As well as a state-of-the-art four storey player and media centre. The development has transformed the historic venue into a premier sporting destination, giving the club the ability to bid for more high profile matches, including internationals. Work for this phase has been completed well in time for The Ashes return to the Old Trafford Ground in August 2013.

Chris Taylor from our Manchester office worked closely with both sourcing the best facing bricks to suit the architect’s vision and to be within budget. TM have worked hard to establish lasting relationships with the leading brick manufacturers in the UK, and are able to offer very competitive prices. Historically TM have always been very strong in the facing brick market and have unparalleled expertise of the facing bricks available and being able to deliver the correct product for the project. BDP required a red stock brick to match the current facing bricks used at the cricket ground. We always search for the best match possible, and duly delivered this time around.

The design of the new section of the ground was very intricate and required a number of special bricks. TM’s Chris Taylor worked hard with the architect to help with the design process and selection of specials. “The brief from BDP was to source a brick which would be sympathetic to the existing pavilion.
The existing brick is an imperial sized product, so emphasis was placed on the need to be able to a product in both metric and imperial sizes for the refurbishment and the new build aspect.” At the architects request the brick was modified by the manufacturer to give a more precise aris for the radial feature. Chris worked closely with the manufacturer’s design team to create the correct special bricks for the project, going the extra mile to satisfy the architect’s vision.

BDP’s design for Lancashire County Cricket Club revitalises and radically transforms the existing cricket ground to create a unique world-class setting for international cricket, at the heart of a wider sport-led masterplan. A handing over ceremony on 18 June marked the completion of the latest phase of Lancashire County Cricket Club’s £32m redevelopment with the opening of The Pavilion. Previously completed phases include the award winning venue The Point and the new Players and Media Centre.
The Pavilion is very much the emotional heart of the cricket club, and BDP worked closely with LCCC to create a sensitive balance between creating a state-of-the-art cricket venue and at the same time preserve the unique heritage of the original building, including the Long Room and iconic pitch-side turrets. In addition to restoring the distinctive red brickwork and sandstone façade of the original 1895 building, we were keen to express the new brickwork elements of the building, to further articulate the intertwining of new and old which is the project’s raison d’être. Taylor Maxwell worked closely with BDP in helping to identify and source a close match for the characteristics of the Pavilion’s original smooth red brickwork in both imperial and metric formats, for the old and new elements of the building respectively. Natural coloured flush pointed narrow-bed mortar joints were used with the imperial bricks to match the existing brickwork areas, along with sandstone banding to respect existing decorative features and cornice lines within the original pitch-side frontage. In contrast, for the distinctive new red brick stair towers we applied contrasting terracotta coloured mortar, with metric bricks and raked horizontal joints to articulate the form of the stair towers. Taylor Maxwell also assisted in helping to resolve the design requirements for special radiused bricks, used to create the distinctive curved form of the stair tower structures either side of the Pavilion entrance elevation, which echo the form-making of other building elements at the cricket ground. A third and final element of special brickwork included stack-bonded smooth black brickwork, which is utilised to the vertical ‘slots’ above the ground floor spectator concourse which bisects the building plan to articulate the separation between the new and old elements of the building, and also utilised in two brick ‘fins’ which define either side of the double-height reception space.
