Located in The Percy Flowers building in Flowers, the Grocery Bag reveals a new side of a trip to the gas station: a cozy restaurant full of fresh, hot food. Known for its “Almost Famous Hot Dog,” coined by founder Tommy Fitzgerald, customers come from near and far to enjoy a classic red hot dog. Since Fitzgerald’s passing in 2020, his wife, Donna, and niece Hayley Hodge have been running the store in his honor. This year will be the 50th anniversary of its opening.
Since its opening, The Grocery Bag went from selling hundreds of hot dogs to millions. Even when COVID-19 held back thousands of small businesses, the business continued to grow. “We’ve been very blessed,” Donna said regarding the pandemic. “We were taking orders outside because people couldn’t come in.” To abide by the government’s restrictions, The Grocery Bag adapted to taking orders from customers outside and closing indoor seating. Hodge elaborated that although it was hard work physically, the results were worth it. “It was amazing to see the community still come out and support us,” she said.
It started out as a convenience store with a grill. Born and raised in Smithfield, Fitzgerald’s dream had humble beginnings. Fitzgerald sold hot dogs out of a back room with a crockpot full of chili down the road from The Percy Flowers building. “It was his vision. He never had any idea that it was going to evolve into what it has evolved into,” Donna Fitzgerald said. “He started selling hot dogs down the road, and we went from that to selling a thousand hot dogs and hamburgers a day here.” Before starting his business, Fitzgerald operated a tire business and worked on lawn mowers at the Roy Hinton Store. He also programmed computers at Winn-Dixie grocery stores. “As I walk across the parking lot to enter the doors of The Grocery Bag to start my 48th year, I found myself counting many blessings,” he wrote in a Facebook post. “I think of how fortunate I was that my second

The Grocery Bag was remodeled in 2020, and has grown substantially as a result. “The menu has evolved for what we have the space for,” Donna said. There is now a full breakfast menu for various sandwiches. A cold case for grab-and-go food has been added as well as a gift shop with handmade items. The Grocery Bag has also expanded to sell locally canned goods such as jams, sauces and pickles. “We try to make it nice for the customers so when they come in, it’s not just grabbing a hot dog and grabbing a drink. It’s an experience,” Donna said. “We still want to be known for our local, homey feel but still have a modern feel because we need to keep up with the area,” Hodge said. – Gabrielle Bryant Johnston Now Magazine

Flowers Plantation welcomes local band, Spare Change. Spare Change, based in La Grange, NC, is one of the Southeast’s most well- known and respected party bands. Their diverse playlist makes them an instant crowd sensation. From rock, country, beach, funk, rap, current Top 40 hits, and classic rock, Spare Change is sure to play a favorite of all persons attending. With five singers (including a female), two guitarists, piano/synth, drums and bass, and even a mandolin player, their range and versatility is unmatched. SMITHFIELD’S CHICKEN N’ BARBEQUE CELEBRATES ITS HISTORICAL NEW LOCATION A CLASSIC HOUSEHOLD NAME IN NORTH CARLINA HAS CUT THE ROPE ON ITS NEW LOCATION IN FLOWERS PLANTATION.
S
mithfield’s Chicken ‘n Bar-B-Q ®, known for its classy barbeque and unique take on traditional Southern cuisine, now has 41 locations and counting across North Carolina. Before it became a common sight throughout the state, it had its humble beginnings in Smithfield. “My grandparents Junius Moore and Maggie Moore, they had kind of a mom-and-pop concept that they ran that was called Smithfield’s Bar-B-Q,” Junius Moore said. At first, it was a traditional barbeque joint that included a sit-down area, table service and delicious, homestyle food. “My grandfather built the first Smithfield store in Smithfield NC,” Moore said. “And then he built one in Clayton. It was called Smithfield’s BBQ at that time.” With exquisite comfort cuisine came the many customers and a kickstart of what would become a popular restaurant in North Carolina. After his father, Gregory Moore, came back from college, he was persuaded to join the family business. Soon there was a new building in Salter Path, NC. It was difficult to run at first. “It was incredibly seasonal. It was incredibly slow in the off-seasons and incredibly, incredibly busy in the on-seasons,” Moore said. His parents ran it together in the winter, but the summer required having to train a team of temporary workers.
After working through the seasons in Salter Path, Moore’s parents saved enough money to open up a new location in Jacksonville, NC. This was the first Smithfield’s Chicken n Bar-B-Q®. “Gregory Moore added ‘Chicken’ to the name,” he said. “But more than that, he really systemized and created the modern brand that we have today.” This prototype building was different from the others. It had a true functioning drive-through, that was more than a glorified pick-up window, one of the many changes made that were not common for restaurants at the time. Rather than being waited on, customers ordered at the counter and then sat down to enjoy their meals. The Jacksonville location was a major success, and it kickstarted the construction of several more thriving locations across North Carolina. By the Mid 1980s, Gregory Moore had created much of the framework for the modern franchise including creating its first operating manual, recipe book and prototype building plans and specifications. After his grandfather’s death in 1982, Moore’s father bought the remaining locations that had been owned by him and were subsequently converted to the brand systems. From there, steady growth in business sprouted more restaurants across North
Carolina. “We’ve tried to build out slowly but surely, adding a store or two a year,” he said. Since then, the business has evolved into a steadily growing chain that aims to have a polished, classy feel. In 2008, the prototype concept of Smithfield’s Chicken n’ Barbeque was redesigned. “We want to be that fresh, fast, good-service, extremely professional brand,” he said. To keep up with the trend, the company is focused on evolving its older stores to match the modern, sleek look of the new ones. “In the last seven or eight years, we’ve torn down and rebuilt old locations with the new prototype.” Customers have shown a strong increase in satisfaction as a result. Even better, the original Jacksonville location is being rebuilt with this new appearance. In April of 2018, Luther Starling was appointed president and has been influential in the management of the business, community relations, and the brand’s current growth trajectory. The company plans to grow out of North Carolina in the future, but the main focus for now is continuing to expand within the state.
Moore is stoked about the new location in Flowers. “We look forward to being a part of that community for many years to come.” The Flowers Plantation location opened on May 24, 2022. MATTAMY HOMES TEAM Meet Our New Home Counselors Jamie Matala & Stephanie Vidal Jamie is a New Jersey native and graduate of Rutgers University. She moved to North Carolina in 2007 and settled in Wake Forest with her growing family. Jamie spent the first part of her career as an elementary school teacher before joining Mattamy Homes in 2018 after transitioning to real estate. Jamie has made some great connections with her growing list of clients as well as with the communities she has worked in. Outside of work Jamie stays busy chasing her 4-year-old daughter and keeping up with the boys in the house that include husband Kyle, sons Braden and Chase, and maltipoos Buster and Clyde.
Stephanie was born in New Jersey but grew up in Miami, the 305. She graduated from Florida International University with a degree in Hospitality Management. Prior to becoming involved in real estate, she worked at American Airlines and travelled the world for 13.5 years, meeting and greeting the VIP’s that travelled through the Miami International Airport. Some of her favorite VIP’s were Robert DeNiro, President George HW Bush, Ricky Martin, Sidney Poitier, Mel Brooks to name a few. She relocated to Wake Forest in 2000 and started her real estate career in 2014 and hasn’t looked back. Stephanie has been married for 25 years and has two beautiful children, Christopher (23) and Alexa (19). Stephanie loves to travel and cook in her spare time.
