s The National Benefit Fund believes it is a “grandfathered health plan” under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (the Affordable Care Act). As permitted by the Affordable Care Act, a grandfathered health plan can preserve certain basic health coverage that was already in effect when that law was enacted. Being a grandfathered health plan means that this plan may not include certain consumer protections of the Affordable Care Act that apply to other plans, for example, the requirement for an external review process for claims appeals. However, grandfathered health plans must comply with certain other consumer protections in the Affordable Care Act, for example, the elimination of lifetime limits on benefits. Questions regarding which protections apply and which protections do not apply to a grandfathered health plan and what might cause a plan to change from grandfathered health plan status can be directed to the plan administrator at (646) 473-9200. You may also contact the Employee Benefits Security Administration, U.S. Department of Labor at (866) 444-3272 or www.dol.gov/ebsa/healthreform. This website has a table summarizing which protections do and do not apply to grandfathered health plans.

Benefits Update & News
New Benefit for NBF Wage Class III and GNY Eligibility Class III Thanks in part to the 1199SEIU members who fought so hard for healthcare reform, beginning this year, many Americans without access to comprehensive benefits like ours can finally afford health coverage. The Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) Health Insurance Exchanges offer a low-cost coverage option for workers whose employers don’t offer health benefits – and even provide an opportunity for part-time 1199SEIU workers who don’t have full coverage through a spouse or another job to complement their limited Fund benefit.
As of April 1, 2014, part-time members in the Wage or Eligibility Class III plans (WC/EC III) will also have a new benefit that can supplement a primary healthcare plan. For the first time, the WC/EC III benefit will include dental coverage, and the hospitalization benefit will be replaced with a limited hospital indemnity plan. WC/EC III members will still be covered for other benefits they currently receive, such as vision, life insurance and disability.

Accessing Comprehensive Medical Coverage through a Health Insurance Exchange
Fuentes: MedPage Today; Science Daily
Wage/Eligibility Class III members who don’t have full health coverage through a spouse or another job can purchase a plan through a Health Insurance Exchange. Depending on family size and household income, you may be eligible for a subsidy to help pay the premium for the Exchange plan. This is important because if you don’t have a primary healthcare plan, you will be subject to a penalty. Anyone who chooses to buy a plan on an Exchange must enroll by the 15th of the month so that coverage begins on the 1st of the following month. For more information, visit www.nystateofhealth. ny.gov or call (855) 355-5777 in New York; if you need assistance enrolling, contact the Community Service Society at (888) 614-5400 or email them at enroll@cssny.org to schedule an appointment. In New Jersey or Connecticut, visit www.HealthCare.gov or call (800) 318-2596.
Moving Between Wage/Eligibility Classes Sometimes WC/EC I and II members temporarily drop down to WC/EC III. This can happen for a number of reasons, such as if you switch to a part-time schedule. WC/EC III members usually work fewer hours than WC/EC I and II members. If you move between Classes, there are a few things you need to know about your benefits and the Affordable Care Act (ACA). UĂŠ

These days, breakfast consists of grapefruit, whole wheat toast and coffee; lunch is typically a turkey sandwich or a salad with grilled chicken; and for dinner, Jacqueline likes to grill salmon or chicken along with fresh vegetables. Snacks are almost exclusively fruits and vegetables, she said, adding that every once in a while, she treats herself to a favorite guilty pleasure: Chinese take-out. “Now I eat healthy every day and save the burger or Chinese food for the occasional splurge.â€?
In August 2012, Jacqueline Trotman was thinking about ways she could lose weight and improve her health, so when she heard about a new UnionManagement-Fund workplace wellness program at her workplace, she was eager to get involved. She even signed up to lead a team of five 1199SEIU members in a “Lose to Win weight-loss competition. While the contest was a fun way to start adopting healthier habits, she had no idea of the lasting impact it would have on her life. By April 2013, Jacqueline, who works at Roosevelt Hospital as a Medical Office Assistant, had lost 18 pounds. She’s lost another five pounds since then, but more important to her, she has kept the weight off. “We created a healthy routine for the CHPFit program [the Continuum Health Partners’ wellness initiative] that I’ve been able to maintain, Jacqueline said. “It’s been very rewarding in all areas of my life. I have more energy – and it makes me a happier person. She has stayed active over the past two years, walking regularly on her lunch hour, after work and on weekends near her home in Brooklyn, where she lives with her 15-year-old son, Justin. But she said changes in her diet have been just as important to her success. Rather than snacking whenever she feels hungry, she

