A NOTE FROM OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome! The Chinese Lady is an important new play by one of the most important playwrights working in the American theatre. Not only is Lloyd Suh’s singular imagination undeniable, he’s also deeply committed to expanding how we understand our world through history. The best playwrights are also great historians. Lloyd has given us such a beautiful meditation—a play that asks big questions through its intimate framework. Lloyd gives us a story that reflects the kaleidoscope of today. We value that at LWT. And because the best theatre often responds to our current moment, The Chinese Lady is the right story for all of us, as a community, to sit with. The play invites us to be transported by its beauty, humor, sadness, and possibility. We are deeply grateful to the visionary leadership of Ralph B. Peña who has been a champion of this play from the beginning. Ralph, along with the actors and entire creative team, have given us a world-class production. And of course, nothing would be possible without our dedicated LWT staff—they worked magic to make this return possible. A special shout-out to our Technical Director, Dylan Callery who continues to inspire again and again. This was a long intermission—we were in rehearsal for The Chinese Lady and just about to start performances when COVID-19 shut us down. It’s truly glorious to pick up where we left off. A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR This play is an adventure. When the playwright Lloyd Suh first told me he was writing about the first Chinese woman to step foot in America, I was hooked, even if I knew very little about Afong Moy. For much of the next year, I searched for everything I could find about Afong Moy (there wasn’t much), and I tried to trace her trajectory through some of the most tumultuous events in U.S. history, including the Civil War. What must it have been like to witness a country grappling with issues of freedom when she herself was consigned to serve her American promoters? This country has a long complex relationship with peoples of color. Afong Moy’s story is crisscrossed by America’s fascination with the exotic, its penchant for putting peoples and objects on display for a paying public eager to see firsthand evidence of its moral and cultural superiority. Surely, only uncivilized heathens can choose to bind a child’s feet. There is very little information to tell us what Afong Moy might have thought about her situation and what she witnessed. What little exists are from the perspective of the observer. It was up to Lloyd Suh to help us imagine the inner lives of this young woman and her translator Atung. It was up to an Asian American playwright to finally give voice to those long silenced by history, and to return the gaze they were subjected to. And while Afong Moy and Atung were here at a time when we were still figuring out who we are as a nation, have we finally rid ourselves of our need to put things in glass boxes and label them? That is the question that guided our journey through this amazing play. I am deeply grateful to Long Wharf Theatre, especially Jacob G. ABOUT THE SHOW The Chinese Lady tells the story of fourteen-year old Afong Moy as she’s brought to the United States from Guangzhou Province in 1834. Allegedly the first Chinese woman to set foot on US soil, she has been put on display for the American public as “The Chinese Lady.” For the next half-century, she performs for curious white people, showing them how she eats, what she wears, and the highlight of the event: how she walks with bound feet. As the decades wear on, her celebrated sideshow comes to define and challenge her very sense of identity. Inspired by the true story of Afong Moy’s life, The Chinese Lady is a dark, poetic, yet whimsical portrait of America through the eyes of a young Chinese woman.

Lloyd Suh is the author of The Chinese Lady, Charles Francis Chan Jr.’s Exotic Oriental Murder Mystery, American Hwangap, The Wong Kids in the Secret of the Space Chupacabra Go!, Jesus in India, and others, produced with Ma-Yi Theater Company, Magic Theatre, Ensemble Studio Theatre, NAATCO, The Play Company, Denver Center Theatre Company, Milwaukee Rep, ArtsEmerson, Children’s Theatre Company, and more, including internationally at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and with PCPA in Seoul, Korea. Lloyd has received support from the NEA Arena Stage New Play Development program, Mellon Foundation, New York Film Academy, New York State Council on the Arts, Jerome Foundation, TCG, Dramatists Guild, and residencies including NYS&F and Ojai Foundation. Lloyd is an alum of Youngblood and the Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab, and was a recipient of a 2016 Helen Merrill Award and the 2019 Herb Alpert Award in the Arts. From 2005-2010 he served as Artistic Director of Second Generation and Co-Director of Ma-Yi Writers Lab, and has served since 2011 as the Director of Artistic Programs at The Lark, and since 2015 as a member of the Dramatists Guild Council.

