Memunatu’s miracle journey
When you buy a gift from this catalogue, you’re helping children like Memunatu unwrap gifts of hope and happiness. At just 10 months old, Memunatu’s life was already at risk. A tumour on her neck was growing day by day, making it difficult for her to eat, swallow and breathe. Her mother, Aminata, would stay awake at night terrified of what the future might look like for her little girl. Everything changed when Anne-Marie van Tonder, a Mercy Ships volunteer, saw Memunatu during a visit to a local children’s hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone. “I saw this little baby, very fragile, looking at me,” Anne-Marie shared. “It’s like she was speaking directly into my life. It was a real spiritual intervention.” Deeply moved, she helped coordinate to bring Memunatu to the Global Mercy for an urgent surgery, despite the already full surgical schedule. The volunteer surgical crew on board recognised how critical Memunatu’s condition was and made room for her life-saving operation. Before the operation, volunteer preoperative manager Krystal Franke spent time sitting by Aminata’s side. “I could tell she was afraid and scared for her daughter’s life. And I know what that’s like…So, we prayed, and we just talked about how our children are really God’s children, and they’re not our own… that I would be with her as much as she needed me.”

The complex operation took several hours, with volunteer surgeon Dr Leo Cheng from the UK working painstakingly to remove the tumour while protecting the delicate nerves and blood vessels in Memunatu’s neck. Afterwards, Krystal witnessed Aminata’s joy at the reunion: “I saw a light come back into her eyes. Her daughter was safe, she was going to be okay, and she was going to live.” Now back home, Memunatu’s life already looks different. The swelling has gone, revealing the happy smile that had been hidden for so long. Watching her daughter play always fills Aminata with a flood of gratitude. “I was very worried for my child,” she said. “But God said Mercy Ships would help me. Without this operation, my child would not have lived.” Memunatu is too young to understand the prayers whispered over her, the volunteers who rearranged schedules to make room for her or the many people whose generosity made it all possible. But everyone who met her will remember the little girl whose life was transformed by hope. “She was just such a special case,” Anne-Marie said. “She’s a child I will carry with me forever.”
