HISTORIC TOURS

◆ Fort Crawford Museum The Museum is located on the Fort Crawford Military Tract. The Fort Crawford Hospital is the only remaining structure of the second Fort Crawford. At Fort Crawford, Black Hawk surrendered to the Indian Agent Joseph Street who presented him to Colonel Zachary Taylor to end the Blackhawk War. Colonel Taylor then sent Lt Jefferson Davis to escort Black Hawk to Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, Missouri. The Museum consists of three buildings: The Fort Crawford Hospital, the Museum of Prairie du Chien, and the Museum Store. Featured exhibits for 2020 include: The Artesian Wells, Sanitariums, and Cigar Factories of Prairie du Chien. Permanent exhibits in the Hospital include an 1832 Wardroom, the stories of Fort Crawford, Dr. William Beaumont, Treaties signed in Prairie du Chien, the Surrender of Black Hawk, artifacts located under Beaumont Road during utility work, a pharmacy, dentist of ce, and many more. The Museum of Prairie du Chien contains exhibits on prominent citizens, exhibits on the railroads, clamming, and other businesses, as well as an exhibit on the Battle for Prairie du Chien during the War of 1812. Other exhibits include St. Mary’s Academy and Campion (segregated schools for men and women), an iron lung, Prairie du Chien Fire Department, a hall of Family Trees dating back around 200 years, and many more. Fort Crawford Museum is open daily from May 1– October 31, 9 am - 4 pm. Tours are self-guided, but schools and groups are encouraged to come any time during the year by making a reservation. ◆ Mississippi River Sculpture Park This park features life-sized bronze statues of historical gures from the area. HORSE TRAILS

◆ La Riviere Park A 300 acre nature park located on Vineyard Coulee Road in SE Prairie du Chien. One of the region’s largest horse camps is located here. The six acre camp at 62048 Vineyard Coulee Road has water and electrical hookups on a rst come rst serve basis at 80 campsites. Horse camping is free. Donations are accepted. Six miles of horse trails are located in the park with access to additional trails off the park on private property. The camp and horse trails are managed by the La Riviere Riders.
