1 Er valt heel wat moois te ontdekken in deze ruim aangelegde, groene wijk. Startpunt van de wandeling is het erg mooie STATIONSGEBOUW VAN SCHAARBEEK, dat tevens het visuele eindpunt is van de monumentale as van de Koningsstraat. Die loopt van het Justitiepaleis langs het Stadspark, de Kruidtuin, de Koninklijke Sint-Mariakerk en het Gemeentehuis van Schaarbeek tot aan dit station. In dit gebouw, een echte spoorwegkathedraal, heeft architect Frans Seulen met brio een nieuwerwetse metaalstructuur vermengd met renaissance-elementen. De linkervleugel met de horlogetoren dateert van 1887, de rechtervleugel werd er zoân kwarteeuw later aan toegevoegd.
1 This airy, verdant area offers endless wonders! The walk starts opposite the beautiful STATION OF SCHAERBEEK, which is the last monumental landmark on the axis of Rue Royale, which begins at the Palais de Justice then continues past Parc Royal, the Botanique, Ăglise Royale Sainte-Marie and the town hall of Schaerbeek. The architect Frans Seulen combines Renaissance references and metal structures with panache here. This cathedral of the railways was constructed in two stages: the left wing and its clock tower in 1887 and the right-hand section nearly 25 years later.
In 1903 nam burgemeester HUART HAMOIR het initiatief om een brede laan aan te leggen tegenover het station. Heel snel ontwikkelde zich een mooie woonwijk langs deze laan die nu zijn naam draagt en beplant is met merkwaardige bomen, zoals een ginkgo biloba. Bewonder de rijke huisgevels, afwisselend in bak- en in natuursteen, zoals op NR 29 gebouwd door A. Laenen. In de 17de eeuw stond hier een buitenverblijf met de mooie naam MONPLAISIR, dat later gebruikt werd voor de jacht. Op het einde van de 18de eeuw was er een porseleinmanufactuur gevestigd en, een eeuw later, de eerste mechanische wasserij. In 1906 moest het wijken voor de nieuwe Monplaisir-wijk. Op NR 71 van de Huart Hamoirlaan staat een erg eigenzinnig huis gebouwd door LĂ©on Delune in 1912. De driehoekige erker is best origineel, met twee vensters die uitsteken boven de kroonlijst. Bewonder tevens de sgraffito onder het venster van de tweede etage.
In 1903, Mayor HUART HAMOIR had a broad avenue built, starting from the station in Schaerbeek. A residential area quickly developed. As you walk along Avenue Huart Hamoir, you can admire the remarkable trees (ginkgo biloba) and the delightful alternating brick and stone houses, such as N°29 built by A. Laenen. In the 17th century, a âchĂąteau de plaisanceâ (leisure castle) was built on the plains of MONPLAISIR. Subsequently a popular meeting place for hunting, the estate was home to a porcelain factory, then in the 19th century the first mechanical laundry in the country, before giving way to the creation of the Monplaisir area in 1906. Designed in 1912, the house built by LĂ©on Delune at 71 Avenue Huart Hamoir takes the walker by surprise. The architect designed a triangular oriel window that extends past the cornice. The crowning aedicule with its two bays is truly unexpected. Another point to admire is the sgraffito adorning the second floor.
