The sad passing of Her Majesty Elizabeth II on 8th September was certainly an historic occasion. When she assented to the throne in 1952 Winston Churchill was prime minister and rock’n’roll, as we know it, had yet to be invented. It truly was another age. She would go on to work with 15 prime ministers during her reign which, unsurprisingly, was the longest of any British monarch. Whether a monarchist or not, you would have to concede that she set an excellent example in terms of her dedication, stoicism and dignity. I happened to be in London for a few days around the time of her funeral and my hotel was located close to the queue which, all weekend, snaked its way from the Houses of Parliament all the way back to Southwark Park. People were in good spirits despite the 12hour wait and the mood was congenial while also respectful. In this month’s magazine we have published a souvenir supplement documenting some of the key events that occurred in Northern Ireland over the period of mourning. As well has featuring the local dignitaries who attended we have also tried to make space for some of the members of the public who simply wanted to pay their respects.
