PALAVRAS QUE CRIAM MUNDOS
ENTRE BARA E ASSAH
Ha palavras que nomeiam aquilo que existe. Outras inauguram possibilidades de existencia.
Between Bara and Assah What does it mean to create? The Hebrew language, in all its depth, offers us two words that open distinct paths into this question: Bara and Assah. Bara is Divine creation. It is the word with which the Torah begins: Bereshit bara Elokim — "In the beginning, G-d created." Jewish tradition understands Bara as yesh me'ayin: bringing existence forth from non-existence. Where there was no matter, no form, no color, G-d brought a world into being. This is an exclusively Divine capacity. Assah, by contrast, means to make. It is the language of action, transformation, and human creation. The human being does not create from nothing. We receive a world that already exists: matter, nature, color, sound, words, experiences. And from what we have been given, we transform. At first glance, we might imagine Bara to be infinitely greater. And indeed, the grandeur of Divine creation is beyond comparison. Yet Jewish tradition invites us to discover within Assah a dimension of its own that is nothing short of extraordinary. G-d did not create a world merely to be contemplated. He created a physical world and placed the human being within it not simply as a spectator, but as a participant. He entrusted us with matter, intelligence, sensitivity, freedom, and talent — and invited us to make. To choose. To build. To transform. The same material can be used to destroy or to build. The same hands can wound or heal. The same physical world can conceal the Divine or become a place where the Divine Presence is revealed. It is here that Assah becomes more than making: it becomes responsibility. And it becomes partnership. The Torah tells us that G-d asked the people to build a Sanctuary, saying: "They shall make for Me a Sanctuary, and I shall dwell among them." The finite and limited human being was given the extraordinary possibility of taking the physical elements of this world and transforming them into a dwelling place for the Infinite. Perhaps art is one of the most beautiful expressions of this encounter. The artist does not create matter itself, but discovers possibilities within it. The artist receives color, form, texture, language, memory, and space — and, through a singular vision, reveals something that had never before been seen in quite that way. Transforming what was received, the artist gives something new back to the world. Between Bara and Assah, then, lies a space of encounter. On one side, G-d, who creates and sustains existence. On the other, the human being, who receives this world and is invited to transform it. We do not create as G-d creates. But we can become His partners. We can take matter and fill it with meaning. We can reveal, within a profoundly physical world, something that transcends it. Through our choices, our actions, and our talents, we can make this world a better place — a place capable of holding more beauty, more purpose, and more Divine presence. Perhaps all of this was already contained in the words with which the Torah concludes the account of Creation: "Asher bara Elokim la'assot" — «Which G-d created to make.» (Genesis 2:3) G-d created. And in creating, He left room for the human being to make. Perhaps this is precisely where Bara and Assah meet: in the world we receive from G-d, and in what we choose to make of it.
Bara é a criação Divina. É a palavra que inaugura a Torá: Bereshit bara Elokim — “No princípio, D'us criou”. Confiou-lhe matéria, inteligência, sensibilidade, liberdade e talento — e o convidou a fazer. A escolher. A construir. A transformar. (Gênesis 2:3) D'us criou. WORDS THAT CREATE WORLDS
BETWEEN BARA AND ASSAH Some words name what already exists. Others bring new possibilities of existence into being. Bara and Assah belong to that rare category of words. In the Hebrew tradition, bara designates the act of creation attributed exclusively to the Divine. Assah belongs to the human realm of making, the creative act that transforms, organizes, and gives new meaning to what already exists. Between these two verbs lies one of humanity's oldest, and still most urgent, questions: what does it mean to create? Every act of creation changes the world, however subtly. A gesture reshapes a relationship. An image reorders memory. An idea alters the future before it even takes form. Creation unfolds through matter and language, through science and art, through technique and imagination. Every creative act expands what the world itself can become. It is from this horizon that Between Bara and Assah emerges. Artists from diverse backgrounds, practices, and artistic languages share a common commitment to exploring the nature of creation. Their materials, processes, references, and poetic approaches differ widely, yet each work retains its singular voice while contributing to a shared reflection. No work answers the question once and for all. Each creation extends the one before it and prepares the ground for the next, forming a constellation of voices engaged in an ongoing dialogue. Rather than offering definitive answers, the exhibition keeps its central question deliberately open, reminding us that creation always exceeds any definition we attempt to give it. Creating is among the most profoundly human of gestures because it transforms the world long before it transforms it completely. Every work begins before matter and continues long after it. Between bara, which brings forth, and assah, which carries creation forward, lies the space where humanity responds to the gift of existence through the act of creating. It is within that space that Between Bara and Assah takes place. Adriana Scartaris Curator 4

THE EIGHTEEN APERTURES Every act of creation begins with an opening. Before form, there is possibility. Before an answer, there is a question. Before a path, there is an intuited direction. The apertures gathered in this chapter arise from this intermediate place, where something is not yet fully defined, yet has already begun to reveal itself. The eighteen words that follow do not seek to explain the works presented in this exhibition. Nor do they attempt to summarize the artists' thinking. They are invitations. Each offers a way of paying attention, an attitude toward life, a way of approaching what we call creation. Listening. Verb. Order. Structure. Surrender. Perception. Trust. Control. Balance. Care. Blessing. Transmission. Inheritance. Belonging. Reciprocity. Choice. Pause. Almost. Some of these words point toward gestures. Others describe states of awareness. Others still speak of the relationships we establish with the world, with one another, and with all that surrounds us. Together they trace a possible path between Bara and Assah, between the originating impulse that makes reality possible and the continuous work of giving form, sustaining, caring for, and carrying it forward. Each aperture opens onto a different landscape. Some lead us toward origins. Others draw us closer to responsibility, coexistence, or memory. None offers a conclusion. All remain open. Perhaps this is one of the deepest conditions of creation. What truly matters rarely reveals itself all at once. It first appears as a small opening. Then as a question. Later, as a path. And it is through that opening that we enter.