DĂšs lâentre deux guerres, dans la partie Est se dĂ©veloppe un quartier mixte dâhabitations et de petites industries. En tĂ©moigne au N°136, cette ancienne chemiserie construite en 1921. SituĂ©e en intĂ©rieur dâĂźlot, cette fabrique a Ă©tĂ© convertie pour accueillir aujourdâhui le HOGER INSTITUUT VOOR GEZINSWETENSCHAPPEN. Le temps qui passe, lâarbre gĂ©nĂ©alogique, le couple⊠voici quelques unes des thĂ©matiques reprĂ©sentĂ©es dans la fresque (GĂ©rard Alsteens - Nora Theys) qui en anime remarquablement lâaccĂšs. 4
A deux pas de LâĂGLISE DE LA SAINTE-FAMILLE (Colles - 1937), marquant le passage vers lâancien hameau de Helmet, se situe au N°38 la Villa Regina. Briques rouges, pignon, ferronneries et dĂ©cors de faĂŻence confĂšrent un cachet historique Ă cette maison bordant le square qui porte le nom du compositeur belge François Riga. 5 De lâautre cĂŽtĂ© du square le N°8 Ă©tonne par la monumentalitĂ© du dĂŽme contrastant avec le petit clocheton quâil supporte ! 6 Au N°12, les sgraffites qui dĂ©corent cette demeure datant de 1923 (M. Delcuve) Ă©tonnent par leurs tons chauds. Des marronniers Ă fleurs blanches embellissent cette façade et viennent entourer, dans lâalcĂŽve prĂ©cĂ©dant lâentrĂ©e, un profil fĂ©minin. 7 Quelques pas dans LâAVENUE DEMOLDER permettent dâobserver la façade du N°152. Un homme et une femme alanguis encadrent la baie du second Ă©tage. Pourtant câest la jolie porte dâentrĂ©e qui retient lâattention! 8
Premier lieu dâaccueil, la porte dâune maison reçoit toutes les attentions. Ceci se vĂ©rifie tout particuliĂšrement au N°97 de LâAVENUE EMILE VERHAEREN : les visiteurs ne peuvent quâĂȘtre sĂ©duits par le soin apportĂ© au travail de ferronnerie de la poignĂ©e et du judas. Un paon, symbole de beautĂ© domine lâimposte de cette demeure portant la date de 1911 et formant avec ses voisines une belle enfilade. Ne manquez pas dâobserver les motifs de marronniers dĂ©clinĂ©s abondamment sous la corniche du N°83.
4 Op korte afstand van de HEILIGE FAMILIEKERK (1901 en 1937, architecten CollĂšs en Vandendael), op de grens met het oude gehucht Helmet, vind je op NR 38 de Villa Regina. Rode bakstenen, een trapgevel, geĂ«mailleerde tegels en ijzersmeedwerk verlenen een ouderwetse uitstraling aan deze woning gelegen aan de FRANĂOIS RIGASQUARE, genoemd naar een Luikse componist die in Schaarbeek woonde. 5 Wat een grappig contrast tussen de monumentale koepel van het huis op NR 8, aan de overzijde van het plantsoen, en het kleine klokkentorentje dat er bovenop staat! 6
Op het NR 12, gebouwd door M. Delcuve in 1923, verrassen de sgraffiti door hun warme kleuren. Kastanjelaren met witte bloesem tooien de gevel en omringen, in het portiekje, een vrouwelijk profiel. 7 Loop even de DEMOLDERLAAN in tot aan NR 152. Het zijn niet de smachtende man en vrouw van de tweede etage die de show stelen, maar wel de mooie deuringang ! 8 Logisch dat de deur, de plaats van het eerste contact, door de architect extra verzorgd wordt. Zoals op het NR 97 van de EMILE VERHAERENLAAN. Elke bezoeker werd onmiddellijk gecharmeerd door het smeedwerk van de deurklink en het judasvenstertje. Op het bovenlicht van deze woning uit 1911 prijkt een pauw, symbool van onsterfelijkheid. Samen met de aanpalende nummers vormt dit huis een bijzonder mooie straatwand. Onder de kroonlijst van NR 83 verschijnt opnieuw het motief van de bloeiende kastanjelaren. Met de straatnaam eerde de gemeente de grote dichter en kunstcriticus Emile Verhaeren, die trouwens ook een borstbeeld kreeg in het nabijgelegen Josafatpark.

1 Que de merveilles dans ce quartier aĂ©rĂ© et verdoyant ! La promenade dĂ©bute face Ă la trĂšs belle GARE DE SCHAERBEEK qui constitue le dernier repĂšre monumental dans lâaxe de la rue Royale qui dĂ©bute au Palais de Justice puis longe le Parc Royal, le Botanique, lâEglise Royale Sainte-Marie et lâHĂŽtel communal de Schaerbeek. Lâarchitecte Frans Seulen y mĂ©lange avec brio les rĂ©fĂ©rences renaissantes aux structures mĂ©talliques. Cette vĂ©ritable cathĂ©drale ferroviaire a Ă©tĂ© construite en deux temps : lâaile gauche et sa tour dâhorloge en 1887 et la partie droite prĂšs de vingt cinq ans plus tard.
