ROM T E ARTISTIC DIR CTOR On March 11, 2020, many of us gathered in the lobby of this theatre, where I announced the upcoming season – my first curated line-up as the new Artistic Director of Long Wharf Theatre. The season included a world premiere, a reimagined classic, and a revival of a Tony Award-winning musical. I remember feeling so energized about the future ahead, as we envisioned a new chapter for our beloved theatre. And then, just two days later, the world shut down and like everyone else, we had to cancel, delay, and reimagine our work. The line-up I shared that afternoon also included a thrilling new voice in Madhuri Shekar. I was introduced to Madhuri by Mia Katibak, the co-founder and visionary leader of NAATCO (National Asian American Theatre Company) based in New York City. She handed me Queen and I devoured the script in one sitting. We committed to producing the play together. When it came time to plan this season, I knew we had to return to this story and this partnership. Queen is a remarkable new American play. We journey with two women, on the verge of a major scientific breakthrough, when they are faced with an ethical dilemma and must suddenly hold truth and temptation in equal measure. But the project of the play goes further: in a field dominated by men, Madhuri centers women in STEM and investigates what it means when they are asked to sacrifice their values, their education, and their personal lives to be “seen.” Sanam is our compass and yet we see how the world pushes against her, again and again. Under the brilliant direction of Aneesha Kudtarkar, with her equally brilliant cast and creative team, this production of Queen is a remarkable achievement. I’m so proud this story concludes our 21/22 season. This production also marks the launch of a historic and important national initiative led by NAATCO. As a New York theatre committed to supporting Asian-American theatre artists, NAATCO is expanding their reach by partnering with theatres across the country to amplify the voices of their community. Long Wharf Theatre is proud to be their inaugural partner, producing Queen here in New Haven prior to its Off-Broadway debut in June, working together to make the American theatre a more inclusive place for all. I am deeply grateful to Mia and Peter Kim, NAATCO’s Creative Producer, for their collaboration on this project. I think back on that afternoon of March 11th often. What we thought might be a few weeks of isolation turned into something we are still navigating – in other words, we are still trying to make sense of this unthinkable time. And yet here we are, gathered in community, to experience a story together. What a testament to the healing power of theatre. Long Wharf Theatre is embarking on a new chapter, one that builds on our history of innovation, possibility, and creative excellence. I remain energized about the future ahead and hope you’ll join us on this historic journey. ROM T E DIRECT OR the loss of the honey bee would be catastrophic for the human race.
When this play was originally programmed at Long Wharf, the world looked very different. It was January of 2020 – we weren’t all quietly singing “Happy Birthday” to ourselves while washing our hands, I knew very little about bees, and even less about Bayesian statistics. I now know that Bayes’ Law describes the probability of an event, based on prior knowledge of conditions that might be related to the event. Seems simple enough, but I think we’ve all had at least one moment over the last two years where we found ourselves desperately squinting at a graph or chart and asking: what story do these numbers tell us? How reliable are they? And can I actually trust these probabilities separate from my own personal experience? We rely on honey bees for onethird of the food we consume. They are the primary pollinators for almonds, blueberries, melons, pumpkins, squash, gourds, the list goes on. Scientists have debated for decades the vulnerability of the species, but the fact remains that 6

When we first meet Sanam and Ariel, two Ph.D. candidates at UC Santa Cruz, they think they’ve solved Colony Collapse Disorder and they’re riding high. They’re about to publish their research in the most respected scientific journal in the country and they’re ready to take on Monsanto. However, as their publication deadline looms, it becomes clear that their data is no longer telling a simple story. They’re faced with an ethical dilemma. Over the course of the play, Sanam and Ariel’s friendship is tested and pushed to the brink. They come to recognize a simple and radical fact: in a cut-throat academic world that would seek to pit them against each other, they are stronger together than apart. We humans have done so much damage to the natural world. When I think of the work that lies ahead, we could stand to learn a thing or two from honey bees. They discover, communicate, adapt, and prioritize the survival of their community over the survival of the individual. A worthy lesson indeed.

Padrón, Artistic Director; Kit Ingui, Managing Director) is a Tony Award-winning company of international renown. It was founded on the notion that New Haven deserves an active culture that is locally created, supported by community leaders and patrons of the arts. It is recognized for a historic commitment to commissioning, developing, and producing new plays and musicals that have become a part of the modern American canon. NAATCO (National Asian American Theatre Company) NAATCO was founded in 1989 by Richard Eng and Mia Katigbak to assert the presence and significance of Asian American theatre in the United States, demonstrating its vital contributions to the fabric of American culture. NAATCO puts into service its total commitment to Asian American theatre artists to more accurately represent onstage the multi- and intercultural dynamics of our society, demonstrating the abilities of Asian American theatre artists to reach across ethnic boundaries to illuminate abiding characteristics of human nature, and to reflect and emphasize the kinship of disparate cultures. NAATCO does not say that we are all the same, but rather that we have large areas of understanding.

ABOUT NNPP About the NAATCO National Partnership Project (NNPP): In 2020 our colleagues at NAATCO (National Asian American Theatre Company) announced a bold new initiative to ensure the inclusion of Asian American people in the full scope of theatre making. Long Wharf Theatre is honored to be one of the first theatre companies to bring this initiative to life with our production of Queen. It is a clear example of how we can put all three of our core pillars into action: radical inclusion, artistic innovation, and kaleidoscopic partnerships. Our partners at NAATCO have this to say about the NAATCO NNPP: In 2020 NAATCO instituted the NAATCO National Partnership Project (NNPP) to establish rigorous relationships with theatres around the country to ingrain strategies for the inclusion of Asian American theatre artists, technicians, and administrators in our partners’ practices. With our partners, we collaboratively select a production guided by NAATCO’s programs; plan pre- or post-performance events supplementing the production and highlighting Asian or Asian American panelists and speakers; institute a plan for outreach to Asian Americans in the community to encourage their participation in all aspects of our partners’ operations; and take next steps towards sustaining Asian American presence in their programming by announcing one or more productions of new Asian American plays for the upcoming seasons. NAATCO is proud to have Long Wharf Theatre as an anchor partner.