FIRST MOVEMENT The formation of consciousness
Every act of creation begins long before the gesture. Before building, naming, or transforming anything, there is a gradual process of recognition. We learn to listen, to distinguish, to name, to organize, and to perceive relationships. Little by little, what once seemed dispersed begins to acquire an inner form. The six apertures that follow accompany this movement. They speak of the passage between the unknown and what gradually becomes conscious. Between our first encounter with the world and our ability to understand it lies a path shaped by attention, language, structure, openness, sensitivity, and perception. It is along this path that we begin to recognize who we are.
10
Aprendemos a ouvir, a distinguir, a nomear, a organizar e a reconhecer relações.
Long before we learn to speak, we learn to listen. We hear rhythms before we understand meanings. We hear a voice before its words, a presence before its image, silence before its answer. Listening is an act of receptivity. It calls for less assertion and more openness, less certainty and more attention. Much of life is spent trying to respond. Creation, however, begins elsewhere. It begins when we interrupt the impulse to fill the world with our own voices and become capable of perceiving what is already before us. Every act of creation begins with an encounter. Every encounter begins with listening.
12
Existem palavras que descrevem. Outras transformam.
Some words describe. Others transform. Over time, we discover that naming something also establishes a new reality. When an experience, an idea, or a feeling finds language, it becomes recognizable. What once seemed diffuse begins to take shape. What had remained unnamed finds its place within consciousness. The verb brings thought and reality into dialogue. It allows intention to find form, perception to find language, and possibility to find existence. Every act of creation passes through that rare moment when something ceases to inhabit possibility alone and begins to take its place in the world.
13
Order is often mistaken for rigidity. Yet the most complex forms of life depend precisely on the ability to organize differences without eliminating them. A forest, a body, a constellation, or a city reveal that complexity does not arise from the absence of order, but from the richness of the relationships that compose it. Each element occupies a place, participates in a whole, and contributes to something greater than itself. Order does not erase diversity. It makes its continuity possible. To create is to recognize relationships. To bring elements closer together, to perceive patterns, to understand affinities. More often than not, order does not need to be invented. It simply needs to be perceived.
14
Raízes permanecem sob a terra. Ossos permanecem sob a pele.
Not everything that sustains a form can be seen. Roots remain beneath the earth. Bones remain beneath the skin. Ideas, values, and memories also create invisible structures that guide choices, relationships, and ways of inhabiting the world. Much of what constitutes us remains unseen even when its effects can already be perceived. Structures do more than support weight. They make growth, transformation, and continuity possible. The more alive a structure is, the greater its ability to adapt without losing its integrity. To create is to participate in the construction of that which will remain when the gesture itself is no longer present.
15
Surrender requires a particular kind of courage. Some of the most important experiences in life arrive as intuition, premonition, or mystery. They do not present themselves fully formed. They offer no guarantees. Understanding comes later, when it comes at all. Surrender does not eliminate doubt. It allows us to move forward despite it. There is courage in recognizing the limits of what we know and remaining open to what we do not yet understand. Creation requires this rare form of trust. The willingness to continue when it is still impossible to see the full shape of what is yet to come.
16
Seeing is different from perceiving. We see what stands before our eyes. We perceive what acquires meaning. Perception does not depend solely on the senses. It arises from attention, experience, memory, and the ability to establish relationships between what we observe and what we already know. Two people may look at the same landscape and find different things within it. The world may remain the same, while each gaze carries a distinct history. To perceive is to participate actively in the construction of meaning. Much of life remains invisible until we become capable of recognizing it.
17
SECOND MOVEMENT Human action upon the world
Recognition is only the beginning. At some point, every understanding calls for a response. What we perceive begins to guide choices, influence relationships, and transform the way we participate in the world. Consciousness ceases to be mere observation and becomes action. The six apertures that follow accompany this movement. They speak of the trust required to begin a journey, the desire to intervene in reality, the search for balance, the importance of care, of that which we receive without producing, and of the responsibility to pass forward what we have received. To create is also to accept consequences. Every gesture leaves new traces, establishes connections, opens new paths, and participates in the construction of possible futures. It is along this path that consciousness becomes commitment.
18
The most important paths rarely begin with guarantees. More often than not, we move forward sustained by something both more fragile and more powerful: trust. Not the certainty that everything will work out, but the willingness to continue even when part of the path remains unknown. It is precisely there that its strength reveals itself. To trust is to accept an inevitable measure of risk. Every friendship, every discovery, every act of creation, and every meaningful change requires this gesture. There is always a moment when we stop analyzing possibilities and choose to walk. Creation requires this quiet courage. The ability to keep moving when only the next step can be seen.
20
Desde cedo aprendemos a organizar, medir, prever e antecipar.
From an early age, we learn to organize, measure, predict, and anticipate. Much of human experience has been shaped by this desire to understand the world and reduce uncertainty. Control has become a way of creating a sense of security in the face of what appears unstable. This impulse has allowed us to build cities, expand knowledge, and transform landscapes. At the same time, it reminds us that not everything responds to our will. There are forces, events, and circumstances that remain beyond any attempt at mastery. Creation requires a constant dialogue between intention and unpredictability. Knowing when to act because something depends on us, and knowing when to accept what does not. It is between these two movements that balance becomes necessary.
21
A vida, porém, raramente permanece imóvel.
We often imagine balance as a state of stability. Life, however, rarely remains still. Everything is subject to change, tension, encounters, and transformation. To find balance does not mean eliminating these forces, but learning to live with them. A body finds balance through countless small adjustments. The same is true of choices, relationships, and projects. Very often, what appears secondary is precisely what sustains the whole. Creation requires this constant attention. The ability to recognize tensions, adjust direction, and preserve what truly matters. Balance is not a destination. It is a practice.
22
Not everything that holds value draws attention to itself. Much of life depends on gestures that are discreet, repeated, and almost invisible. To care is to dedicate time, presence, and attention to what might otherwise be neglected or forgotten. It is to recognize importance where many see only a detail. What we care for tends to grow, strengthen, and endure. Relationships, knowledge, memories, and projects require more than intention. They require continuity. Care transforms interest into commitment and brings desire closer to responsibility. To create is also to care. For what we wish to build, for what we wish to preserve, and for what we entrust to the future.
23
Not everything that transforms a life can be produced. There are encounters, opportunities, affections, discoveries, and learnings that come to us without any claim to their origin. Very often, we recognize their value only later. To recognize a blessing is to understand that not everything arises from will, effort, or planning. Some of the most valuable things in existence also depend on our ability to welcome what is offered to us. Creation requires this openness. The willingness to receive, to care for, and to pass on what once came to us.
24
Few things arrive in the future exactly as they once were. Even so, much of what we receive continues to exist because it finds new voices, new gestures, and new paths. To transmit does not mean to repeat. It means to receive something, recognize its value, and allow it to continue forward. Every act of transmission involves care, interpretation, and responsibility. What is transmitted never remains identical to its point of origin, yet it continues to preserve something of where it began. To create is also to participate in this continuity. We receive, transform, and entrust to others what once came to us.
25
THIRD MOVEMENT Shared life
No existence unfolds in isolation. What we receive, build, and transform finds continuity in the relationships we establish throughout life. We are shaped by inheritances, recognize ourselves through belonging, are transformed through encounters, and assume responsibilities through the choices we make. The six apertures that follow accompany this journey. They speak of what connects us to those who came before us, to those who walk beside us, and to those who will come after us. They speak of the responsibilities we share, the bonds we cultivate, and what we choose to carry forward. To create is also to participate in a story larger than one’s own life. It is along this path that what we receive, transform, and offer finds continuity.
26
TERCEIRO MOVIMENTO Vida compartilhada
We enter the world accompanied by what others have built before us, generation after generation. Before making any choice, we have already received a language, stories, knowledge, symbols, affections, and ways of understanding the world. Much of who we are has been shaped by people we will never meet. To receive an inheritance does not mean living in the past. It means recognizing that our existence participates in a larger continuity. We inherit achievements, questions, memories, and responsibilities. Some will be preserved. Others will be transformed. To create is to add something of our own to what has been entrusted to us. Every inheritance remains alive when someone chooses to carry its continuity forward.

