Association of British Dispensing Opticians

Alicia Thompson has relinquished the role of director of professional examinations at the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) to become its director of education, research and professional development. Taking up the head of exams vacancy is Miranda Richardson, Alicia’s deputy since 2013. Alicia will steer the future development of ABDO’s registerable qualifications as well as a suite of postgraduate qualifications and awards. She will also develop a new programme for academic advancement for existing and future members, and lead ABDO’s reformed Research and Clinical Committee.

ABDO general secretary, Tony Garrett, said: “Alicia is an outstanding optical educator with a well-deserved and growing international reputation. This appointment demonstrates ABDO’s total commitment to enhancing the profession and developing and promoting the role of dispensing opticians.” On Miranda’s appointment, Tony added: “I am delighted that Miranda has accepted this new position. She is an experienced and dedicated professional who brings considerable skill and knowledge to the role.”

Positive Impact

Contact lens opticians (CLOs) Ros Mussa, Caroline Presland and Adele Peacock have joined the professional affairs team at Positive Impact (PI). An experienced CLO and dry eye practitioner at the Eye Place, Ros will be helping practitioners to set up their own dry eye clinics. With more than 30 years’ experience, Caroline is working with PI across a number of areas, including myopia management, presbyopia, hybrid lenses and a range of dry eye solutions. With an advanced diploma in contact lens fitting, Adele currently works in the hospital eye service clinics at Great Western Hospital in Swindon.
