grunge

, genre of rock music that flourished in the late 1980s and early ’90s and, secondarily, its attendant fashion. The term grunge was first used to describe the murky-guitar bands (most notably Nirvana and Pearl Jam) that emerged from Seattle in the late 1980s as a bridge between mainstream 1980s heavy metal–hard rock and postpunk alternative rock.Influenced by punk rock, by the hardcore-punk inheritors of its do-it-yourself ethic such as Hüsker Dü, and by the sound of 1970s heavy metal bands such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC, grunge came to fruition on Seattle’s independent Sub Pop record label as Mudhoney, Nir vana, Screaming Trees, and Soundgarden followed in the footsteps of the pioneering Northwestern band the Melvins. Combining guitar distortion, anguished vocals, and heartfelt, angst-ridden lyrics, Nirvana and Pearl Jam won a rapidly increasing audience, moved to major labels, and released multimillion-selling albums.LIn the wake of their success, Seattle—already experiencing an economic boom as a result of the Microsoft Corporation’s expansive growth—became a magnet for record executives looking for the next big thing. As the media spread the word, grunge became an international fad, and American department stores soon had sections of grunge clothing—knockoffs of the flannel shirts, thermal underwear, combat boots, and stocking hats favoured by Seattle bands and their fans. Eventually, grunge faded—partly because of the death in 1994 of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, who had become a generational spokesman, but also because of the disappointing record sales by many of the bands from Seattle who never did become the next big thing. Nevertheless, grunge

FROM GARAGE TO WORLDWIDE.

Between 1988 and 1990, the tight-knit group of Seattle bands went through many transformations.

Green River split into two groups: the members who wanted to stay “underground” formed Mud honey, while those who wanted to become famous rock stars formed Mother Love Bone (picking up the lead singer from Malfunkshun, Andrew Wood).

Representing another shift in those values of noncon formity, Soundgarden signed in 1988 with a mainstream label, A&M

At the start of the new decade, Mother Love Bone was set to become the rock stars they intended to be when Wood unexpectedly died of a heroin overdose. Wood’s roommate, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, wrote a tribute to his late friend. A few songs played with the surviving Mother Love Bone members turned into an entire album, Temple of the Dog. When Cornell decided that one of the songs would be better as a duet, he invited a backup vocalist, Eddie Vedder, to join him for the singing of ‘Hunger Strike.’ The same year, Vedder joined the remaining Mother Love Bone

In 1990, Nirvana consisted only of singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic, and were yet to find a full-time drummer. They were eventually ntroduced to Dave Grohl through their friends the Melvins, becoming anoth er staple grunge band of the ’90s made possible through collaboration. The bands became regulars at music venues across the city, performing at locations still open today such as The Crocodile and The Showbox. Before any of the bands really left Seattle, they described themselvesinself-deprecating ways, referring to themselves and their music style as dirt, scum and – you guessed it –grunge. In 1991, when Nirvana reached number one on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart, with Pearl Jam following closely behind, “grunge” turned from a joke into an actual descriptor of the rock music subgenre characterized by guitar distortion, feedback

There really is no question about this: Nirvana were –and still are – the biggest grunge(opens in new tab) band on the planet. Grunge itself is a term that comes with a fair amount of contention, as its defining qualities borrowed from the ferocity of punk, the down-tuned dirge of metal and pop’s irresistible songwriting nous, which has lead some to claim grunge isn’t a genre in its own right at all, or dismiss it as a cynical marketing term. But if people tell you that Nirvana were a punk band, an alt.rock band, a pop band, you shouldn’t listen to them. Nirvana weren’t just a grunge band. Nirvana weregrun

Are Nirvana Grunge ?

In their best-known formation, Nirvana was made up of singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain, drummer Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic. Cobain and Novoselic met at high school in Aberdeen, Washington, where the band was originally based. Cobain was Nirvana’s chief songwriter, wrote all their lyrics and almost all of their music – though Grohl and Novoselic both contributed to Nirvana’s music, as on Aneurysm, which was a co-write by all members of the band. Grohl also wrote the Heart-Shaped Box B-side Marigold himself.

Who were the members of Nirvana?

Chad Channing is widely accepted as Nirvana’s first “official” drummer, as he performed on Nirvana’s debut album, Bleach. However, there was a revolving door of drummers in Nirvana before he joined.

Bob McFadden was the first drummer to ever pick up the sticks for Nirvana, but he lasted only a month. After McFadden came Aaron Burckhard, who drifted away from the band when they moved out of Aberdeen. At this point, the band started jamming with Melvins drummer Dale Crover, who appeared on Nirvana’s first demos in 1988.

Crover left shortly after, at which point Dave Foster joined – until he got sent to jail a few months later. It was at this point that a mutual friend introduced them to Channing, who stuck around long enough to make it through the Bleach sessions. However, Cobain and Novoselic were left cold by Channing’s drumming abilities throughout the sessions.

Nirvana’s best albums?

Best is a tricky term, given its subjective nature – though of them all, Nevermind is the definitive Nirvana album, and historically the most important. Nirvana only officially recorded three albums in their time as a band: Bleach in 1989, Nevermind in 1991 and In Utero in 1993. Nevermind is by far Nirvana’s best-selling album, having sold over 10 million copies in the USA alone. In Utero comes in second with 5 million US sales under its belt, while debut album Bleach is the least popular –though has still sold 2 million copies in the US.

As well as these albums, Nirvana compilation album Incesticide has grown a huge cult appeal over the years.

April. 1994 Seattle , Washington , US

Kurt Cobain die Kurt Cobain died by suicide on April 5, 1994. He was discovered in his Seattle home with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and high levels of heroin and diazepam in his system. He was survived by his wife, Courtney Love, and their daughter, Frances Bean Cobain.

Cobain had a generally happy childhood until his parents divorced when he was nine years old. After that event, he was frequently troubled and angry, and his emotional pain became a subject of, and catalyst for, much of his later music. As a teenager, he moved between various rela tives’ houses, stayed with friends’ parents, and occasionally slept under bridges while he began to use drugs and take part in petty vandalism as forms of teenage rebellion.

Cobain’s death marked, in many ways, the end of the brief grunge movement and was a signature event for many music fans of Genera tion X.

Cobain was musically inclined from an early age, and in the mid-1980s he began to play with members of the local “sludge rock” band the Melvins (who

After the initial thrill of success, though, Nirvana — and Kurt Cobain in particular — quickly felt uneasy with all the attention they were getting. Cobain's new reputation as the spokesman for his generation wasn't something he embraced: At one point, he flatly told Rolling Stone that, "I'm a spokesman for myself," arguing that he was just as confused as everyone else out there and didn't have the answers people were looking for. Regardless, Cobain rapidly become a cult hero. His grungy, pissed off, down-to-earth reputation was only further enhanced by his dislike of celebrity godhood, his refusal to accept offers of limo rides, and so on.

As Nirvana became icons, though, rumors swirled that Cobain might be doing heroin. Back then, he dismissed these allegations, but time would prove them sadly accurate.

Even casual fans of Nirvana may have noticed the band's biggest hit, "Smells Like Teen Spirit," mentions guns ("Load up on guns, bring your friends"). Firearms also notably appear in "In Bloom" ("And he likes to shoot his gun") and "Come As You Are" ("And I swear that I don't

While it's obviously a stretch to call those lines foreshadowing or anything close to it, Kurt Cobain's lyrics sometimes provided insights into his experiences and inner turmoil, and guns fea tured prominently in his life.