To belong is to recognize oneself as part of something larger without losing what makes us unique. The richest forms of coexistence emerge when differences find ways to live together without surrendering what makes them singular. Belonging does not require uniformity. It arises from the recognition that diversity and connection can inhabit the same space. Throughout life, we take part in families, communities, cultures, and histories that contribute to the formation of who we are. At the same time, we also help transform them. To belong is to participate in an ongoing construction between what we receive and what we offer. To create is to take part in something greater without surrendering one’s own singularity.
29
Poucas coisas importantes florescem sozinhas. A reciprocidade nasce desse movimento.
Few important things flourish on their own. Throughout life, we are continually transformed by encounters. We learn from those who came before us, grow alongside those who walk beside us, and leave traces in those with whom we share our lives. Every relationship alters, expands, and returns something that did not exist before it. Reciprocity arises from this movement. It is not a matter of equivalence or repayment, but of recognizing that every form of coexistence generates mutual influence. What we offer also transforms us. To create is to participate in this continuous movement between giving and receiving, between listening and responding, between leaving a mark and allowing oneself to be marked.
30
Not everything happens when we want it to. There are processes that mature slowly, encounters that arrive at the right moment, and answers that reveal themselves only when we are ready to understand them. Time does more than determine the duration of things. It also shapes their meaning. We often try to anticipate what is yet to come or prolong what we wish to preserve. Yet much of life unfolds according to a rhythm beyond our control. Learning to recognize that rhythm is itself a form of wisdom. To create is to understand that every beginning, every season of waiting, and every fulfillment has its own time.
31
Not every transformation happens through movement. There are moments when stopping becomes just as important as acting. Pause does not interrupt meaning. It allows us to rediscover it. To regain perspective, reorder priorities, and draw closer to what is often lost in the speed of everyday life. We live surrounded by stimuli, tasks, and urgencies. Pause creates a necessary distance between ourselves and the things that occupy us. Within that interval, we begin to notice what had previously gone unseen. Creation also requires pauses. It is within them that time ceases to be a measure and becomes an experience once again.
32
Some of the most important experiences in life never fully come to an end, nor do they ever reach a final conclusion. We do not understand everything. We do not complete everything. No form of knowledge, creation, or accomplishment reaches a definitive and unchanging state. There is always something beyond what we are able to name, build, or fully comprehend. To create is to accept this human condition. To recognize that no work can ever fully contain what made it possible. Between what has been realized and what may still come into being, there remains a small yet fertile distance. It is there that we continue to create.

Vitória Barros Marabá, Pará, Brasil | Geographer and visual artist I am a visual artist and geographer. My practice is shaped by the Amazon rainforest, water, and the impact of human activity on ecosystems. Through painting, photography, and sculpture, I seek to deepen awareness of the living world and of our responsibility to protect it. In 2002, I founded an art gallery dedicated to cultivating audiences and fostering dialogue among artists, educators, students, and cultural practitioners. I participated in the Bienal das Amazônias with the public artwork Red Trees and have developed art and education projects for more than two decades.
I sought to create a tree made of light, water, and sound. The Menorah became its roots, trunk, and canopy, while the tubes turned into pathways to what usually remains unheard. By leaning in and listening, visitors encounter the sounds of the planets and, perhaps, a reminder that creation begins by connecting the visible with the invisible. 34
Nature has been at the heart of my artistic practice for many years. Throughout this journey, I have developed a body of work inspired by natural forms using PVC pipes and fittings, materials more commonly associated with urban infrastructure. I am interested in bringing these seemingly distant worlds together, revealing how life depends not only on the forests we see, but also on the invisible networks that make them possible. For Bara and Assah, this investigation took on a new dimension. The Menorah emerged as a way of thinking about creation, light, and knowledge, while the tree remained a central element of my practice. Gradually, the two merged into a single form. The incorporation of planetary sounds further expanded the work, transforming it into an invitation to listen. Bringing one's ear close to the piece establishes a connection between nature, matter, the cosmos, and imagination, suggesting that creation can also begin by listening to what normally lies beyond the reach of our senses.
35
Some works are built through the accumulation of materials. Others are shaped by an idea. In The Listening of the Word, Vitória Barros brings together forms that, throughout human history, have served to carry something essential. The tree carries sap, the Menorah carries light, the pipes carry water, and the sounds of the planets carry traces of celestial bodies that have remained in motion for billions of years. Each element shares this same purpose of transmission, allowing forms drawn from different times and realms of knowledge to become part of a single composition. As the opening work of the exhibition, it proposes a gesture that precedes interpretation itself: listening. Nothing functions as illustration or ornament. Every form belongs to a chain of transmission that brings matter, knowledge, and sensory experience into relation. By placing an ear close to the structure, visitors complete that journey and become part of it. Within Words That Create Worlds: Between Bara and Assah, the work suggests that every act of creation begins with a particular kind of attention. Before the word comes listening. Before the name comes the willingness to recognize what is already there, waiting to be perceived.

Iolanda Teixeira
Lisboa, Portugal | Visual artist
I live in Lisbon, where digital art has become the primary medium of my practice. I am interested in the traces urban life leaves on the way we see, communicate, and make sense of the world. Drawing on graphic structures, visual fragments, and references from contemporary culture, I create compositions that transform the experience of the city into images. My work seeks to reveal the relationships, patterns, and tensions that often go unnoticed in everyday life.
I am drawn to that rare moment when language ceases to describe the world and begins to create it.
For Bara and Assah, I was especially interested in the relationship between language and creation. Returning to the opening verses of Genesis, I found myself revisiting a question that has accompanied me for many years: how can language bring reality into being? Before matter, before landscape, before the human figure, there is a voice that names, and in naming, brings things into existence. From that question, I sought to create a visual sequence that would not illustrate events, but instead follow the movement of creation itself. The language of comics proved to be a particularly fertile medium for this exploration, through its ability to weave together time, fragmentation, and continuity. Each image emerged as an attempt to make visible the passage from word to form, from what is spoken into what begins to exist.
39
Tudo começa com uma frase. Uma frase curta. Poucas palavras.
It all begins with a sentence. A short sentence. Just a few words. A statement capable of crossing centuries without losing its power to generate images.Iolanda Teixeira draws on ten passages from the story of Creation to follow the journey of a word as it leaves the realm of language and begins to take form. Each work emerges from that transition, a place where sound, writing, thought, and image come to inhabit the same surface. From there, divisions, connections, rhythms, expansions, and compositions unfold and seem to grow before our eyes. As the series progresses, the initial emptiness gradually becomes inhabited. Lines break, gather, and multiply. Structures begin to evoke cities, living organisms, constellations, and maps. Each composition retains the energy of something still coming into being, as though matter itself remembered the instant when a word first found a place to exist and, in doing so, opened the possibility of a new world.

Clara Afonso
Clara Afonso
Castelo Branco, Portugal | Multidisciplinary fine artist
I am a Portuguese visual artist whose practice is rooted in abstraction, exploring themes of contemplation, the mystery of creation, and the spiritual dimension of human experience. For more than thirty-five years, I devoted myself to teaching the arts while maintaining an active exhibition practice, participating in international biennials and exhibitions across several countries. My work seeks to reveal relationships that lie beyond immediate perception, bringing art, nature, and inner experience into dialogue.
Every form arises from a deeper order that precedes it.

In incorporating phyllotaxis into this work, I became interested in the relationship between an order that seems to exist independently of us and the human gesture that recognizes, interprets, and transforms it. I see in that encounter a question that has accompanied me for many years: what is given to us, and what we choose to make of it. Painting became the place where these two forces converge, suggesting that creation is also a dialogue with structures that existed long before us.
My practice has long inhabited a realm of abstraction shaped by the invisible, contemplation, and spiritual experience. The challenge of this work was to find a structure capable of giving material form to that dimension without resorting to representation. Phyllotaxis emerged as that possibility, revealing an underlying order in nature, where growth, expansion, and organization follow principles that precede visible form. By incorporating this geometry into the painting, I sought to bring intuition and structure, gesture and calculation, into conversation, allowing qualities that shape the emergence of living forms to coexist on a single surface. 43
This work is built around an enduring question: what, after all, do we create?
Clara Afonso's painting grows out of an abstract investigation that predates the incorporation of phyllotaxis. Here, geometry is neither the point of departure nor a structure imposed upon the composition. It appears instead as an act of recognition. By identifying in nature a principle capable of engaging with questions already present in her practice, the artist brings together two distinct gestures: observing and making.