Ralph B. Peña (HE/HIM) DIRECTOR

Ralph B. Peña is a renowned director whose recent Off-Broadway directing credits include, The Chinese Lady, Felix Starro, The Wong Kids, Microcrisis, Among the Dead, and the short film Vancouver. His work has been seen at The Public Theater, Long Wharf Theatre, Laguna Playhouse, Victory Gardens, LaMama Experimental Theatre Club, The Children’s Theater Company, Vineyard Theater, among others. Ralph is Ma-Yi Theater Company’s Artistic Director and has been instrumental in establishing Ma-Yi Theater as the country’s leading incubator of new works by Asian American playwrights, reaping numerous Obie and Drama Desk Awards, a Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical (KPOP), and the 2018 Ross Wetzsteon Obie Award.

Junghyun Georgia Lee (SHE/HER) SCENIC DESIGN

Junghyun Georgia Lee is a Korean born and NYC-based designer. She has designed for Ma-Yi Theater Company, The Public Theater, Soho Repertory Theatre, The Play Company, Alley Theatre, Hartford Stage, Guthrie Theater, Huntington Theatre Company, Indiana Repertory Theater, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Alliance Theatre, and The Children’s Theatre Company. Lee is a member of New Neighborhood. She earned her MFA from the Yale School of Drama.

Linda Cho

(SHE/HER) COSTUME DESIGN

Linda Cho is an award-winning costume designer whose credits include, Broadway: Take Me Out (upcoming), The Great Society, Lifespan of a Fact, Anastasia (Tony nomination), A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love & Murder (Tony Award); The Velocity of Autumn. Cho has over 200 regional and international design credits in theatre, dance, and opera. She is the recipient of the Craig Noel Award, Connecticut Critic Circle Award, Irene Sharaff Young Master Award, and Ruth Morely Design Award—in addition to nominations from Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel, Henry Hewes, Elliot Norton, Bay Area, Robby, IRNE, and Jeff awards. Cho is an Advisory Committee Member of the American Theater Wing. Cho earned her MFA from the Yale School of Drama.

Jiyoun Chang

(SHE/HER) LIGHTING DESIGN

Jiyoun Chang is a lighting designer and recipient of the Obie Awards special citation in Lighting Design for The World is Round (Ripe Time). Chang’s credits include: Slave Play (Golden Theatre, NYTW); For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf (The Public Theater); Anatomy of Suicide; Eddie and Dave (Atlantic Theatre Company), Sojourners; Her Portmanteau (NYTW), Marys Seacole; Plot Points in Our Sexual Development; brownsville song (LCT3), Something Clean; Too Heavy For Your Pocket; Ugly Lies the Bone (Roundabout Theatre Company), in addition to other credits at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), MCC Theater, Signature Theatre Company, The Guggenheim, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, California Shakespeare Theatre, Guthrie Theater, The Old Globe, Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF), and Studio Theatre. Chang has also received a Tony nomination (Slave Play), Drama Desk nomination (Slave Play), and Henry Hewes Design Awards nomination (Slave Play, Marys Seacole). Chang earned her MFA from the Yale School of Drama.

Fabian Obispo

(HE/HIM) COMPOSITION & SOUND DESIGN

Fabian Obispo returns to Long Wharf Theatre where his credits include Durango, The Romance of Magno Rubio, Going Native, Infinite Ache, Third Army, Syncopation and Abstract Expressions. Recent Off-Broadway credits include, Ma-Yi Theater Company's Felix Starro, Teenage Dick, The Public Theater’s Sea Wall/A Life and Oedipus el Rey. Obispo has designed and composed extensively for regional theatres including Hartford Stage, Westport Country Playhouse, TheaterWorks, Arena Stage, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Kennedy Center, Goodman Theatre, Guthrie Theater, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Huntington Theatre Company, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, and Seattle Repertory Theatre, among others. Fabian recently wrote the score for two short movies Vancouver and Sophocles in Staten Island, and a PBS documentary 20 Years of Asian American Playwriting. He is a recipient of the Barrymore Award and the Berkshire Theatre Critics Award.
