ask the expert BY EMILY PETER-COREY

Q: WHAT'S THE BEST TIME TO WALK MY DOG DURING THE SUMMER TO AVOID OVERHEATING? A: It’s best to go early in the morning or

later in the evening when the sun is down and the temperatures drop below 80 degrees. If we’re experiencing abnormally high temps (100+ degrees) then waiting until after 8 p.m. may be best. Be careful with walking on hot asphalt, as all dogs’ feet are susceptible to blistering since the temperature of asphalt and other heat-absorbing surfaces can reach 140-160 degrees! Make sure to have access to cool water for the dog to drink and consider bringing a thermal bottle with ice water and a towel (you can put the cold water on it to wipe down your dog if they're exposed to excessively high temps).

Q: IS IT BETTER TO RUN YOUR POOL PUMP DURING THE DAY OR AT NIGHT? A: It's always better to run your pump

during the day. Algae grows in the sun, and the circulation of water makes it harder for the algae to begin growing. Depending on the pump you have, you should set the timer for at least one to one-and-a-half turnovers per day. With proper filtration, circulation, and water balance, your pool will be crystal clear and perfect for swimming. —Mike Tilson The Pool Place Placerville 4480 Missouri Flat Road, Placerville, 530622-5386, thepoolplaceplacerville.com