The superimposed pattern found in flowers, seeds, and leaves introduces a subtle tension between discovery and invention. Part of this structure belongs to no one. Part of it belongs entirely to the artist. Between these two conditions, the work draws close to the conceptual core of Bara and Assah. Not every act of creation begins from emptiness. More often, it begins when we recognize an order that has always been there and, from it, create new meanings, new relationships, and new ways of seeing.

Dudi Neri

My practice brings together digital art, artificial intelligence, and contemporary creative processes to explore matter, light, and forms in transformation. I am interested in creating images that inhabit the threshold between the organic and the mineral, between the microscopic and the landscape, revealing imagined geologies where scale dissolves and matter seems to acquire a life of its own.
46
When I first encountered the theme Words That Create Worlds: Between Bara and Assah, my initial question was how a practice rooted in matter could engage with an exhibition grounded in language. My work usually begins with mineral structures, imagined organisms, and landscapes that inhabit an indeterminate space between geology and life. This time, however, I found myself looking toward the origin of those forms.
A obra surgiu dessa aproximação.
As I explored the concepts of Bara and Assah, I began to think of creation as something that takes place before classification. Before the stone, the shell, the cell, or the names we give them. I am drawn to that moment when matter has not yet fully resolved itself and multiple futures remain possible. The work emerged from that inquiry, an observation of what is on the verge of coming into being, yet does not fully belong to any known category.
Procuro a vida antes do nome. I seek life before its name.
The process began with an investigation into mineral structures, crystalline formations, and organisms that exist across different scales of nature. As the images took shape, I realized that my interest no longer lay simply in observing these references, but in the moments when they ceased to be identifiable. I began creating compositions in which rock, cell, shell, and landscape coexist without defined boundaries, as though they were different manifestations of the same underlying matter.
The use of digital tools and artificial intelligence allowed me to expand this exploratory process, testing unexpected relationships between forms, textures, and structures. The work became truly my own through the selection, editing, and construction of the final image. The challenge was to preserve a constant tension between recognition and estrangement, allowing each element to remain at once familiar and unfamiliar. It was within that interval that the work found its final form.
47

In Life Before Its Name, Dudi Neri leads the eye into a realm where familiar classifications begin to lose their stability. The forms that inhabit the work oscillate between organism and mineral, anatomy and landscape, never fully settling into any one of these conditions. Shells, cells, crystals, landforms, and microscopic structures appear to share a common origin, as though we were witnessing matter still searching for its own principles of organization. The artist constructs a visual universe in which scale no longer offers certainty. What first appears to be a geological formation reveals itself as living tissue; what seems to be an organism may just as easily be read as cartography, fossil, or constellation. In dialogue with the concepts of Bara and Assah, the work arrives at a fundamental question: what exists before it has a name? Rather than representing recognizable forms, Dudi investig ates the moment when multiple possibilities remain open and matter has yet to assume a definitive identity. Creation appears here not as a completed event, but as a force in continuous formation. Each image seems to inhabit a primordial stage, where stone, life, memory, and imagination still belong to the same substance. The result is a visual language that invites viewers to suspend certainty and contemplate the potential held within what is on the verge of becoming.

My artistic practice explores the human condition through themes of origin, consciousness, finitude, and creation. The human figure occupies a central place in my work, not as a representation of the individual, but as a space for reflecting on what both defines us and lies beyond us. I am drawn to those moments when fundamental questions remain open and the image becomes an instrument of thought. Guided by questions that have accompanied my own journey, I seek to create works that bring together sensory experience, philosophical inquiry, and the search for meaning. I have participated in exhibitions in Brazil and abroad, including the Florence and Osten Biennials.
Apenas a tornava visível.
While developing this work, I found myself returning to a question that accompanied the entire process: what is the human place between Bara and Assah? That question led me beyond the making of the images, toward a reflection on origin, consciousness, and the very meaning of creation. The challenge was to find a visual language capable of sustaining that inquiry without reducing it to explanation or definitive answers. Each image became a way of approaching this mystery: what precedes us, what constitutes us, and what continues to come into being through us. In the end, I realized that the work did not resolve the question from which it emerged. It simply made it visible.

I seek what exists before it is named.
O processo criativo deste tríptico começou no papel.
The creative process behind this triptych began on paper. Before the paintings came the questions, the sketches, the notes, and the attempts to give form to ideas that were not yet fully defined. As I reflected on Bara and Assah, I found myself drawn into questions of origin, creation, and the human condition. The sketches accompanied that inquiry, allowing different possibilities to emerge, be reconsidered, and gradually transformed along the way. The paintings grew out of this continuous dialogue between thought and image, bringing together the vastness of creation, human experience, and life in the process of becoming. These pages preserve part of that journey.

In Before It Had a Name, René Agostinho approaches a moment that precedes language. The triptych brings together images that inhabit a primordial state of human experience, where form, meaning, and identity have yet to be fully defined. The aurora borealis, the human body, and life in formation appear as distinct manifestations of the same question: what exists before it is named? Each image preserves something that remains beyond the reach of classification, resisting any definitive definition. The inquiry proposed by Bara and Assah takes on a profoundly human dimension here. The gaze turns toward what precedes language and toward our need to make sense of the world. The body occupies the center of the composition as a site of both consciousness and questioning. Between the vastness of the cosmos and life just beginning, it becomes the measure through which we seek to understand our own existence. The three images remain in continuous dialogue, bringing together origin, consciousness, and possibility within a shared horizon of reflection. A fundamental question then emerges: at what moment do we begin to assign names, identity, and meaning to what had already belonged to reality long before us?

Minhas obras integram coleções no Brasil, Canadá e Inglaterra. André Barretto

I am a self-taught visual artist whose practice explores the relationship between light, perception, and contemplation. After more than three decades away from painting, I returned to my artistic practice with a renewed understanding of vision and its limits. I am interested in exploring what slowly reveals itself before us: landscapes, atmospheres, and moments when the visible seems to hold something beyond itself. My works are held in private collections in Brazil, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Not every image is born from what we see. Some are born from what we trust.
When I accepted the invitation to take part in Bara and Assah, I found myself facing a question that seemed larger than the painting itself: how can the moment of creation be represented? Not a finished landscape, but the instant when light begins to appear and the world still exists as possibility. My process is usually guided by observation and the gradual construction of the image. This time, the experience was different. The limitations of my vision made it impossible to plan the composition in detail. There were no preliminary studies, nor the reassurance of knowing exactly where each decision would lead. The work had to come into being directly on the canvas. As the painting unfolded, I came to understand that creation can also mean moving forward without ever fully knowing the path ahead. Each layer revealed questions that had not been visible at the outset. Every decision required attention, attentiveness, and trust in the next gesture. The painting gradually took shape through discovery, revision, and successive attempts to draw closer to what I was trying to express. Throughout this process, I realized that creation is profoundly human. It places us before the unknown, before our own limitations, and before all that remains beyond our control. In the end, I understood that the greatest challenge was not to represent the origin of the world, but to accept that the act of creation itself arises from this coexistence of mystery and trust. Some images do not appear because we can already see them in their entirety. They emerge because we continue moving toward them.