Angela Wright and Sandra Tingling, two of Jacqueline’s team members from the weight-loss contest, have continued to walk with her on their lunch break whenever the weather permits. The three friends – who like to call themselves the “CHPFit Divas – each emphasized that the support of the group makes sticking with a fitness routine a whole lot easier. “The encouragement that I get from my co-workers has helped me more than anything else, said Sandra, a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at the hospital. “I know I’m not doing this alone. Angela, who is also an LPN at Roosevelt, agreed, saying that the workplace wellness program was a great motivator and that she couldn’t have accomplished her goals without Jacqueline and Sandra’s help. She set her initial weight-loss target at 10 pounds and has lost a total of 14 by changing her diet and walking regularly.

Angela Wright and Sandra Tingling, two of Jacqueline’s team members from the weight-loss contest, have continued to walk with her on their lunch break whenever the weather permits. The three friends – who like to call themselves the “CHPFit Divas” – each emphasized that the support of the group makes sticking with a fitness routine a whole lot easier. Better nutrition has also been key to Angela’s healthier lifestyle – she usually has chicken or fish for her main meal of the day, eats a salad for lunch and has replaced soda with water. Although she hasn’t had any health problems, she has a family history of diabetes – and a 2-year-old son – so she knew the time was right to take action. “I want to be healthy to raise my son and make sure I’m still around when he’s grown,” she said. “I’ve also found out that walking is a good way to relieve stress.” Besides her lunchtime walks with co-workers, Jacqueline has incorporated other changes into her daily routine. On most mornings, she gets off the subway a stop or two early and

walks the rest of the way to Roosevelt Hospital. Once inside, she takes the stairs to the second floor rather than using the elevator. They may seem like small things, she said, but the extra steps add up. In fact, she uses a smartphone app to keep track of her daily steps and is now averaging 3,000 a day – more than she has ever done before, especially given that she works at a desk for most of the day. Her focus on fitness and nutrition has even benefited Justin, who eats a healthy dinner at home most nights and rides his bicycle alongside his mother when she power walks around their neighborhood. “I really look forward to our time together, whether it’s sitting down to eat at night or exercising on the weekends,” Jacqueline said. “I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

You may have heard the statistics: Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the nation, taking one life every 90 seconds and almost 380,000 lives each year, according to the American Heart Association. Even more frightening is that nearly 40 percent of 1199SEIU members suffer from the disease or are at risk for the condition. While these numbers seem stacked against us, you don’t have to become one of them. Here’s what you need to know about how you can help prevent – and even reverse – heart disease.

Know Your Risk Factors If you know you have any of the major reversible risk factors – you smoke; don’t get a lot of physical activity; eat a poor diet; have diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol; or are overweight or obese – make an appointment with your healthcare provider to talk about how you can start making some healthy changes.

Fuentes: Science Daily;WebMD

Stop Smoking
Though you should try to get 30 to 40 minutes of exercise a day three to four times a week, even a few minutes of moderately intense physical activity every day can make a difference: A recent study in the European Heart Journal found that just 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a week can reduce your risk of heart disease by nearly 30 percent. Get started by taking the stairs instead of the elevator or going for a walk during your lunch break. Even cleaning and other household activities have been shown to reduce your risk for heart attack.
It’s a tough habit to quit, but you’ll live a healthier, longer life if you do. Besides cutting your risk of heart disease, quitting smoking will lower your risk of dying from stroke, emphysema and lung cancer. A study in The New England Journal of Medicine found that people who quit smoking can add six or more years to their lives. Secondhand smoke exposure at home can increase nonsmokers’ risk of developing heart disease by 25 to 30 percent, so quit for your family’s health, too.

