The Power of Music A Holistic Journey in Dealing With

It is coming up to the seven year anniversary of the passing of my Father on November 25th. He passed from colon cancer and dementia. What a valiant battle he fought. In my Dad's honour, I am currently working on a documentary , and there are several out there, but this is my own personal experience with how music helps people living with dementia.

When my Dad, Geoffrey Charles Wright first had to go into care, I noticed that when the lovely people who volunteered their time to come and entertain the residents, singing and playing instruments, their faces lit up , their toes were tapping and those who were non commutative were singing every single word! One of my Dad's neighbors across the hall would play the piano and my Dad would sing his heart out,

evoking such wonderful memories to a man who could not remember if it was four pm or four am and towards the end, how to accomplish small daily tasks. This was very difficult to watch as he was a world champion duathlon competitor. We would watch old Christmas and War movies that he had seen countless times , but he could not recall them until the music came on and he would be brought to tears with an influx of memories of his Mother and World War II in England and was able to tell me all about it.