In Between Light and Origin, André Barretto invites viewers into a rare moment, one in which the world has yet to assume its final form. At the center of the composition, light inaugurates the possibility of order. Water, vegetation, rock, and horizon emerge as signs of a reality beginning to organize itself, as though matter were still learning how to exist. The work is less concerned with depicting a landscape than with imagining the brief interval between the creative impulse and the emergence of the visible world.
A second layer of meaning places the work in a particularly distinctive position within Bara and Assah. André Barretto's artistic practice unfolds in constant negotiation with the limits of vision. Unable to fully anticipate the final image, he builds the work through successive approximations, intuitive decisions, and discoveries made in the very act of painting. Each step forward requires trust in what has not yet fully revealed itself. In this sense, the painting finds an unexpected resonance with the exhibition's central question.

Before becoming form, every act of creation inhabits a space of uncertainty. Before it can be seen clearly, it must first be sensed. Between light and origin, André reminds us that creation may be precisely this: continuing forward while the path itself is still taking shape.

Tania Martins

I seek to create images that remain open, like dreams that continue to reveal new meanings long after we awaken. My practice explores transparency, layering, and different modes of perception, bringing painting, memory, and imagination into dialogue. Flowers, birds, and portals recur throughout this visual universe, not as fixed symbols, but as forms in constant transformation. I am interested in what reveals itself only partially, allowing each viewer to complete the experience through their own gaze, memories, and what they choose to recognize within the image.
The greatest challenge of this work was to preserve the elusive nature of the experience from which it emerged. The dream remained in my memory with far greater emotional clarity than visual precision. I remembered the sense of wonder, the serenity of the encounter, and the beauty of that moment, but not a fixed image that could simply be reproduced. 58
Some dreams continue creating long after we awaken.
As I developed the work, I sought to create a space capable of holding that memory without confining it to a single interpretation. The use of transparent layers allowed different moments of perception to coexist: what had been seen, what remained as sensation, and what continued to evolve in memory. As the process unfolded, the images themselves also began to change. The flower, the bird, and the portal gradually ceased to occupy fixed positions and instead came to share a single form in constant transformation. The challenge was to preserve that openness, allowing the work to retain something of the same sense of wonder, gentleness, and quiet enchantment that marked the original intuition. 59
Some experiences remain alive because they resist being fixed in place. The more memory attempts to organize them, the more they reveal new possibilities for interpretation. Tania Martins draws on this unstable substance to create a work in which dream, memory, and imagination coexist within the same surface. The visual elements no longer occupy fixed positions, becoming part of an image in constant transformation. Layers of transparency deepen this sense of openness. Each layer reshapes the one before it, introducing new relationships between what is revealed and what remains partially hidden. The image never presents itself all at once. It gradually reveals itself, inviting the viewer to discover their own paths through its forms and appearances. Within this space of discovery, creation becomes an act of listening, preserving mystery while allowing the image to continue transforming with each encounter.

Vera Pilnik Sanovicz
São Paulo, São Paulo, Brasil | Artist, Architect, and Art Educator
My practice explores how light questions my everyday experience and reshapes the way I perceive the world. Constant encounters with different geographies nourish a body of work in which reality, imagination, and memory cease to be fixed categories, becoming instead spaces of light and shadow. It is on the canvas that doubt becomes image, light becomes color, and the uncertainties of lived experience find form. My paintings do not seek to record the world as it is, but to question it as it passes through me.
The challenge of this work was to navigate the distance between what I experienced, what I remember, and what the image became over the course of the process. Light unsettles the stability of perception; memory unsettles lived experience. With Bara and Assah, a new question emerged: what do we mean by creation? If I had already learned to question what I see, I also began to question the very idea of origin. The image emerges from the convergence of photographs, writings, and layers of memory that reorganize actions, landscapes, and everyday life. At a certain point, the process enters into dialogue with artificial intelligence. By participating in the construction of the image, it further expands the uncertainty surrounding what we see, remember, and imagine. What interests me is not fidelity to the original image, but the transformations that arise at each stage of the process. 62
Every landscape carries the traces of those who have passed through it.
If Bara and Assah led me to question the very idea of origin, it also made me more aware of the impossibility of originality. Much of what I understand about painting has been shaped by my study of art history and by the way the Impressionists transformed light into experience, and experience into painting. Painting becomes a space of negotiation between control and surrender, while the canvas becomes a place where images are tested and transformed. Through this process, I have come to see that reality and illusion inevitably intermingle, and that memory no longer functions as a faithful archive, but instead becomes porous, selective, and inventive. Between mountains occupied by human constructions and artificial waves, a reflection on the human desire to organize what ultimately exceeds every attempt at control emerges. The surfer appears to master the wave, yet depends on a manufactured sea. The skier, diminished by the vastness of the mountain, is made to seem larger through the structures we have built. The landscape ceases to be a conquest and becomes instead a fantasy of control, an attempt to sustain the illusion of mastery before immensity and our own human fragility. Within this suspended state, where the image continues to oscillate between appearing and dissolving, the paintings may never be entirely complete. They remain as questions, never offering definitive answers. 63
Mountains and oceans are often imagined as expressions of nature's grandeur, places where the scale of the world diminishes the human figure. Vera Pilnik Sanovicz approaches these landscapes from a different perspective. Her gaze lingers on the almost imperceptible traces of human presence: a shadow cast across the snow, a structure inscribed on the horizon, subtle marks that reveal our desire to inhabit, organize, and experience what ultimately exceeds us. Within Bara and Assah, these paintings acquire a particular resonance. In the Hebrew tradition, a distinction is made between the original act of creation and the human act of transforming and extending what already exists. Between mountains, waves, and the structures built to make them accessible, the artist turns her attention precisely to this second movement. The landscape remains vast and untamed, yet it receives layers of intention, technique, and desire. The cable car, the manufactured wave, and the structures that almost disappear into the image reveal something profoundly human: to create is not to master the world, but to take part in it. Every intervention leaves a trace. Every trace becomes a way of inhabiting the world.

I was born in Belém, in the Brazilian Amazon, and have developed my artistic practice between Rio de Janeiro and the Amazon, a region to which I continually return in search of the references that sustain my work. I am interested in the intelligence embedded in human-made constructions, particularly the objects, tools, and solutions developed by riverside communities, observing how these forms of ingenuity embody memory, knowledge, and lived experience. My work transforms these observations into sculptures, paintings, and installations that bring together structural precision, formal economy, and symbolic depth. I have exhibited in Brazil and internationally since 1975.
My artistic journey has been shaped by sustained observation. Over the years, I have remained deeply interested in the forms of intelligence embedded in the objects, tools, and craft traditions developed by the riverside communities of the Amazon. Each return to this universe adds new layers to my research, revealing relationships between material, function, and knowledge. I cultivate a continuous practice of attention, through which the work develops as a result of the time devoted to observation, understanding, and the construction of form.

Nenhuma forma existe sozinha. No form exists in isolation.
My creative process unfolds as a continuous exercise in construction and refinement. Forms undergo successive adjustments until each element finds its place within the composition. Weight, tension, scale, rhythm, and proportion all contribute to this search for balance. Gradually, the structure gains clarity, revealing only what is essential. I seek to reduce form to its necessary elements, preserving what gives it meaning, strength, and the capacity to remain open to multiple interpretations.

