LONELINESS AMONG MIGRANTS IN LONDON

EDITORIAL Bo-Yu Chen

At some point last year, whilst riding on the tube, I found an article in a discarded copy of The Economist about loneliness in London. This article indicated that Britain is the ‘loneliness capital of Europe’. In fact, strong feelings of loneliness formed my first impressions of London when I started my new life here one and a half years ago. As an international student, at the beginning of term I was very excited about trying new things. All the while, I felt quite frustrated with language barriers and cultural differences, which hindered my access to information and ability to communicate my ideas with my class as well as in daily life. Sometimes the feeling of loneliness was even more harrowing, especially when I missed my family in Taiwan. All I wanted was to talk to them, but due to the 8 hour time difference they would already be in bed on the other side of the Earth. Fortunately, I wasn’t alone. I moved into a flat with my Taiwanese friend and became friends with 04

05

my other flatmates too. Gradually I started to feel less lonely, and grew more curious about how other people experience and cope with loneliness in London. Loneliness is a growing problem in metropolitan society. According to research by the British charity The Forum, loneliness and social isolation have serious negative impacts on our health, such as increasing the risk of premature death by 30%, putting in on par with obesity and heavy smoking. Furthermore, it is also one of the toughest challenges facing migrants in London. I want to discover more about loneliness among migrants, and get a greater understanding of their experiences and feelings. Using this zine I want to illustrate the problems with loneliness in London, through a combination of informative statistics and insightful interviews conducted with migrants in the city. How does loneliness affect us in our day to day lives, and what can we learn from it?

About the interviews Loneliness is a subjective feeling and is sometime to describe in words. Baring this in mind, I asked all the interviewees to try and express their feelings of loneliness visually through a sketch. These sketches form the basis of my own illustrations in which I seek to empathise with my interviewees, and through geometric abstraction find a commonality between our experiences.

It affects me physically, as I suffer from an eating disorder. I try to deal with it by “feeling and healing” and trying to be easy on myself, telling my friends I’m proud of them and confront my inner vulnerability. You always learn something. What’s the loneliest thing from your points of view? Not have anyone to talk to. If someone is deciding to move to London alone for the first time whatadvice would you give to them in terms of adapting to the new environment? To not stress out about the rhythm of the city, allow yourself enough time to feel comfortable in your new space and meeting new people. Also have a ritual of little things that make you happy
