Authentically Me
While serving as a chapter leader during her collegiate years, ERIKA MONSON witnessed the true impact of Pi Phi volunteers. Now, as a member of North Dakota Alpha’s AAC, she gets to give back in the same way. Read more about her Pi Phi story and what she loves most about alumnae life.
WHAT DREW YOU TO PI PHI DURING RECRUITMENT?
During recruitment I kept a very open mind about which sororities I was most interested in. In the end, the decision was easy—I felt at home at North Dakota Alpha. The members were all unique and genuinely themselves, and this made me feel like I could be myself too. I was no longer trying to be impressive, but rather, I could have genuine conversations with members that were meaningful and impactful. The moment I realized I could be authentically me, I knew Pi Phi was home.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PI PHI MEMORY?
My favorite Pi Phi memory was being able to attend the 150 th Convention in St. Louis, Missouri. At the time, I was serving as Chapter President for North Dakota Alpha, and I found the opportunity to attend to be extremely rewarding. The week allowed me to truly appreciate the Fraternity, all it has to offer and how it has evolved over generations.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT ALUMNAE LIFE SO FAR?
The opportunity to connect with other Pi Phi alumnae. While in college, your Pi Phi circle is very isolated to your campus. Since becoming an alumna, it has been very rewarding to network with other Pi Phis and learn about their life experiences.
WHAT MADE YOU INITIALLY WANT TO VOLUNTEER FOR PI PHI?
As a collegian, I was able to witness how important volunteers are to Pi Phi. From serving on the chapter leadership team to attending College Weekend and convention, it was eye-opening to see how Pi Phi volunteers come together to help support local chapters and the Fraternity at large.
As an alumna, I feel that it is extremely important to serve as a volunteer, no matter the level. Volunteers truly are at the root of our organization and help keep things running smoothly and efficiently.
HOW HAVE YOUR LEADERSHIP ROLES SHAPED YOU?
Being a leader has helped me grow significantly. I have gained skills in communication, delegation, time management and so much more.
HOW HAS PI PHI MADE AN IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE?
Pi Phi has impacted my life in so many ways. It has brought me some of my closest friends and given me skills I use in my everyday life. Pi Phi has provided opportunities I never thought I would be able to experience. Simply put, without Pi Phi my life would not have been the same.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT OUR SISTERHOOD?
The ability to connect with all generations. No matter where life brings you, you will always have a Pi Phi connection within reach.