In I Depend on You for My Balance, Osvaldo Gaia arranges a structure in which every element responds to the others. Weight, tension, support, and suspension become part of a single composition, built with precision and remarkable economy of means. Nothing occupies an arbitrary place. Stability emerges from the relationship between distinct parts, revealing that every form depends upon delicate agreements to preserve its integrity. In the Hebrew tradition, creation is understood as the ordering of the forces that make life possible. Within Bara and Assah, Osvaldo Gaia's work resonates with this idea by presenting balance as the result of a shared construction. The artist's formal economy concentrates a question that belongs equally to matter and to human experience: to exist is to respond to the other. The work suggests that creation is also the act of establishing relationships capable of giving form and continuity to the world.

I am a self-taught artist whose practice centers on oil painting. My work grows from close observation of nature and from a desire to understand the relationships between creation, spirituality, and everyday life. I am interested in discovering greatness within small gestures, in the details that often go unnoticed, and in the ways light reveals meaning. I have participated in exhibitions throughout Brazil, and my works are held in private collections in Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia.
For a long time, I sought to represent the grandeur of creation. Gradually, I came to understand that it also reveals itself in what almost goes unnoticed. The challenge was to create an image capable of holding the tension between the immense and the minute, between the mystery of origin and the patient work of small things. The sketch preserves the first signs of that discovery, revealing how the composition gradually took shape before arriving at its final form.

The grandeur of creation reveals itself in the smallest gestures.
This work grew out of a period of observation and contemplation. My reading of Bara and Assah prompted reflections on the origin of things, the divine presence within creation, and our human responsibility toward the world we inherit and transform. As I immersed myself in this inquiry, I began to look more closely at the natural world around me. Light reflected on water, the forms of stones, and the tireless work of ants revealed a truth that came to guide the entire composition: the grandeur of creation also reveals itself in what appears small.
71
The Hebrew tradition distinguishes between two movements of creation. Bara refers to the primordial act, the impulse that brings new possibility into being. Assah refers to the ongoing work of giving form, organizing, caring for, and building upon what already exists. Mary Queiroz brings these two dimensions together through a fundamental question: where does greatness truly reveal itself ? Her answer emerges through an inversion of scale. What we usually seek in vastness is rediscovered in the smallest detail. The gaze abandons the search for the extraordinary and comes to recognize that meaning, beauty, and purpose also inhabit the smallest gestures. In this way, creation no longer belongs solely to the moment of origin, but continues to reveal itself in all that grows, transforms, builds, and participates in the world. By bringing greatness and smallness into the same reality, the work invites us to reconsider the measure of things, suggesting that the whole remains inscribed within each of its parts, as though every detail preserved something of what we call creation.

A minha pesquisa nasce do encontro entre fé, espiritualidade e pintura. My practice grows from the meeting of faith, spirituality, and painting. I am interested in understanding how the invisible finds form, color, and material presence, revealing the sacred dimensions of human experience. I create mixed-media works on canvas, wood, and paper, where gesture and movement seek to make visible processes of inner transformation. Water occupies a central place in my practice as an image of renewal, vitality, and divine presence. For me, art is an exercise in contemplation, surrender, and communion. I have lived in Ribeirão Preto since 1985, where I also direct the C.H. Faria Art Gallery by Licia Vallim.

The greatest challenge of this work was learning to quiet my own will so that I could listen more clearly to what needed to be revealed. From the very beginning, I understood that this work demanded more than aesthetic decisions. It required trust, attentiveness, and inner openness.
Throughout the process, I deepened my practice of prayer and contemplation. I sought to recognize God's sovereignty over all creation and to understand how the human gesture participates in something greater than itself. Gradually, the painting ceased to be merely a formal construction and became a place of encounter between spiritual inspiration and tangible action.
Water emerged as the central element of this inquiry. It carries the idea of continuous movement, renewal, and life. The female figure became the image of a source that welcomes and gives, making visible the passage of what descends from above into the world. Each layer of the work seeks to bring matter and transcendence into a closer relationship, uniting what is visible with what can only be perceived through faith.
In the end, I came to understand that creation is also an act of surrender. The work emerged from the meeting between what had been entrusted to me and what I was able to shape with my own hands. 75

Across many traditions, water embodies origin, renewal, and the promise of continuity. It has accompanied humanity since its earliest narratives, associated with birth, transformation, and vitality. Its image runs through time, beliefs, and cultures, preserving its capacity to speak simultaneously of matter and mystery. In her work for Between Bara and Assah, Licia Vallim brings this symbolic legacy into a reflection on the very act of creation. The female figure appears as both source and passage, uniting what receives with what gives. The luminous movement that flows through the composition suggests a force in continuous action, one that finds meaning in its capacity to generate, nurture, and share. Between materiality and spirituality, the artist creates an image in which creation becomes an act of receiving. Water ceases to be merely a symbol and becomes instead the measure of a human condition: nothing flourishes without first receiving; nothing multiplies without being shared.

Sandra Becker
Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil | pesquisadora e artista visual
Sou artista visual e pesquisadora.
Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil | Researcher and visual artist Sandra Becker I am a visual artist and researcher based in São Paulo. My practice encompasses installation and ceramics while exploring forms of inscription shaped by the traces left by the body and by time. Clay, leather, light, parchment, and domestic motifs recur as both material and language within my work. I hold a Master's degree in Visual Arts (Production, Theory, and Criticism) and a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Faculdade Santa Marcelina. I regularly participate in exhibitions, residencies, and contemporary art programs, with projects presented at cultural institutions in Brazil, China, and Israel. My practice is dedicated to exploring the ways in which matter records, preserves, and transforms human experience.
Throughout the process, I faced the challenge of transforming an investigation into the Torah, the architecture of the Unibes Cultural Center, and the idea of transmitting knowledge into a work that would appear visually simple while carrying multiple layers of meaning. The relationship between light, skin, and writing emerged gradually, as each material found its place. My intention was to create a work capable of holding these layers without fully explaining them.
78
Bara and Assah reveal that creation is also an act of transmission. Nothing remains unchanged, yet something always endures.
The central conceptual solution emerged when I realized that the research could be organized around the idea of transmission. This insight brought architecture, language, memory, and tradition together as parts of a single continuum. I began to think of knowledge as something that is preserved without remaining unchanged, moving across time, bodies, and contexts. The work grew from an attempt to give form to this process, in which every act of transmission preserves something of what it has received while adding something of its own.
79

Some forms of knowledge endure because they are remembered. Others endure because they find a place to rest. A scroll, a wall, a skin, a voice. In the Jewish tradition, transmission is understood as a living act, renewed with each retelling. What reaches the present is not knowledge preserved in a pure state, but something that has carried time within itself. Between Bara and Assah, between what comes into being and what is shaped, creation also appears as inheritance. Something received. Something transformed. Something offered back to the world. Sandra Becker's research approaches this delicate point where material and knowledge come to share the same destiny. Her work questions the places that receive memory before it continues its journey. It asks what remains when bodies disappear, generations succeed one another, and origin can no longer be reached directly. What unfolds before the viewer is the persistence of a teaching that continues to find new surfaces of inscription, new readers, and new forms of existence.

