As we reflect on 2025, we are reminded once again of the extraordinary power that emerges when young people are given the chance to lead. At 21st Century Leaders, we have always believed, without judgment and without exception, that every student has the potential to be a great leader. This year, that belief was not only affirmed; it was put on full display.

One of our proudest moments came as we celebrated our inaugural cohort of 28 high school students earning the nation’s first-ever Leadership Certificate from Emory University’s Goizueta Business School. This groundbreaking partnership demonstrates what is possible when institutions come together with a shared commitment to elevate youth voices through innovative education. These young leaders didn’t just complete a program, they helped set a new national standard for what leadership development in high school can look like.

In 2024-2025, our commitment to empowering young people also extended far beyond the classroom. The City of Atlanta, in partnership with 21CL, was selected from more than 100 cities across the world to participate in the Youth Climate Action Fund, funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, in collaboration with the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Sustainability & Resilience. Through this initiative, we awarded $120,000 in microgrants to 30 youth-led project teams, ages 15–24, directly mobilizing 1,500 young people across metro Atlanta. These projects advanced the City of Atlanta’s sustainability and resilience goals while proving, once again, that young people are not waiting for the future—they are building it.

As we celebrate these achievements, we also honor a year of meaningful leadership transition. After years of dedicated service and visionary guidance, Dr. DeRetta

Rhodes concluded her tenure as Board Chair at the end of this fiscal year. Her leadership strengthened our mission, deepened our impact, and supported our continued growth and culture. We are grateful for her commitment, passion, and leadership.

We are equally honored to welcome Chris Reynolds as our incoming Board Chair as of October 2025 for Fiscal Year 2026. Chris brings a passion for community, a deep belief in young development, and a long-standing commitment to 21CL’s mission. We look forward to the new energy, ideas, and strategic insight he will bring to this next chapter.

For me personally, this year is also bittersweet. After nearly 12 years of service, I transitioned out of my role as Executive Director in December 2025. It has been an absolute privilege to walk alongside our students, alumni, partners, and supporters—and to witness the transformative power of believing in young people wholeheartedly. 21CL has never been just an organization, it has been a family committed to possibility, equity, and the boundless capacity of youth.

As we close the 2024-2025 year, 21CL remains steadfast in our vision: to create spaces where every young leader is seen, supported, and inspired and empowered to succeed. Thank you for believing in them and in us.

In 2009, I arrived for my first 21st Century Leaders’ summer leadership institute as a student who was uncomfortable with public speaking and unsure of what my future would hold. I left that summer more confident, more inspired, and newly aware of what was possible for me.

That experience planted the seeds for the career I have today. The spark 21CL helped ignite ultimately led me to a thriving career as a global brand leader. Before I had the title or the résumé, 21CL helped me see myself as a leader and showed me how exposure, mentorship, and belief can change a trajectory. Giving back to the organization that gave so much to me has been incredibly meaningful. Connecting with students and supporting them through their own journeys of self-discovery reminded me just how powerful alumni involvement can be.

21st Century Leaders® is a nonprofit organization that connects, transforms, and inspires high school students across Georgia to leverage and promote diversity and inclusion, explore career opportunities, and become leaders in their schools, communities, and ultimately the workforce.

High school students across Georgia can join 21st Century Leaders through any of our three premier programs: Leadership Connect, 21CLubs, and our Summer Leadership Institutes.

Student Programs

21st Century Leaders delivers dynamic, hands-on leadership development experiences for high school students, guided by a network of dedicated staff, accomplished alumni, subject matter experts, and corporate partners. Students from across Georgia can engage with 21CL through one of three flagship programs: Leadership Connect, 21CLubs, or the Summer Leadership Institutes. Becoming a 21st Century Leader opens the door to a broader ecosystem of experiences designed to spark purpose, build confidence, and cultivate a lifelong commitment to leadership and service.

