TOP 10

Best cities for active lifestyles Walking, rollerblading, spin class, yoga or bicycle commutes: How do your residents stay physically fit? Achieving an active lifestyle is a matter of motivation and dedication, but it’s easier when a person’s community encourages physical fitness by its commitment to building parks, bike and walking paths, providing reasonably priced access to fitness centers and other fitness-forward initiatives. In January, WalletHub Financial writer Adam McCann took a look at medium-sized cities and metropolises across the United States to determine which ones best support weight loss and physical fitness goals. Based on 34 key indicators of an active lifestyle, he ranked 100 of them from best to worst. The data set presented by McCann includes WalletHub’s “active lifestyle” score, analysis of budget allocations and the number of sports and outdoor facilities and programs. Physical activity is a priority for the following cities that made the Top Ten:

1. San Francisco, Calif. 2. Chicago, Ill. 3. New York, N.Y. 4. San Diego, Calif. 5. Honolulu, Hawaii 6. Los Angeles, Calif. 7. Portland, Ore. 8. Philadelphia, Penn. 9. Denver, Colo. 10. Seattle, Wash. Source: https://wallethub.com/edu/best-and-worst-cities-for-an-active-lifestyle/8817 66   THE MUNICIPAL | MAY 2022
