2026 Tees Red Max Private Treaty Bull Sale

Page 1

welcome from The Tees Family

We want to thank our customers who, after 25 years of using our genetics through the Soderglen program, have continued to trust our program for their bull needs. Our 2025 private treaty catalogue bull sale was a great success, with the bulls selling into some of the top commercial cowherds across Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The Max cattle were built with disciplined breeding of industry-leading Simmental sires on purebred Angus cows. Using the strengths of each breed, the Maternal Angus Cross (MAX) offered the commercial cattleman bulls with performance and growth while maintaining the maternal strength that made Angus the base of so many cowherds. The use of Max bulls offers the commercial cowherd all the benefits of heterosis without the challenge of managing the changes in phenotype created by the use of purebred parents. The use of hybrid bulls simplifies a crossbreeding system. Heterosis affects all maternal traits, so we know the MAX cows will have higher average lifetime productivity than their purebred dams.

Simply put, the Max bulls offer increased growth and carcass value while maintaining the calving ease and maternal strength required by the commercial cow herds of western Canada.

Our cows are run the same as many of our customers’ commercial programs. Calving starts in late April, and we expect 80% or more cows to calve in the first cycle. The cows are rotated through a mix of seeded and native pasture until early December, with calves having been weaned in November. The cows will graze standing corn or swath grazing until February or March, depending on yield, before being fed a silage ration until the start of calving.

The bull calves are backgrounded the same as our steers through their first winter. The bull calves face a strict culling standard based on their phenotype, structure, and growth, with only the best bulls making the cut. We rotate the yearling bulls through good-quality pastures, allowing them to exercise and grow while maintaining the soundness to breed cows for years to come. In the fall, we put the sale bulls on feed to gain 2.5 lbs per day, allowing them to grow without excessive fat levels.

You will notice we have on offer some ¾ Angus bulls, they are raised by breeding Max cows to a Red Angus sire. The ¾ Angus bulls are excellent for maternal programs focusing on heifer quality and moderate cow size.

In 2025, ranchers were blessed with very strong markets, which have continued into 2026. We’ve seen very good bred cattle demand, and the early bull sales have been strong. The good prices of feeder cattle this year have shown how the producers who invest in quality breeding stock have been well rewarded. It pays to invest in quality bulls, impacting the feeder calves we sell and the quality of heifers retained in the herd. With that in mind, we are proud to offer this set of top-quality, 2-year-old bulls at prices we feel offer our customers a great value.

For your convenience, we offer this catalog to allow you to evaluate the bulls that would work best for you. Please feel free to call or text me with any questions. I’d be glad to learn about your herd and discuss the bulls on offer. Matt and Ronda Tees (403) 358-1035

from SODERGLEN

The Tees family is a story of a family succeeding in the cattle business. Matt and Ronda tees were an integral part of the Soderglen team and our only cooperator. They purchased their first bull from Soderglen in 2000 and shortly after that a partnership was formed with them purchasing some our purebred cows so they could produce MAX bulls for us. Matt is a hands-on, self-made operator and uses data to breed better cows and lessen his cull rate on bulls coming to the ranch. They love breeding and feeding cattle and understand the practical side of the business and how it relates to breeding better cattle for our customers. They were our only cooperator herd, running Red Angus and Red MAX cows. Matt, who a lot of you know, as he was one of our sales team members and was on the road visiting our customers. We were proud to be partners with them for 25 years and you couldn’t have asked for better partners or friends. We wish you all the best on continuing on the Red MAX Program, there is no doubt you will be successful. To our past customers, Matt and Ronda Tees will take care of your bull needs from a customer service and quality standpoint and continue on Soderglen’s commitment to excellence in the bull business.

Success breeds Success

Border Collies

Our border collies are a core part of the team, and we could not get by without them. The dogs are critical to allowing us to manage and move cattle throughout the year. Whether moving pastures, sorting cattle or loading trucks having well-bred dogs allows us to handle cattle in a quiet and controlled manner. We breed and train border collies with a focus on confident talented dogs that can handle the long days of work required. We have stud dogs available for breeding and pups or started dogs for sale from time to time.

Tuff has been a mainstay on the ranch over the years as well as being successful competing in cattle dog trials. In June 2024 he won the Desert Dwellers Horseback class as well as the Desert Dwellers Horseback Grand Champion. He followed this up in July by winning the 2024 Canadian Cattle Dog Association Horseback Champion.

Hank is a young dog who I’ve enjoyed training, and he has become a go to for the tough jobs and long days moving cattle. Extremely confident turning a head, Hank works his stock with a calm manner. Hank is a great outrunner who can be counted on to come back with the stock he is sent for. One of Hanks strengths is his calm mind and resilient nature, he doesn’t get upset when tackling a tough job.

Mae is a young dog who we were fortunate to purchase this summer. At only 2 years old she has been consistently placing well in cattle dog trials, which comes as no surprise as she follows in the footsteps of her sire, Peter Gonnet’s JR Pancho. Mae approaches every job with confidence and determination, always wanting to listen and work as a team. As she has gained experience doing the daily ranch work, Mae has shown that she’s a great at the trial or the ranch.

We are expecting a spring litter from Tuff x Mae, please reach out if you are interested in a puppy.

MAX - Maternal Angus Cross OVER 30 YEARS IN THE MAKING

Soderglen has spent 30 plus years breeding Hybrid cattle and you can be assured you are investing in the most elite hybrid program Canada has to offer.

We are continually striving to improve the breeding value of our herd to better suit the needs of our customers. We do not base our herd on single trait selection but rather on balanced multiple-trait selection. We believe that to get maximum production there has to be a fine balance between maternal trains for calving, reproduction and growth agains carcass and gain traits. We very specifically select the cattle used to create this breed and it goes much further than simply crossbreeding Simmental and Angus cattle. The MAX Program at Soderglen is a Program that we were extremely proud of and we believe the success of the Program is due to the demand for the type of cattle we strive to achieve with this MAX breed. Simply put, MAX bulls and females just plain work for our customers.

Carcass Makers

Research has long shown that maximum heterosis is achieved with a well managed 3 breed cross. Some of our customers prefer to breed their top cows, Max, to retain quality heifers and breed a portion of their cows to a bull for terminal crossbreeding, focusing on growth and weaning weight. For this reason we have crossed a few Max cows Charolais. These bulls will cross great on red cow herds and offer the increased growth and muscle you want while maintaining the calving ease that we all need. These bulls are appropriate for improving weaning weights on your mature cows.