Leadership Connect

Established in 2014, Leadership Connect is 21CL’s interactive online learning platform designed to make high-quality leadership development training accessible, engaging, and rewarding for students anywhere in Georgia.

Yes, my ranking may have changed since starting this program because I have gained new insights, developed stronger leadership skills, and learned to apply my values in real-world situations. Growth and experience often shift our perspectives, helping us better understand our strengths and areas for improvement.”

The tools and strategies I’ve learned, like empathy, reflective practice, and decision-making techniques, have given me more confidence in applying these concepts in everyday situations. Overall, I feel more equipped to handle challenges, communicate effectively, and make decisions that consider both my own and others’ emotional well-being.”

My favorite thing about LC Level 3 was how real and practical the lessons were. It went beyond just leadership theory and focused on life skills—like financial literacy, professional communication, and building a strong digital presence. I especially enjoyed the activities that challenged me to reflect on my own habits and experiences, like creating a budget or building my LinkedIn profile. It made me feel more prepared for life after high school and gave me tools I’ll actually use in college and my career.”

My greatest takeaway from this capstone experience was the knowledge I gained through Leadership Connect across all the levels. This has been a major accomplishment for me. Goizueta Business School, Emory University

Leveraging a partnership of nearly 20 years, 21st Century Leaders and Emory University’s Goizueta Business School launched a Social Enterprise and Entrepreneurship level of curriculum in Leadership Connect. This Level 4 capstone course is time-bound and project-based, enabling students to develop a business plan within a cohort that is coached by MBA candidates and graduates from the business school. Students pitch their business plan to judges at the end of the course.

Students who complete this program earn a Leadership Certificate from Emory University’s Goizueta Business School. This is the only program in the nation where students can earn this prestigious certificate while in high school.

IN THE 2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR, 14 COACHES AND 28 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE INAUGURAL LEVEL 4 COHORT, WITH THE WINNING TEAM FROM THE FINAL

CONNECTED: YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM (CYLP)

21st Century Leaders continues their partnership with Fulton County’s Department of Community Development’s Youth and Community Services Division to serve 200 students in Fulton County each school year with free access to Leadership Connect and special prizes like internships, tech items, event tickets, and gift cards through the Fulton County CONNECTED: Youth Leadership Program (CYLP).

ATLANTA COLLEGE & CAREER ACADEMY

21CL’s ongoing partnership with the Atlanta College and Career Academy (ACCA) continues to provide students with free access to Leadership Connect. During the 2024-2025 school year, over 300 students at ACCA are adding leadership skills to their industry pathway training through Leadership Connect, an Elevator Pitch and Mock Interview Workshop, and a Financial Literacy Workshop.

21st Century Leaders Clubs (21CLubs) are community- and school-based programs designed to build leadership and career pathway skills for students through a servant leadership mindset. Each 21CLub serves a dedicated group of students who are supported through the efforts of an advising teacher or faculty member, planning service projects and leadership forums about issues and topics important to their school and community.

The Youth Ambassadors are a motivated group of 21CL students selected through a competitive application process to represent the interests and voices of our statewide student body. Students serving in this leadership role work together to create meaningful opportunities to engage new and prospective 21st Century Leaders across Georgia through outreach, service projects, advocacy, and student-led program initiatives. All Youth Ambassadors have completed at least two levels in Leadership Connect.

As a prerequisite for the internship, students completed Levels 1-3 in Leadership Connect, our online learning platform.

As a true collaboration of business and professionals, 21st Century Leaders’ partnerships and volunteer involvement is a big part of what makes 21CL special. Our programs would not be possible without their support, talent, and commitment to the development of youth leadership.

Between the valuable time of volunteers and in-kind donations, 21st Century Leaders received over a quarter of a million dollars of in-kind support during the year. In addition to volunteer hours, 21CL received in-kind support of food, beverages, venue space, and program supplies, which enabled us to deliver highquality experiences to our participants.
