Glossary. Grades
floors range of floors are created to suit a wide variety of domestic and commercial applications. Our grading structure allows you to make the right choice for your environment. TM
Prime
Rustic A
Rustic B
A specially selected clean grade with small sound knots showing minimal colour variation. These boards are taken from the centre of the tree and have a flowing grain and texture.
This grade shows a greater range of character than Natur and displays more variation in grain and colour. Larger sound / filled knots, sapwood and small filled cracks add to the depth and texture of this product.
A grade that allows for larger sound knots, colour variation, filled cracks and some dark streaks. Perfect for the appearance of a beautiful natural floor.
Unfinished
Natural Oil
Stained
Becoming very popular as the range of colours and stains increase. Supplied in its natural form, a great opportunity to stamp your own mark on the floorsTM range.
The most natural coating for wood flooring, the oil deepens the natural colour of the wood, creating a beautiful matt sheen to the surface, which is then left to cure naturally.
Stain is applied to the surface of the product by hand or machine and then buffed in, penetrating deep into the wood. The surface is then sealed with either an oil or lacquer.

Smoked
Each coating is cured under UV light, creating a slight satin sheen and a tougher surface finish. This product will not need any oiling on installation.
UV satin and matt lacquered finishes provide a smooth hard wearing surface, enhancing the natural beauty of the floor, providing a rich and warm appearance.
The timber is stored in a drying room and ‘smoked‘ for up to 3 days. During this time the wood colour deepens and creates a dark rich finish penetrating deep into the wood.

Using traditional methods the board surface is carefully tool scraped following the natural contours of the wood. The result is a gently undulating, smooth surface.
A steel brush is used to remove the soft grain from the top layer, creating a textured surface. This process enhances the natural grain and beauty of the wood.
Producing a smooth to the touch finish, our products represent the very best in quality sanded floors.
Natur A vibrant floor with some colour variation, small sound / filled knots and some sapwood. A floor with more character and grain variation. Contains a small percentage of Rustic A Grade.
Finishes
Protective layers of oil / UV oil or UV lacquers provide a beautiful, long lasting finish, perfectly suited to today‘s environment. Attention to detail counts and our ranges benefit from the most modern and technically thorough processes available.

By hand, by craftsmen. Finishing by hand gives our craftsmen control, allowing them to gently follow the twists, knots and distortions that are unique to every board. The critical element of our process is time. Deep, rich finishes have to be layered and honed over many hours and days. The creativity and knowledge of our craftsmen brings years of experience to each work bench, each board and every floor.

It’s what we do and how we do it.
...and starting with great quality allows us to finish with great quality. Simple. Our unfinished boards start their journey at either our brushing, tumbling or fuming stations . At this stage each board is quality checked to ensure the grade match is compliant to client specification.

Brushing / Oak is Oak. It is…but it’s texture and characteristics will be influenced by geography, geology and climate. Having an understanding of this enables us to machine brush our boards in a manner that accentuates the grain and dramatically exposes the harder elements within each board.

Fuming /
Tumbling / Distressing
This delicate process relies upon a reaction to the naturally occurring tannins within every piece of wood. The depth of colour is carefully controlled; the longer the process, the deeper the finish.
Ever noticed the wonderful floors in well visited stately piles and manor houses? The distressed, battered nature of every square inch, suggesting a little of its hidden history.
It allows us to create the beautiful, aged patination that would only come through years of use and wear.
Taking that look into loft and warehouse living really makes an amazing impact. After a fairly bruising process each of our boards is shaved, de-splintered, massaged and smoothed. It’s then racked and left to settle for two days‌we love the results.

The devil is in the detail. Having built the foundations, what follows for us is the exciting part, the final finish.

Staining /
Bleaching /
Almost fifty percent of our floors are stained, a process that shows the grain and figure rather than a block coating of solid colour.
Used with an iron acetate stain, bleaching allows us to lighten the natural tannins and create that mellow, silvery park bench look.
Creating our own dyes is the fun part; rusty nails, wire wool, vinegar, scintillating spices. Each product throws out a unique change to the board, and hand applied sponging allows us to follow the timbers natural patterns.
Leaving bleach on a board for twenty seconds shows us a light change in colour, overnight and the impact is so much stronger. The choice is yours.

Pasting /
Burning /
Applying a thick off-white or grey limed paste also finishes our wood with a rich, aged effect. Time left on the board is the critical consideration in our understanding of client specifications.
An unusual option but now becoming visible in some outstanding new commercial build projects. Burning is often used as a base; the burn plays with the grain and then other techniques are layered on top . The more open the grain the quicker the burn, the skill and knowledge of the craftsman is what creates the beauty.

Your floor. Your finish. Protecting our floors is as important for us as it is for you. We oil, lacquer or apply water based finishing coats which harden and form a tough wearing barrier that, if looked after, will last for years. As you would guess, it’s applied by hand and is finally buffed or rolled so that, in the final inspection, our unique floors truly reflect our great passion for wood.
