was probably nine years old when I first read Black Beauty. I was a prairie girl with the first-hand experience of animal husbandry and deep sympathy for the livestock and pets on the farm (with some exceptions). A friend of mine the same age who grew up in urban Montreal also read it as a child. The effect on her was even more traumatic than on me.