Manage Your Stress Stress raises your heart rate and your levels of the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline, which have been linked to heart disease. It can be a challenge, but finding just 10 minutes a day to yourself – and breathing deeply – can help ease your stress. Gentle stretching, exercise and getting seven or more hours of sleep a night will make a big difference, too.
Cut Back on Processed Meat Eating 50 grams of processed meat (about two slices of deli meat or one hot dog) a day has been associated with a 42 percent higher risk for heart disease, so trade the bacon, sausage and deli meat for lean chicken, turkey and fish. And for those occasional red meat meals, stick to fresh cuts like steak or lamb chops.
Skip the Sugary Beverages Studies have shown that drinking one 12-ounce sugarsweetened drink a day can increase your risk of heart disease by 20 percent. Besides soda, watch out for iced tea, fruit juice and other high-sugar beverages. Water is always your best bet.

2. Burn more calories in less time. Whether it’s walking up and down hilly streets, park steps or on the uneven surfaces of a beach or grassy field, the varied terrain of an outdoor workout can make it more strenuous than indoor exercise. In fact, walking and biking outdoors burn more calories than working out on a treadmill or stationary bike. So if you have a limited amount of time to fit in a workout – and who doesn’t? – get outside to burn those calories in less time. 3. Enjoy the health benefits of sunshine. Exposure to sunlight while exercising outdoors helps our bodies produce vitamin D, which helps maintain strong bones. A study in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that lower levels of vitamin D were a risk factor for heart disease and conditions that are often associated with it, like high blood pressure and diabetes. Besides being a good source of vitamin D, skin
exposure to the sun’s rays causes our bodies to release a compound that may reduce blood pressure, according to researchers at the University of Edinburgh.
4. Make fitness fun. If your workouts are feeling like a chore, try changing your routine by finding a new walking route or a new form of exercise. Whether you walk in a local park or use your bike to run some errands, changing your environment can make exercise seem easier and can even inspire you to go farther. Alternating your pace can also freshen up your routine: walk quickly for one block, stroll the next and repeat. Or grab a friend, co-worker or family member and catch up on each other’s lives while you work out. Spending quality time with family and friends can help put the fun back in your fitness routine. 5. Work out on your terms. Outdoor workouts can be freeing, because you set the agenda – no class schedules, no waiting in line for a treadmill or elliptical machine – and you can go outside and move any time you want. It also means that exercise can fit into your schedule, making it easier for you to stick to your fitness goals. Sources: Science Daily;WebMD

Have Fun with Meal Planning
Take Healthy Shortcuts
Make a list of your favorite meals as well as new dishes you’d like to try. For inspiration, look at a favorite cookbook, browse recipes online or ask your family members for suggestions. Once you’ve decided on your meals for the week, make a grocery list from your plan.
Of course, fresh produce is best, but if you’re shopping for the week, frozen vegetables are affordable, easy to prepare and ready when you are. And since frozen veggies are often picked at the peak of ripeness and then flash frozen, they’re often just as nutritious as the fresh variety. Try using frozen spinach in soups, adding frozen peas to casseroles or simply microwaving frozen green beans for an easy side dish.
Make Heart-Smart Swaps At the grocery store, buy low-fat cheese and skim or low-fat milk. And skip the butter or solid shortening and buy a nonstick cooking spray instead. If ground beef is on your grocery list, look for a lower-fat alternative such as ground turkey or chicken. And rather than chips and cookies, add healthy snacks, like fresh fruits and nuts, to your cart.
Read the Nutrition Label An “all-natural label doesn’t mean a food item is healthy. Before adding an item to your cart, read the nutrition label and ingredient list to make sure what you’re buying isn’t high in saturated fat, sugar or salt.
Make Meals Ahead of Time Pick up some dry or canned beans to use in soups, stews and chili. Cook these dishes in large batches to make several tasty dinners and lunches that reheat well. A big pot of black beans makes a healthy and delicious side dish, too. Prepare healthy snacks for the week by washing, chopping and storing fresh fruits and vegetables ahead of time. And be sure to stock your car and work space with shelf-stable snacks like almonds. It’s also easy to grab fruits like oranges and bananas on your way out the door.
Pay Attention to Your Plate (and Your Cup) The Healthy Eating Plate created by the Harvard School of Public Health recommends eating mostly vegetables, healthy proteins, fruit and healthy fats. It also recommends drinking water, tea and coffee rather than sugary beverages. For more information, look at the Healthy Eating Plate online: http://www. hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource.

