00 The concept of city has appeared since Agricultural Era. After the Industrial Revolution, the process of urbanization was greatly accelerated. Nowadays, 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas, more precisely is 4,2 million people. United Nations estimated that, a proportion expected to increase to 68% by 2050. The dense and large number of residents, concrete buildings and violent industrial activities have changed the climate of the city, which has caused the temperature of the city to increase significantly, rainfall to increase, and visibility to deteriorate. This phenomenon is called urban climate.

DIALECTICS OF DATA COLLECTION AND OBSERVATION
01 What kind of problems could urbanization cause? For example, the temperature in a big citiy rises significantly than its surrounding rural areas, and the temperature difference is usually larger at night than during the day, it is called urban heat island effect. Urban climate in a broad sense includes also water pollution, air pollution, light pollution and so on. First, I read some papers and research reports on the Internet. Second, I made field observation not only in Kiel but also in Hamburg. Then I found the two topics I was most interested in: air pollution and light pollution.
Air pollution is far-reaching.
Air pollution is often invisible.
Automobiles and factories emit most of the NO2.

NO2 causes acid rain, leads to human disorder like macular degeneration and diabetes.
People tend to overlook the severity of air pollution.
Even if you stay indoors, aerosols can still pose a health hazard to you.
4.6 million people were died from causes attributable to air pollution each year.
Light is considered beautiful and progressive in modern society.
Nowadays, people can hardly see the stars in the city.
Overlight affects the physiological clock of animals and plants, also causing irreversible damage to them.
LIGHT POLLUTION
Light may come from all directions.
Thinking about the direction of light can help us design better lighting system.
Winter is particularly long in North Germany. So people need a lot of artificial light after sun goes down.
Induction lamp could reduce light pollution.
DEFINITION
AWARENESS OF URBAN CLIMATE
02 For the topic of urban climate, we must bring together all parties to change the problem. According to the theory of cognitive psychology, people first perceive the seriousness of the problem from the surrounding environment or suggestions form others, and then generate motivation to change. I researched different design cases and found that most of the designs did not make a huge difference to urban climate, but they made users aware of the problem and participated in it, which I am very interested in. Therefore, I focused my design on making people aware of the urban climate.

FINDING BEAUTY IN THE CITY
03 After I defined my design point as making people aware of the urban climate, I found that visualization of air pollution and light pollution is a good direction. Especially the positive site of it. For example, I used gestalt psychology as a form of light, to show the beauty of darkness. Photo on the left is one of my concept that named „Chasing fireflies“, I used induction lamps to keep bicycle lanes dark. When the bicyclist rides on the lane, he can see fluorite in the distance flickering like fireflies.
This lamp shows beauty of darkness. Do you see those two faces that appeared in the dark?
How about putting a giant nose on the street as an indicator of air quality? People can judge the air quality easily by the length of snot.

04 4.6 million people were died from causes attributable to air pollution each year. Although the importance of air pollution, it is hard to directly aware of that. Air pollution is a systemic issue: solving this problem will not happen overnight. In my opinion, the first step is to make people notice the influence of air pollution. How long have you not looked up and stared at the sky when walking on the city streets? Is it still the blue sky as expected? Or is it blinded by dirty fog? Although there are various apps and websites today, with the latest data every day, they are not as convincing as a beautiful blue sky. Visualizing of air pollution and make my design enter the real life of urban residents is my main direction of design this semester, and it is named Blue Sky Project. I set the field in the city where I live, Kiel, and hope to expand from Kiel to another cities. I targeted the group and key elements then started designing. Blue sky project is a systematic project with two facets, cabin and umbrella.

I collected the beautiful sky scene of Kiel, from Apr. 2019 to Jan. 2020 and then I extracted the blue sky pantone.

CABIN
05 As a cabin that convey the spirit of Blue Sky Project, it should be simple, attractive and relaxing. First of all, it was set to standby a street, that many people passed by. Further, I posted the blue sky pantone in the cabin, and opened a window above it. Through the transparent glass, people can look up at the sky. Compared with the surrounding blue sky pantone, people clearly aware the color change of the sky everyday. When people are curious about the sky and eager to get more information, they can move to the information board to get information to protect themselves, Moreover, they also get some methods against air pollution.
ARCHETYPE Before I started making archetype, I asked myself what kind of cabin to build. I referenced the building Tree-Ness House of Akihisa Hirata. Then designed an open dodecahedron as form. This cabin was determined to reach at least 50 persons per day, that means it should be placed at the crossroads or a place near public tranportation. Therefore, I took a look on Kiel‘s city map and found the intersection of bus station and traffic light. I used laser cutting technology to make 5 different size of cabin in a short time, their height are 2.4m, 2.6m, 2.8m, 3m and 3.2m. I also made a 1:1 archetype to test if the cabin is comfortable and spacious enough. Finally I decided to make a three-meter high cabin.

06 Blue sky umbrella bases on the same concept with cabin, that people can see the actual sky through the transparent opening. Moreover, it contains a sharing system. People could find blue sky umbrella in corner of the city and carry away for free. After using it, people leaves it for another people and spread the spirit of blue sky project.

MORE THAN DESIGN
07 Nowadays, the problems that people encounter are more explosive and broader than before. As a way to solve problems and explore future, design must be integrated with other disciplines, such as biology, civil engineering, urban planning, atmospheric sciences and so on. The role that designers can play in a team will be more complicated. They should develop observation and imagination, as well as care for people, society and the environment, to become a project manager and a pilot who lead the team to find directions. Thanks to my professors, Prof. Frau Mรถllring and Frau Beyer, they gave me inspiring suggestions and thinking from a professional perspective. Also thanks to my dear classmates, they always gave me the kindest help. I am gold to dig into this important topic with them. Last but not least, I will remeber that always be curious and kind on my way to becoming a designer.
