Tech Sector Job Growth The most encouraging metric of North Carolina’s technology industry is its recent growth and growth potential. In the past five years, jobs in this industry have grown by 20.6% in the state. That is the 3rd highest growth rate in the country and well above the national average of 10.9%.
In 2015 the tech industry employed over 239,000 people and was worth $82 billion in sales revenue in the state of North Carolina. The technology industry accounted directly for 5.8% of the total jobs in the state but almost 11% of the state’s total wage earnings and sales. In 2015, there were over 18,000 technology establishments operating in North Carolina, an increase of 1,000 from estimates in the previous report.
Economic Impact
Top Tier
The technology sector in North Carolina has an employment multiplier of 3.12, meaning that for every one job in the technology industry approximately two other jobs are supported throughout the state economy across all industries. $82 billion in sales in the technology industry supports $150 billion in sales across the North Carolina economy, accounting for over 20% of North Carolina’s sales revenue. The technology industry contributes over 18% to the overall state employment.

Research at universities is the foundation for technology transfer and innovation. North Carolina ranks #4 in the nation in dollars awarded for academic science and engineering R&D.

Tech Start-Ups The number of startups can indicate the level of entrepreneurship interest within a state’s universities. North Carolina had the 7th highest number of start-ups spin off from its universities in 2015 with 36 new companies established.

IT Sector Employment Growth The employment growth rate in IT from 2010 to 2015 for the state was 28.4%. This was the fastest growth rate across all fifty states and the district. The IT sector grew 2x faster in North Carolina than the national rate. In last year’s report, North Carolina ranked 2nd in this metric behind Utah. This year North Carolina’s growth was strong enough to beat out Utah and regional rival South Carolina for the top spot.

There are 276,000 workers in tech occupations in NC. This is higher than the 239,000 workers employed by the tech industry. This means there is a significant portion of tech occupations outside the traditional tech companies in the state.

ABOUT NCTA Driving the Growth of North Carolina’s Tech Industry Founded in 1993, the North Carolina Technology Association (NCTA) is a 501(c)(6) not-for-profit association focused on advancing the state’s tech industry. NCTA has 700+ member companies, organizations and institutions representing more than 200,000 North Carolina based employees.
NCTA has three main focus areas: Executive Engagement: Connecting Technology Providers, Consumers and Stakeholders NCTA brings together executives around the business of technology for peer interaction, educational programming, information share, relationship building and networking. We host a lineup of executivelevel programming from large events to small peer meetings across the state. Members help drive the content of our programming and can participate as an attendee, speaker, exhibitor and sponsor based on interest. Public Affairs: Providing the Voice for the Technology Industry NCTA is the go-to organization for policy makers on issues affecting the tech sector. Our public affairs efforts are guided by three principles: build relationships, educate on issues and craft and advocate forward-thinking policy. We champion legislation that provides a favorable tax and regulatory environment, encourages new ventures, and grows knowledge-based jobs in North Carolina. Members help develop the public policy agenda, host an annual Tech Day at the Legislature, and participate in sessions with state and federal officials. Knowledge Workforce: Promoting Lifelong Learning and a World-class Workforce NCTA supports the development of world-class, well-educated students and workers to make NC a hub for globally competitive companies. We provide content rich business and technology programming for employees of member organizations. Members have access to workforce and talent related discussions, information and resources. NCTA impacts K-20 education through initiatives to promote and enhance the state’s technology and educational opportunities. We also support and encourage member participation in programs to attract more students into the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) curricula.
