40 Years of Making a Difference

Zonta International, from donations to the Zonta Foundation for Women, has provided advancements, opportunities and a better world for women and girls across the globe. Below are just a few of our many projects and programs that have helped progress our mission for the last four decades. See the complete list on our History Page.

1985

The Zonta Foundation for Women was created to carry out Zonta International's charitable service efforts, raising and overseeing funds to support and promote the organization's global service programs.

1986-1988

The Training Women as Health Promoters project in Argentina focuses on training 500 women as primary health care promoters to provide services primarily in rural areas, in partnership with UNIFEM.

The long-standing Well Water project in Sri Lanka, in cooperation with UNICEF USA, concludes after providing safe drinking water to 350,000 dry zone settlers since 1982.

1990-1992

The Agricultural Training of Young Rural Women project in Togo, in cooperation with UNIFEM, trains 256 women in agricultural practices and participation in community and national development.

1992-1994

The Enhancing Opportunities for Women in Development project in Ghana involves 3,600 participants and sets up 90 community credit committees to offer revolving loans to women in connection with UNIFEM.

The Gender, Women and Development program, in cooperation with UNIFEM in Guatemala and Central America, connects approximately 275,000 women through training programs, manuals and brochures.

1996-1998

The Girls’ Education Project in South Africa supports the South African government's efforts to develop public policies to increase access, improve attendance, and enhance learning among primary school students, in partnership with UNICEF USA.

The Prevention of Female Genital Circumcision (FGC) Project in Burkina Faso expands education, training, and awareness to reduce incidences of FGC, in cooperation with UNICEF.

2000-2004

Reinventing India: Preventing Violence Against Women and Girls project with UNIFEM institutes a multi-faceted approach to violence prevention, focusing on the availability of information and raising awareness of the role of men in preventing gender-based violence.

2004-2008

Mata Masu Dubara (Women on the Move): MicroCredit and Health Education for HIV/AIDS-Affected Women in Niger with CARE reduces the risk of HIV/AIDS and its physical, social and economic consequences for at least 5,100 women and children.

2008-2018

Zonta International launches two long-term projects: Reduction of Obstetric Fistula in Liberia with UNFPA and Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV and Gender-Based Violence in Rwanda with UNICEF USA (ending in 2016). In Liberia, more than 1,000 women and adolescent girls receive treatment and more than 200 fistula survivors completed the rehabilitation programs. Rwanda eliminates mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

Zonta International teams up with UN Women and WAGGGS for the Voices Against Violence: Non-formal Education Curriculum project, preventing and reducing gender discrimination and violence against women and girls through non-formal education and youth engagement and leadership in 12 countries.

Let us Learn Madagascar, with UNICEF USA, ensures more children, particularly girls, have access to post-primary education and stay in school.

2018

Zonta International joins the Global Programme to End Child Marriage as a partner with UNICEF USA and UNFPA, bringing together a collective community effort to prevent girls from marrying too young and to support those already married as girls.

2024

The Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship celebrates its 85 Anniversary. The Young Women in Public Affairs Award is renamed the Zonta Young Women in Leadership Award. The new Zonta Women in Business Leadership and Zonta Women in STEM Awards launch.

2024-2026

Zonta International supports three current projects: Laaha, the first-ever digital web-based platform in partnership with UNICEF, replicates the sense of a safe social network through moderated peer-to-peer connections. ClimateEmpower supports interwoven innovative approaches and community-driven practices in Madagascar, Mozambique, and South Sudan in partnership with UNFPA. The Global Programme to End Child Marriage, launched by UNFPA and UNICEF, enters its third phase and continues as Zonta’s signature program.
