Britische Literatur Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse For my final lecture series before retirement, I have chosen a poetic novel about transience. Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse (1927) depicts two days, separated by a ten-year interval, in the lives of the Ramsay family and their associates. In this fictional portrayal of her parents, Woolf drew imaginatively on her memories of childhood and early adulthood, attempting to lay their legacy to rest. Through the contrast between Mr and Mrs Ramsay and between their values and those of later generations, Woolf also explores the evolution of gender roles and the social impact of what she interprets as masculine and feminine behaviours. Like Woolf’s other modernist fiction of the 1920s, To the Lighthouse responds to the First World War; it also works through personal bereavements that she had suffered. However, it culminates not in elegiac despondency but in affirmations of the resilience of the human spirit and of art’s capacity, in the face of mortality and of social turmoil, to transform fleeting experience into objects of lasting significance. Woolf substantiates these claims by her narrative crafting of the movements of consciousness and through the character of the post-impressionist artist Lily Briscoe (based on Woolf’s sister, Vanessa Bell), whose paintings express Woolf’s deepest aesthetic convictions. My lectures will locate To the Lighthouse in its cultural contexts. They will refer to the Oxford World’s Classics edition of the novel (ISBN: 978-0-19-953661-0).