Chris Acyoli
Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil | Psicólogo, ceramista e escultor
Chris Acyoli
Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil | Psychologist, ceramist and sculptor
Sculpture and ceramics are the primary mediums of my practice. My work grows from the meeting of ancestry, memory, and human experience, with a particular interest in African traditions and the knowledge preserved through their symbols, ways of knowing, and spiritual practices. I seek to understand the diversity of human experience and the different ways in which cultures and peoples give meaning to existence. I see ancestry as a living source of knowledge, capable of illuminating questions of the present while contributing to the future. Psychology, mythology, and critical thought further expand this inquiry, bringing reflection, emotion, and material together within the creative process.
82
The development of this work began with a question that accompanied me throughout the entire process: how can one create from a theme that does not belong directly to one's own experience without abandoning the truth one seeks in one's work? Rather than looking for answers outside myself, I turned to the memories, readings, and references that shaped my childhood and artistic formation. Reflections on creation, ancestry, and spirituality led me to an encounter between word and matter. Gradually, I came to understand that the work did not arise from an attempt to represent a specific tradition, but from an inquiry into what precedes form. A creative impulse that manifests itself through language, imagination, and the enduring human search for meaning.
O processo criativo desta obra conduziu-me por caminhos inesperados.
The creative process behind this work led me along unexpected paths. The first questions emerged from the need to find a place of truth from which I could engage with the concepts of Bara and Assah. Throughout the research, memories from childhood, readings of Genesis, reflections on ancestry, and formative references resurfaced in a new light. Gradually, the inquiry turned toward the creative power of the word and its capacity to transform matter, thought, and experience. The installation grew out of this journey, bringing together elements that allowed me to explore the relationship between voice, creation, and form, while recognizing that every act of creation also belongs to a long continuum of knowledge, imagination, and shared memory.
83
Creation presupposes that something takes place before form. Chris Acyoli centers his inquiry on this inaugural moment, when the word is not yet an object, but a generative force capable of giving order to matter. The voice ceases to be merely language and becomes a creative principle, bringing together time, memory, and experience within a shared origin. Every element of the installation participates in this continuous movement, suggesting that every act of creation continues to unfold long after the first gesture. By bringing together ceramics, ancestry, spirituality, and reflection on the human condition, the artist transforms an origin narrative into an inquiry into the very act of creation. If every form carries the memory of what came before it, perhaps matter never ceases to respond to the first word that called it into being.

Yvelise Cavalcante
São Paulo, São Paulo, Brasil | Designer e artista visual
Aprendo criando. São Paulo, São Paulo, Brasil | Designer and visual artist Yvelise Cavalcante I learn through making. Throughout my life, different materials, techniques, and experiences have become ways of observing, understanding, and transforming the world around me. I am more interested in process than in certainty, in what emerges through making and reveals possibilities that were not apparent at the outset. Nature, symbols, and manual work occupy a central place in my practice, sustaining a body of work shaped by experimentation, discovery, and a lasting desire to keep learning.
The greatest challenge of this work was to give visual form to something I had always experienced as difficult to define. I wanted to speak about freedom, coexistence, and belonging without relying on ready-made answers or fixed messages. Throughout the process, I brought together references, memories, symbols, and fragments of different experiences, seeking a way to preserve their individuality without losing the sense of a larger whole. Finding that balance required time, attentiveness, and trust in the path the work itself gradually revealed. In time, I came to understand that the work did not lie in organizing every answer, but in creating a place where different stories could coexist. 86
My creative process almost always begins without a clearly defined path. I enjoy experimenting with m a t e r i a l s, t e c h n i q u e s, a n d u n e x p e c t e d combinations, allowing the practice itself to reveal directions I cannot yet perceive at the outset. Often, one image leads to another, one material suggests a new gesture, and the work discovers its own form as it comes into being.
Symbols emerge naturally throughout this process. Nature appears frequently, along with elements associated with growth, transformation, and coexistence. I rarely begin with predetermined meanings; instead, I prefer to observe what reveals itself through making. Creating has become a way of listening and discovering, an exercise in attentiveness that allows me to learn from the process itself. 87
Growth does not always mean moving in the same direction. Some forms of life find their greatest strength precisely in their capacity to embrace difference, allowing singular paths and distinct experiences to coexist without losing what makes them unique. Belonging and freedom no longer occupy opposing positions, but become part of the same structure, where each element preserves its own identity while contributing to the whole. Diversity ceases to challenge unity and instead becomes one of its essential conditions. Newspaper clippings incorporated into the composition deepen this reflection by bringing intimate experience into dialogue with the questions that shape collective life. Personal stories, public events, and different realities share the same space, forming a fabric in which memory, affection, and coexistence are interwoven. The recurring presence of ants within the artist's visual language reinforces the understanding that every construction depends on connection, cooperation, and participation. Care reveals itself precisely in the capacity to bring distinct parts together without erasing their differences, suggesting that building relationships requires less similarity than a willingness to recognize, embrace, and value diverse paths.

Leiria, Portugal | Filósofo, pedagogo e escritor
A escrita acompanha-me há décadas.
Leiria, Portugal | Philosopher, educator, and writer
Writing has accompanied me for decades. After a long career in teaching and school leadership, I continued to devote myself to poetry, reflective writing, and cultural activity. I am interested in language as an instrument of thought and encounter. Throughout fifty years of shared life with the visual artist Olinda Mota, I have developed projects that bring poetry and painting into dialogue, exploring the creative possibilities that emerge between word and image. Among the works that have marked me most is Poem'Arte, a project in which the poem ceases to be commentary and becomes an integral part of the creative process itself. 90
Two Voices, One Creation. For fifty years, Olinda and Virgílio have built a shared life. Over that time, painting and philosophy, image and word, gesture and thought have gradually found ways to enter into dialogue. In Bara and Assah, that relationship takes visible form. The poem does not come after the painting, nor does the painting follow the poem. Both arise from the same movement of inquiry. While one investigates through language, the other explores through matter. While one questions origin, the other seeks to give it form. Between them unfolds a continuous conversation, sustained by decades of intellectual companionship, ar tistic sensitivity, and dedication to teaching. In this work, creation appears as a shared act, where two distinct trajectories converge around the same question: how does a world come into being? Perhaps this is the question that has accompanied them for fifty years, and that still, even today, continues to make room for new acts of creation. 91
Two mirrored images occupy the same space without ever becoming identical. Between them, a poem traces a passage. Olinda Mota's painting and Virgílio Mota's writing meet around a shared question: how does a world come into being? In that encounter, creation extends beyond canvas and text, finding its place in the dialogue between word and image. The composition gradually reveals an unexpected form. The circular movement of the painting, reflected upon itself, suggests the figure of infinity, an image of creation in continuous renewal, never confined to its inaugural moment. Within Bara and Assah, to create is to participate in a work that is never complete. The world comes into being, transforms, and comes into being once again. The painting becomes poem; the poem returns to painting. Both rediscover the same center, where origin and continuity cease to exist as separate moments and become part of the same creative act.

