ing for a way to talk about it and see if they are open to any changes and support? Introducing assisted living may improve their quality of life and support their needs.

How do you start this heart-toheart? “It’s important to know what’s going on in his or her life,” says Amy Muller, Housing Advisor at Prairie Gate, a Presbyterian Homes & Services (PHS) senior living community, located in Council Bluffs, IA. “It’s even more important to listen. Ask questions, knowing that the conversation will occur over time. Above all, keep your parent in the ‘driver’s seat’ so that they make the decisions about their life,” she advises. Ask your parent what it takes to maintain their house and how well they can move about it comfortably and effectively. Find out how much space in the house they actually use and how well they can go in and out freely and safely. “Limited mobility beyond the walls can translate into isolation and loneliness,” Amy observes. It’s also vital to dispel outdated notions. Far from being a “nursing home,” assisted living at Prairie Gate offers studio, one or two bedroom apartments with open floor plans and fully equipped kitchens, complemented by supportive services including housekeeping, meals and personal care.

Your parent may fear losing their independence. “Assisted living residents make their own decisions and continue to lead their life the way they wish,” Amy assures. For older adults with memory loss, Memory Care offers a vibrant and secure neighborhood within the assisted living setting. Trained care staff and specialized programming create a community designed to help those with memory loss to function at their highest level. Scheduling a tour of Prairie Gate will give you a firsthand look at community life. “The most successful moves I have witnessed are made by seniors, with the support of their grown children,” said Amy. Change is hard for all of us, so be prepared to provide emotional support to your parent and be patient. The goal is to obtain the best possible quality of life in the best living environment for them today and for the future. ~
