for a major new livestock auction mart and commercial development on land it owns at Junction 33 of the M6, near Galgate. The application, prepared with renowned local architects Mason Gillibrand, follows twelve months of masterplanning and consultation on land to the west of the A6 that L&K Group has owned since December 2017. Now validated by LCC, the full application is available to view via the LCC planning portal. If approved, the development will see the Group's livestock auctioneering operations relocate from its current Wyresdale Road site to the new J33 site, alongside significant new commercial space for local agriculture-based businesses. What the application includes The proposals cover three main elements:
A new auction mart, on land west of the A6, replacing the existing Wyresdale Road site. At around 7,500 sq metres, the building will include auction rings, penning, administration o ices, a large café, lettable areas and a conference facility, in a similar style to the Group's existing J36 development. The scheme provides for parking for 200 vehicles at the front of the building and livestock trailer parking for 130 vehicles at the rear.
Commercial space, comprising a series of new units similar to those already supporting local agriculture-based businesses at J36. Six new letting units, ranging from 600 to 825 sq metres, will be built with secure compounds and parking, generating significant rental income for the Group.
Lane House Farm, where the existing farmhouse and stone barns on site will be refurbished and converted into residential and o ice accommodation, respectively, with 35 adjacent parking spaces for the o ice units.

In turn, the Wyresdale Road site will be freed up for residential development – an outcome LCC has also welcomed, helping to meet local housing need while moving mart tra ic away from Lancaster's urban centre and onto major arterial routes. The plans have been presented to council o icers and councillors as part of the Planning Performance Agreement process, where they were "positively and enthusiastically received." Investment and timescale L&K Group anticipates a decision on the application by the end of 2026. Subject to planning approval and the appointment of contractors, work on site is expected to begin in mid-2028, with the auction mart itself completed in the first half of 2030. Livestock auctioneering operations would then transition from Wyresdale Road to the new J33 site during 2030. The Group estimates the total cost of the development at £12.1m, covering road access, utilities, site levelling and landscaping, construction of the auction mart and car parking, site preparation and services for the commercial units and the refurbishment of Lane House Farm. Crucially, it demonstrates our ongoing commitment to investing equally in high-calibre infrastructure across both J33 and J36, supported by matching management and operational strength at both locations. We anticipate a decision on the application by, at the latest, the end of the year. This all modern meat machine of a ram found its new home with D & DW Prickett, Farleton. M Prince, Derbyshire sold his usual quality consignment, topping at 750gns and selling to Messrs ER Holliday, Wigton. Shearling Average - £243.16 Ewe Average - £210 Strong trade for Shearlings, particularly Mules, at J36 Kendal with buyers certainly wanting to buy Mule Gimmer Shearlings before it’s too late. Topping today’s trade were the Su olks from Josie Smith who topped both the Shearlings and the Ewes, with her Shearlings making £480 and the Ewes made £400. Texel Shearlings were more selective but the pens that were picked on flew to the £300 mark, with top price going to JA Chapman making £315. Mules were the dominant number of sheep today with 500 available to buy. Mules averaged £246.28 and topped out at £305 for a pen of 12 from T Sharp, Stakes Moss, the same firm also had a pen at £280. Mule Ewes averaged £260.34 and topped at £285 from John & Lizzy Law, and Trevor Sharp. Another successful breeding sale at J36 as the breeding sheep season continues. Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep, Monday 21st September 2026 PRIME LAMBS More lambs forward this morning at Lancaster, with all classes meeting a firm trade to average 333p/kg for lambs ranging from 31kg to 62kg, with a sale SQQ of 339p/kg. PJ & ES Rogerson, Appleby making a worthwhile trip down by taking the overall top price of £216 for Smart Beltex and Texel-cross lambs, with others from this good home achieving £200 and £192. Lancaster regular John Twigge achieved £190 for Beltex, with Eddie Ridding, Selside, also selling Texel lambs to £192. Smart lightweight Beltex lambs from TR Gorst, Bay Horse, sold to £152 at 39kg. John Twigge topped the pence-per-kilo section at 452p/kg for Beltex lambs. More lambs are required next Monday at Lancaster to satisfy buyers demand. Friday 25th September 2026 REARING CALVES/WEANED CALVES Lancaster calves – in the money 70 calves in at Lancaster this morning, with a cracking trade across the board. Topping the sale was a Blue Bull from GP Stott, achieving £940. Others from the same good home to £910 and £900, twice. JR Newsham & Son weren’t far behind at £890 for a Month old Hereford Bull. Heifer Calves sold to £900 from AT Burrow & Son for Blues, with the same firm selling Angus close behind at £860.