Cajuru, São Paulo, Brasil | Fashion designer, interior designer and visual artist
I was born in Cajuru, in the state of São Paulo, and now live in the city of São Paulo. Trained in fashion design and interior design, I work as a visual artist. I find the foundation of my practice in drawing, color, and the close observation of everyday life. I am especially interested in the feminine universe, in affection, memory, and the details that often go unnoticed. I work across canvas, paper, fabric, tarp, and a variety of other materials, recording fragments of the time I inhabit. A watercolorist at heart, I bring painting, collage, stitching, poetry, and digital tools, including artificial intelligence, into my creative inquiry. After a lifetime devoted to creation, I continue collecting questions with the enthusiasm of someone who still believes the world holds surprises.
94
When I first heard the words Bara and Assah, I did not know what to do with them. Rather than searching for immediate answers, I began collecting questions. I wrote down thoughts, doubts, and unexpected associations. Between classes, conversations, readings, and a trip to the local produce market on a Monday, I began to realize that creation may not happen only through extraordinary events, but also through the ordinary gestures of everyday life. The greatest challenge was finding a way to bring such vast ideas into my own experience. The solution emerged when I stopped looking for definitions and began paying attention to what already belonged to my world: fabric, the reverse side of things, choices, paths, the objects we carry, and what we decide to keep. Gradually, the shopping bag emerged as a place where questions, memory, material, and imagination could come together. This work grew out of that process. Out of an unhurried curiosity. Out of an attempt to understand what we choose to carry with us, and what remains at the bottom of the bag, waiting to be discovered.
95
A sacola permanece vazia.
Some objects accompany everyday life so closely that we eventually stop questioning them. A clock marks the hours. A shopping bag holds what we choose to carry with us. Ana de Andrade brings these two familiar objects together and turns them into a question. The clock fixes a precise moment. The bag remains empty. Between them emerges a simple yet unsettling thought: what might God's Monday have been like? What would have been placed inside the bag before the first act of creation? The work offers no answer. Instead, it preserves the power of the question, reminding us that every act of creation begins before matter itself, in the choice of what will be received. Time then ceases to be merely a measure and becomes a condition of creation. Some works wait for years before finding the moment in which they can come into being. Within Bara and Assah, to create also means recognizing the right moment, accepting the necessity of waiting, and understanding that every work begins when its time has finally arrived.

My practice grows from my Jewish roots and from the relationship between memory, spirituality, and cultural transmission. I am interested in exploring how traditions preserved across millennia continue to generate meaning in the present and to shape our understanding of time, identity, and human experience. Bringing together historical records, texts, religious symbols, and contemporary visual languages, I create works that place past and present in dialogue as parts of a single continuum. My work seeks to make visible the layers of knowledge, values, and traditions that remain alive across generations.
The greatest challenge of this work was to translate a concept deeply rooted in the Jewish tradition into a contemporary visual language. I sought to bring together elements of digital culture, the relentless cycles of information, and the dynamics that shape contemporary life with an experience that invites precisely the opposite: interruption, stillness, and reflection. The process required finding a balance between innovation and reverence, preserving the integrity of the symbols, values, and teachings that inspire the work while seeking contemporary ways of sharing a tradition that has remained alive for millennia.
In developing this work, I chose to begin from an experience that is deeply rooted in both my life and my spiritual practice. Representing the Shabbat led me to reflect on what we leave behind when this sacred time begins, and on what becomes possible when we interrupt, even temporarily, the relentless logic of constant productivity. The composition grew out of this duality. On one side are elements associated with information overload, everyday concer ns, and the continuous stimuli of contemporary life. On the other is a visual inquiry into light, contemplation, and the teachings that shape the experience of Shabbat. By bringing together digital media, artificial intelligence, texts, and symbolic imagery, I sought to create a work in which multiple layers coexist, bringing everyday experience into dialogue with a space of pause, contemplation, and encounter. 99
Throughout much of human history, creation has been associated with action: building, transforming, expanding, conquering. The creative act became both a measure of value and a way of inscribing one's existence upon the world. The tradition explored in Greicy Khafif's work leads this understanding toward a rarely considered threshold: the moment when creation encounters a consciously chosen limit. What becomes visible when the hand that transforms deliberately chooses to become still? In Shabbat Vainafash, the seventh day offers one of the most singular responses to the question posed by Bara and Assah. If Bara refers to the primordial act of creation attributed to the divine, and Assah to the ongoing work of transformation entrusted to humanity, Shabbat affirms the value of conscious interruption. To cease is neither absence, passivity, nor emptiness. It is a deliberate act, one that restores to time a quality so often obscured by productivity, urgency, and the uninterrupted succession of choices, responses, and movement. The work ultimately brings us to an ancient and profoundly contemporary question: what becomes visible when, even for a single moment, we suspend the impulse to transform what stands before us?

Participating in Bara and Assah as both curator and artist brought with it a question that accompanied my entire creative process. After months immersed in the works of the other participating artists, I realized that my own piece would need to enter into dialogue with the exhibition as a whole. The challenge was to create a work capable of embracing multiple voices without losing its own identity. RESET emerged from that search. Rather than imagining an ending, I envisioned a point of beginning again, a place where every encounter experienced throughout the exhibition could remain in motion and continue generating new questions. Among the eighteen openings of the work, I chose the word Almost. It remains with me as a reminder that creation is never truly complete. There is always a possibility yet to be realized, a lesson still to be learned, a gesture that continues to take shape. 103
Toda criação começa muito antes do primeiro gesto.

Every act of creation begins long before the first gesture. We inherit time, language, memory, encounters, and everything that others have created before us. From this invisible inheritance, RESET comes into being. The work's eighteen openings bring distinct artistic inquiries into conversation, affirming that no act of creation ever happens in isolation. Each artist expands the horizon of the next, adding a new possibility to the creative act.
A décima oitava abertura traz a palavra Quase.
The eighteenth opening bears the word Almost. I chose to remain in that place because it is the closest I can come to the act of creation attributed to Bara. It is there that I continue to draw from the source of learning, shared creation, and the enduring possibility of beginning again. Almost keeps curiosity, attentiveness, and the awareness that every work remains open to what is still to come.
This work is also an act of gratitude for the seventeen openings that came before my own. Each one expanded my understanding of creation and became part of my own practice. Between Bara and Assah, I choose to remain in Almost.

MANIFESTO
Between Openings
No human achievement knows where it truly begins. What we call creation never starts with the first gesture. It begins much earlier: in the language we learned before we knew we were learning, in the questions we inherited, in images that refused to disappear, in hands that taught other hands, and in ideas that travelled across centuries before reaching us. Whenever we believe we are beginning something, we are almost always continuing something whose origin already belongs to the whole. For a long time, we believed originality was born from solitude. We imagined that creating meant breaking away from everything that came before. Yet human experience tells a different story. Everything we receive was once someone else's creation, and everything we create will inevitably become part of someone else's imagination. Between one creative act and the next lies a primordial communion that makes possible the continuity of everything we know. It is there that I discover a part of me belongs to the whole, and that the whole lives within me. Between Bara and Assah lies precisely this interval. Bara speaks of an origin beyond human experience; Assah entrusts us with the responsibility of transforming what we have received so that the world remains open to what has yet to be created. Whatever truly transforms the world refuses to end with itself. Discoveries expand discoveries, while works broaden the horizons they inherit and prepare the way for those yet to come. Generation after generation, humanity receives, transforms, and passes on. Whatever one person adds to the world reshapes what everyone else will one day be able to imagine. It is this communion that allows humanity to keep recreating itself. The eighteen openings gathered in this book were born from different journeys, different languages, and different questions. Yet they all belong to the same conversation. Each artist found a singular opening, but none exists in isolation; every one broadens the one before it and makes the next one possible. This book brings together different ways of keeping questions alive. As you reach the final page, the book comes to an end, but the question remains. The next opening was never within these pages. It has always been within you. What will you do with it?

MANIFESTO Entre Frestas
Adriana Scartaris Curadora e autora 107