Healthy News You Can Use
Add Nuts to Your Diet to Improve Health and Longevity It seems that peanuts, pistachios, almonds, walnuts and other tree nuts aren’t just great-tasting snacks – they could boost your health and longevity as well. A recent study in The New England Journal of Medicine found that regular nut eaters were 20 percent less likely to die over a 30-year period. Those who ate nuts were also 29 percent less likely to die of heart disease and 11 percent less likely to die of cancer. Adding nuts to your daily diet shouldn’t be a challenge. Have a serving or two of nuts each day; try a peanut butter sandwich at lunchtime or a one-ounce serving of mixed nuts as a snack. You can also add nuts to hot or cold cereals, salads or desserts. Just remember that nuts can pack a lot of calories, so be sure to stick to the recommended portions.
Get Kids Moving to Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes A recent study in the journal Pediatrics found that children and teens ages 6 to 19 who exercised three times a week at a moderate- to vigorousintensity level were less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes. The best part – it didn’t make a difference what type of exercise they did. When it comes to exercising to prevent Type 2 diabetes, it doesn’t matter how a child moves, just that they do. If you’re close enough, try walking to school a few days a week, or kick off an after-dinner 30-minute walking routine. It’ll do you both good!

Eat a Variety of Foods to Reduce Your Risk of Chronic Disease While some of us may need to supplement our diet with vitamins due to health conditions, we would be better off getting our vitamins by eating a variety of nutritious foods. According to a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, eating a wide variety of nutrient-rich foods like whole grains, beans, low-fat dairy, vegetables and fruits, along with at least two servings of seafood a week is the best way to get healthy nutrients and reduce your risk of chronic disease. Researchers found that eating a variety of foods, rather than taking vitamin supplements, was the optimal way to get the nutrients you need to stay healthy. Getting your daily dose of vitamin C from an orange rather than a pill tastes better anyway!

Give Your Baby a Healthy Head Start by Breastfeeding Breastfeeding has important health benefits for your baby – and it benefits new moms, too. Experts agree that breastfeeding your baby is one of the best decisions you can make for his or her health. In fact, according to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, breastfeeding can improve babies’ immune systems, lower their risk of developing infections, asthma and diabetes and even reduce their chance of becoming obese later in life. The benefits don’t stop there – breastfeeding is also good for new moms. It helps your body recover after pregnancy and labor, helps you bond with your baby and can lower your risk of diabetes, ovarian cancer and some forms of breast cancer. And it saves time and money, because you don’t have to buy formula and bottles. Because breast milk provides exactly what your baby needs, experts say the longer you breastfeed, the better. They generally recommend that you feed your baby only breast milk – and no formula, water or food – until about six months of age. Consult your healthcare provider for recommendations about you and your baby’s specific needs. It’s best for new moms to start nursing as soon as possible. And since breastfeeding can take some practice, it’s important to get support from doctors, nurses, lactation consultants, partners, family and friends. To help ensure you have a healthy pregnancy and get your child off to a healthy start, register for the Fund’s Prenatal Program and get practical tips on how to breastfeed successfully. The Fund’s Wellness Department also offers prenatal workshops four times a year. (See page 16 for details on the June 7 workshop.)

(See page 16 for details on the June 7 workshop.) Healthy News You Can Use

Read the Nutrition Label An “all-natural” label doesn’t mean a food item is healthy.

1. Improve your mood and self-esteem. Studies have shown that even after five minutes of moderate outdoor exercise like walking, you can see an improvement in your mood and self-esteem. And you’re apt to feel better all day long. If you exercise early in the day, you’ll get an early-morning energy boost that will help power your day.

Healthy Living

These days, breakfast consists of grapefruit, whole wheat toast and coffee; lunch is typically a turkey sandwich or a salad with grilled chicken; and for dinner, Jacqueline likes to grill salmon or chicken along with fresh vegetables.

She set her initial weight-loss target at 10 pounds and has lost a total of 14 by changing her diet and walking regularly.

Noticias Saludables Que Puede Utilizar

UĂŠ

The National Benefit Fund believes it is a “grandfathered health plan” under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (the Affordable Care Act).
