âSoul of Bob Newcombâ Moves to Domingo Studio A Life-Sized Portrait of the Gulfport Icon Has a New Home The year after Bob Newcomb died, Gulfport, artist and close friend Ray Domingo painted a lifelike portrait of the âlarger than lifeâ figure in an effort to keep a piece of him alive. Until recently, the massive painting lived at The Historic Peninsula Inn. Now, the artist decided that the lookalike belongs in his working studio to encourage him as Newcomb eternally clutches a cocktail glass and displays his gleaming wedding band. âI think I can feel his soul in there,â Domingo said. âI think this is where heâs meant to be.â Domingo, whose typical work depicts National Geographic-worthy oceanic creatures, brought his friend to life using Newcombâs shoes and green button-down shirt for inspiration. But not before he asked Newcombâs wife, Beverly, for permission to recreate her husband.

âI think itâs the greatest gift Iâve ever received,â said Bob Newcombâs wife, Beverly.
âI didnât know what to expect; Ray paints fish,â Beverly said. âBut when I saw it I couldnât breathe. I was 15 when we first dated and life without him is only half a life ⌠but Iâm fortunate to be here in Gulfport. Itâs like my big family.â

Newcombâs portrait will live on in the Domingo Studio forever, says the artist. âHeâs got a look on him, ââ Domingo said, gesturing to Newcombâs perpetual smirk. âI think itâs an intriguing look.â