3 Het hoekgebouw met de MAETERLINCKLAAN (NR 2) wordt bekroond door een mooie pergola in art deco-stijl uit 1937, en herbergt sinds 2006 de kunstschool SASASA. Meer naar het oosten ontwikkelde zich sinds het interbellum een gemengde wijk met woningen en kleine ondernemingen. Een mooi voorbeeld is De Factorij, een oude hemdenfabriek uit 1921 op nr 136, waarin vandaag het HOGER INSTITUUT VOOR GEZINSWETENSCHAPPEN gehuisvest is. Gerard Alsteens en Nora Theys zijn de kunstenaars die het fresco bij de ingang ontwierpen, met aangepaste themaâs, zoals De stamboom, Het gezin, De tijd die voorbijvliedt...

DĂšs 1903, le bourgmestre HUART HAMOIR prend lâinitiative de tracer une large avenue au dĂ©part de la gare de Schaerbeek. Un quartier rĂ©sidentiel se dĂ©veloppe rapidement. Lâavenue Huart Hamoir, que vous remontez tout en admirant les arbres remarquables (ginkgo biloba), offre une belle alternance de maisons tantĂŽt en briques tantĂŽt en pierres, Ă lâexemple du N°29 Ă©levĂ© par A. Laenen. Au 17Ăšme siĂšcle, un chĂąteau de plaisance sâĂ©levait sur les plaines de MONPLAISIR. PrisĂ© ensuite comme rendez-vous de chasse, le domaine accueillit une manufacture de porcelaines puis au 19Ăšme siĂšcle la premiĂšre blanchisserie mĂ©canique du pays pour faire place en 1906 Ă la crĂ©ation du quartier Monplaisir! DessinĂ©e en 1912, la maison construite par LĂ©on Delune au N°71 de lâavenue Huart Hamoir surprend le promeneur. Lâarchitecte y dessine un oriel triangulaire qui se prolonge au-delĂ de la corniche. Quel surprenant Ă©dicule de couronnement percĂ© de deux baies! A admirer aussi : le sgraffite qui orne le second Ă©tage.

2 Take a few steps down AVENUE SLEECKX to discover another sgraffito attributed to Paul Cauchie at N°103. Cross to the other side of the little public garden square to enjoy the view of Ăglise de la SainteFamille on one side and the station on the other. 3 A charming pergola crowns the corner building at 2 AVENUE MAETERLINCK. This Art Deco building from 1937 currently houses the SASASA ART SCHOOL.
To the east, a mixed area of dwellings and small-scale manufacturing has developed since the interwar period. The old haberdashery at N°136, built in 1921, is one example of this. Located in a perimeter block courtyard, the factory was converted to house the HOGER INSTITUUT VOOR GEZINSWETENSCHAPPEN (Higher Institute for Family Sciences) today. The passage of time, the family tree, the couple⊠these are among the subjects depicted in the fresco (GĂ©rard Alsteens - Nora Theys) that brings the entrance to life in remarkable style. 4 A short walk from ĂGLISE DE LA SAINTE-FAMILLE (Colles, 1937), you will find Villa Regina at N°38, marking the route to the old hamlet of Helmet. Red bricks, a gable, ironwork and ceramic decorations give historic style to the house, which borders the little public garden square bearing the name of the Belgian composer François Riga. 5 On the other side of the garden square, N°8 surprises viewers with the monumental scale of the dome, contrasting with the little steeple that it supports. 6 At N°12, the sgraffito designs decorating the residence, dating from 1923 (M. Delcuve), have surprisingly warm tones. Chestnut trees with white flowers embellish the façade and surround a female profile in the alcove before the entrance. 7 A few paces down AVENUE DEMOLDER and you will be able to see the façade of N°152. A languid man and woman flank the second-floor bay, but itâs the lovely front door that draws your attention! 8 As the initial place of greeting, the door of a house receives the most attention. This is especially apparent at 97 AVENUE EMILE VERHAEREN, where visitors cannot fail to be enchanted by the care taken in the ironwork of the handle and the peephole.
